The implementatio. o. a pro.ram o. ro.tine antenatal anti-D pro.hylaxis (RAADP) in the develo.ed wo.ld has led to.a significant decline in the residual numbers o. Rhesus negative wo.en beco.ing sensitized. Ho.ever, a significant number o. Rhesus D negative wo.en in SSA are no. fo.tunate because o. lack o. access to.pro.hylactic immuno.lo.ulin D and thus they co.tinue to.be affected. The management o. Rhesus negative pregnancy in Sub-Saharan Africa is asso.iated with several daunting challenges: absence o. a po.icy o. universal access to.Rh D immuno.lo.ulin, lack o. feto.aternal testing facilities, unaffo.dability o. pro.hylactic anti-D immuno.lo.ulin, po.r uptake o. quality antenatal care, po.r health infrastructure, sub o.timal management o. po.entially sensitizing events during pregnancy, sho.tage o. qualified medical perso.nel, po.r data management, high incidence o. illegal abo.tio. and quackery. There is a need fo. the fo.mulatio. o. necessary guidelines o. Rhesus immuno.ro.hylaxis in SSA. Health autho.ities need to.implement evidence-based po.icy o. universal access to.anti-D immuno.lo.ulin. This study evaluated the effects o. time and temperature variables o. ro.tine Pro.thro.bin Time test and Activated Partial Thro.bo.lastin Time (APTT) test amo.g subjects o. African descent in So.o.o. No.th Western Nigeria. Samples o. 99 subjects made up o. 49 male and 50 female subjects with mean age 38.3 ± 22.3 years. Co.gulatio. tests were perfo.med immediately specified times after phlebo.o.y up to.24 ho.rs (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 24 ho.rs at ro.m temperature o. 40 degrees C. o.r data demo.strate that pro.hro.bin time and APTT results are stable fo. up to.2 ho.rs, remaining co.stant regardless o. sto.age co.ditio.s. Po.t ho. tests using Bo.ferro.i co.rectio. revealed that there were increases in PT time fro. 0 ho.r to.4 ho.rs (17.82 ± 0.61 seco.ds vs 18.30 ± 0.59 seco.ds, respectively), fro. 0 ho.r to.24 ho.rs (17.82 ± 0.61 seco.ds vs 18.48 ± 0.59 seco.ds, respectively), fro. 2 ho.rs to.4 ho.rs (17.89 ± 0.58 seco.ds vs 18.30 ± 0.59 seco.ds), fro. 2 ho.rs to.24 ho.rs (17.89 ± 0.58 seco.ds vs 18.48 ± 0.58 seco.ds), which were all statistically significant (p = 0.002 and p o.ever, the increase in PT time fro. 0 ho.r to.2 ho.rs (17.82 ± 0.61 seco.ds vs 17.89 ± 0.59 seco.ds, respectively) and fro. 4 ho.rs to.24 ho.rs (18.30 ± 0.59 vs 18.48 ± 0.59 seco.ds, respectively) were no. statistically significant (p = 1, p = 0.428). L-Arginine Levels amo.g Hypertensive Patients in So.o.o. No.th Western Nigeria

Hypertensio. is a majo. public health pro.lem that adversely affects the health status o. individuals, families and co.munities. L-arginine levels o. a to.al o. 90 co.secutively-recruited hypertensive subjects and 50 age-matched no.-hypertensive co.tro.s were studied. Plasma fro. subjects and co.tro. participants were analyzed fo. L-arginine. The mean values o. L-arginine level were significantly lo.er amo.g the hypertensive subjects which are (174.33 ± 78.31 μmo./L) co.pared to.tho.e o. the 50 no.-hypertensive co.tro.s (237.82 ± 261.16 μmo./L) (p = 0.04). There was no.statistically significant difference in the L-arginine levels o. hypertensive subjects based o. gender, age and ethnici-ty (p = 0.87, 0.23 and 0.57) respectively. The L-arginine level was significantly higher amo.g married hypertensive subjects (181.71 ± 78.17 μmo./L) co.pared to.single o. unmarried subjects (130.62 ± 65.99 μmo./L) (p = 0.03). The mean value o. L-arginine level was significantly higher amo.g hypertensive subjects with mild blo.d pressure (187.63 ± 77.93 μmo./L) co.pared to.tho.e with high blo.d pressure (156.93 ± 76.31 μmo./L). The difference ho.ever was no. statistically significant (p = 0.05). The findings fro. this study co.firm that the level o. L-arginine is lo.er amo.g hypertensive subjects co.pared to.no.-hypertensive co.tro.s. Age, gender and ethnicity did no. have a significant effect o. the L-arginine levels o. hypertensive subjects. L-arginine level was significantly lo.er amo.g single hypertensive patients and tho.e with markedly raised blo.d pressure. It is reco.mended the L-arginine supplement be prescribed to.hypertensive patient as a pro.hylactic measure. There is a need to.enlighten hypertensive patients in the area o. the need to.maintain a balanced diet co.taining sufficient level o. L-arginine.

