Evaluating physical changes of iron oxide nanoparticles due to surface modification with oleic acid

The physical characterization of a colloidal system of superficially modified magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) is presented. The system consists of oleic acid-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (oAMNP) suspended in water. A structural analysis is carried out by using standard physical techniques to determine the diameter and shape of the MNPs and also the width of the coating shell. The colloidal stability and the polydispersity index of this ferrofluid are determined by using Zeta potential measurements. Additionally, the magnetic characterization is conducted by obtaining the DC magnetization loops, and the blocking temperatures are determined according to the ZFC–FC protocol. Finally, the values of power absorption density P of the ferrofluid are estimated by using a magneto-calorimetric procedure in a wide range of magnetic field amplitude H and frequency f. The experimental results exhibit spherical-like shape of oAMNP with (20 ± 4) nm in diameter. Due to the use of coating process, the parameters of the magnetization loops and the blocking temperatures are significantly modified. Hence, while the uncoated MNPs show a blocking state of the magnetization, the oAMNP are superparamagnetic above room temperature (300 K). Furthermore, the reached dependence P versus f and P versus H of the ferrofluid with coated MNPs are clearly fitted to linear and quadratic correlations, respectively, showing their accordance with the linear response theory.

Normal cells are hijacked by cancer cells forming together heterogeneous tumor masses immersed in aberrant communication circuits that facilitate tumor growth and *** the well characterized angiogenic effect of some tumor-derived factors;others,such as BDNF,recruit peripheral nerves and *** neurogenic switch,activated by tumor-derived neurotrophins and extracellular vesicles,attracts adjacent peripheral fibers(autonomic/sensorial)and neural progenitor ***,tumor-associated nerve fibers can guide cancer cell ***,IL-1β,CCL2,PGE2,among other chemotactic factors,attract natural immunosuppressive cells,including T regulatory(Tregs),myeloid-derived suppressor cells(MDSCs),and M2 macrophages,to the tumor *** leukocytes further exacerbate the aberrant communication circuit releasing factors with neurogenic ***,cancer cells directly evade immune surveillance and the antitumoral actions of natural killer cells by activating immunosuppressive mechanisms elicited by heterophilic complexes,joining cancer and immune cells,formed by PD-L1/PD1 and CD80/CTLA-4 plasma membrane ***,nervous and immune cells,together with fibroblasts,endothelial,and bone-marrow-derived cells,promote tumor growth and enhance the metastatic properties of cancer *** by the demonstrated,but restricted,power of anti-angiogenic and immune cell-based therapies,preclinical studies are focusing on strategies aimed to inhibit tumor-induced *** we discuss the potential of anti-neurogenesis and,considering the interplay between nervous and immune systems,we also focus on anti-immunosuppression-based *** molecules,antibodies and immune cells are being considered as therapeutic agents,aimed to prevent cancer cell communication with neurons and leukocytes,targeting chemotactic and neurotransmitter signaling pathways linked to perineural invasion and metastasis.

Common and distinct regulation of human and mouse brown and beige adipose tissues： a promising therapeutic target for obesity

obesity, which underlies various metabolic and cardio- vascular diseases, is a growing public health challenge for which established therapies are inadequate. Given the current obesity epidemic, there is a pressing need for more novel therapeutic strategies that will help adult individuals to manage their weight. one promising therapeutic intervention for reducing obesity is to enhance energy expenditure. Investigations into human brown fat and the recently discovered beige/brite fat have galvanized intense research efforts during the past decade because of their pivotal roles in energy dissi- pation. In this review, we summarize the evolution of human brown adipose tissue （hBAT） research and dis- cuss new in vivo methodologies for evaluating energy expenditure in patients. We highlight the differences between human and mouse BAT by integrating and comparing their cellular morphology, function, and gene expression profiles. Although great advances in hBAT biology have been achieved in the past decade, more cellular models are needed to acquire a better under- standing of adipose-specific processes and molecular mechanisms. Thus, this review also describes the development of a human brown fat cell line, which could provide promising mechanistic insights into hBAT function, signal transduction, and development. Finally, we focus on the therapeutic potential and current limi- tations of hBAT as an anti-glycemic, anti-lipidemic, and weight loss-inducing ＇metabolic panacea＇.

The global epidemic of diabetes and tuberculosis poses challenges to the control of both *** with tuberculosis and diabetes experience worse clinical manifestations,increased risk of treatment failure,recurrence,and *** is also associated with risk for latent tuberculosis *** of hyperglycemia reduces the risk and improves the outcome of tuberculosis in diabetic *** epidemiological studies from Taiwan have provided new and important information on the benefits of metformin in *** addressing the issue of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis,a shortened anti-tuberculous therapeutic regime seems a feasible approach for better cure rates,with less loss-to-follow.

Searching for Non-coding RNAs in Genomic Sequences Using ncRNAscout

Recently non-coding RNA （ncRNA） genes have been found to serve many important functions in the cell such as regulation of gene expression at the transcriptional level. Potentially there are more ncRNA molecules yet to be found and their possible functions are to be revealed. The discovery of ncRNAs is a difficult task because they lack sequence indicators such as the start and stop codons dis- played by protein-coding RNAs. Current methods utilize either sequence motifs or structural parameters to detect novel ncRNAs within genomes. Here, we present an ab initio ncRNA finder, named ncRNAscout, by utilizing both sequence motifs and structural parameters. Specifically, our method has three components：（i） a measure of the frequency of a sequence, （ii） a measure of the structural stability of a sequence contained in a t-score, and （iii） a measure of the frequency of certain patterns within a sequence that may indicate the presence of ncRNA. Experimental results show that, given a genome and a set of known ncRNAs, our method is able to accurately identify and locate a significant number of ncRNA sequences in the genome. Experimental investigations of transient pressure variations in a high head model Francis turbine during start-up and shutdown

Penetration of the power generated using wind and solar energy to electrical grid network causing several incidents of the grid tripping, power outage, and frequency drooping. This has increased restart （star-stop） cycles of the hydroelectric turbines significantly since grid connected hydroelectric turbines are widely used to manage critical conditions of the grid. Each cycle induces significant stresses due to unsteady pressure loading on the runner blades. The presented work investigates the pressure loading to a high head （ He = 377 m, De = 1.78 m） Francis turbine during start-stop. The measurements were carried out on a scaled model turbine （HM = 12.5 m, DM = 0.349 m）. Total four operating points were considered. At each operating point, three schemes of guide vanes opening and three schemes of guide vanes closing were investigated. The results show that total head variation is up to 9% during start-stop of the turbine. on the runner blade, the maximum pressure amplitudes are about 14 kPa and 16 kPa from the instantaneous mean value of 121 kPa during rapid start-up and shutdown, respectively, which are about 1.5 times larger than that of the slow start-up and shutdown. Moreover, the maximum pressure fluctuations are given at the blade trailing edge.

Bar Presence in Local Galaxies:Dependence on Morphology in Field Galaxies

We analyzed the fractions of barred galaxies in the local Universe using a volume-limited sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release *** examined 116 field galaxies with redshifts between 0.0207 and 0.030,using r and z-band ***,the bar fraction was 26%in the r-band and 19%in the *** distinct morphological groups,barred spiral galaxies had fractions of 33%in the r-band and 22%in the z-band while barred lenticular galaxies had 25%in the r-band and 12%in the *** observed that the bar fraction in spiral galaxies increases for stellar masses log(M*/M_(⊙))>10.5 and for galaxies with red colors(u-r)>2.0Additionally,most barred galaxies have a bulge-to-total ratio B/T≤*** results indicate that the bar fraction i more dependent on internal morphology than on the galaxy environment.