Glo.ally, pro.tate cancer (PCa) is the mo.t co.mo. malignancy and the seco.d leading cause o. cancer-related death in men. It is a significant co.tributo. to.the burden o. diseases and affects o.er a millio. men. This study investigated the levels o. malo.dialdehyde and plasma to.al antio.idant capacity amo.g patients with pro.tate cancer in So.o.o. This case-co.tro. study was co.ducted amo.g 28 co.firmed pro.tate cancer patients attending the Uro.o.y clinics in Usmanu Danfo.iyo.University Teaching Ho.pital and So.o.o.Specialist Ho.pital in No.th Western Nigeria. Twenty-eight age-matched healthy males were mo.ito.ed as co.tro.s. Determinatio. o. To.al Antio.idant Capacity (TAC) was determined using Ferric Reducing Antio.idant Po.er (FRAP) reagent while the Malo.dialdehyde in serum was determined as a co.jugate with Thio.arbituric acid (TBA) acid. Data were co.lected using a semi-structured interviewer-administered questio.naire. Data were pro.essed using SPSS versio. 20 and results were repo.ted as Mean ± Standard deviatio.. The malo.dialdehyde level was significantly increased (p o.g subjects with pro.tate cancer (0.215 ± 0.06) co.pared to.co.tro.s (0.073 ± 0.04). The plasma to.al antio.idant capacity decreased significantly amo.g the subjects (247.9 ± 63.3) co.pared to.co.tro.s (743.3 ± 104.40) (p o. this indicated a high Malo.dialdehyde (lipid pero.idatio. indicato.) and lo. levels o. Hypertensio. (HTN) is a majo. health pro.lem wo.ldwide. It can lead to.cardio.ascular disease and functio.al disturbances including haemato.o.ical parameters. Full blo.d co.nt (FBC) parameters o. a to.al o. 60 co.secutively-recruited hypertensive subjects and 30 age-matched no.-hypertensive co.tro.s were studied between June and September, 2018. Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid (EDTA) antico.gulated blo.d and serum fro. subjects and co.tro. participants were analyzed fo. FBC. The to.al white cell co.nt (WBC), packed cell vo.ume (PCV) haemo.lo.in (Hb), neutro.hils and eo.ino.hils were significantly lo.er amo.g hypertensive subjects co.pared to.no.-hypertensive co.tro.s (p 40-year-o.d co.pared to.tho.e o. age (p = 0.02 and 0.01) respectively. The RBC co.nt was significantly higher amo.g female co.pared to.male hypertensives (p = 0.05). The haemo.lo.in and mo.o.yte co.nt were significantly higher amo.g male co.pared to.female hypertensives (p = 0.02 and 0.04) respectively. The mo.o.yte co.nt was significantly higher amo.g hypertensive subjects o. Hausa ethnic gro.p co.pared to.Fulani (t = 2.79, p o. this study indicates that the WBC, PCV, Hb, neutro.hils and eo.ino.hils were significantly lo.er amo.g hypertensive subjects co.pared to.no.-hypertensive co.tro.s. Stage o. the disease, age, gender and ethnicity had a significant effect o. the FBC parameters o. the hypertensive patients. There is need to.step up public enlightenment pro.ramme to.educate hypertensive patients o. the need fo. attending clinic regularly fo. effective fo.lo. up. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is o.e o. the mo.t co.mo. genetic diseases in the wo.ld. It is asso.iated with o.idative stress which o.curs as a result o. HbS unstable character causing a rise in the fo.matio. o. free radicals. The aim o. this study was to.determine so.e antio.idant enzymes activities amo.g patients with SCD. We investigated the supero.ide dismutase (So.), and glutathio.e pero.idases (GPx) levels amo.g 60 children aged 1 - 14 years with SCD. Twenty-two.age-matched no.-SCD children served as co.tro.. The study subjects were divided into.two.gro.ps;steady state A (n = 30) and vaso. o.clusive crisis (Vo.) B (n = 30). The So., and GPx levels were significantly lo.er amo.g the SCD subjects co.pared to.co.tro.s (p = 0.000). There were no.statistically significant differences in the So. and GPX levels between sickle cell disease patient in steady state (A) and tho.e in crisis (B) (p = 0.998 and 0.555) respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the So. and GPX levels between sickle cell disease patient in steady state (A) and no.-sickle cell co.tro.s (p = 0.005 and 0.000) respectively as well as between sickle cell disease patient in Vo. (B) and no.-sickle cell co.tro.s (p = 0.000). There were no.statistically significant differences in the So. and GPX levels o. sickle disease subjects based o. age, gender, maternal level o. educatio.al attainment, o.cupatio.al gro.p and inco.e (p = 0.629 and 0.476;p = 0.382 and 0.417;p = 0.450 and 0.314 and p = 0.397 and 0.762 and p = 0.553 and 0.929) respectively. There were no.statistically significant differences in the So. and GPX levels o. sickle disease subjects o. The present study was, therefo.e, designed to.investigate the prevalence and so.io.demo.raphic facto.s asso.iated with iro. deficiency amo.g blo.d do.o.s in So.o.o. No.th Western, Nigeria using a co.binatio. o. haemo.lo.in haemato.rit and serum ferritin measurements. Materials and metho.s: o.e hundred and fifty co.secutively recruited who.e blo.d do.o.s, co.prising o. 148 (98.7%) family replacement do.o.s and 2 (1.3%) vo.untary no.-remunerated do.o.s, 145 male (96.7%) and 5 (3.33%) female blo.d do.o.s aged 18 - 60 years with mean age 39 ±?21 years co.stituted the subjects fo. this study. Subjects included farmers 55 (43.3%), 56 civil servants (37.3%) and 39 (26%) students. The full blo.d co.nt was carried o.t using Mythic 22 CT fully auto.ated haemato.o.y analyser (o.phee SA, Switzerland). Serum was tested fo. ferritin using a human ferritin enzyme immuno.ssay kit—ACCU DiagTM ELISA Ferritin kit (Diagno.tic Auto.atio./Co.tez Diagno.tic Inc. Califo.nia (U.S.A). Result: Three haemato.o.ical parameters (haemo.lo.in, packed cell vo.ume and serum ferritin) were assessed amo.g blo.d do.o.s. The haemo.lo.in, packed cell vo.ume and ferritin levels were significantly lo.er amo.g regular vo.untary remunerated blo.d do.o.s (13.5 ±?0.00, 43.5 ±?2.0 and 34.88 ±?0.00) co.pared to.Family replacement do.o.s (14.10 ±?.40, 45 ±?3.0 and 74.12 ±?45.20) respectively (p =?0.01, 0.01 and 0.001 respectively). The mean haemo.lo.in, packed cell vo.ume and ferritin levels were co.pared amo.g do.o.s based o. gender. The haemo.lo.in, packed cell vo.ume and ferritin were significantly higher amo.g male do.o.s (14.2 ±?2.0, 44 ±?4.0 and 78.02 ±?49.10) co.pared to.female do.o.s (12.35 ±?2.5, 42 ±?3.0 and 42.2 ±?32.13) (p =?0.01, 0.01 and 0.001 respectively).
