Evaluating organic acids as alternative leaching reagents for rare earth elements recovery from NdFeB magnets

This study proposes an advanced leaching method using organic acids to recover rare earth elements(REEs)from NdFeB permanent magnets from end-of-life computers hard disk drives(HDDs).The end-oflife HDDs were first dismantled in order to recover NdFeB magnets,which were then thermally demagnetized at 350℃during 30 min before crushing in a ball mill under inert *** electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM/EDS)analyses performed on the NdFeB magnets show the heterogeneous structure containing the major matric phase Nd_(2)Fe_(14)B and the REEsrich phase containing Nd and Pr ***,X-ray diffraction(XRD)and Mossbauer spectroscopy(MS)analyses on the ground NdFeB magnet show that grinding NdFeB magnets under inert atmosphere helps to minimize its *** analysis shows that the composition of the ground sample is Nd:22.8 wt%,Pr:3.3 wt%,Dy:1.2 wt%,Fe:62.6 wt%,Co:1.5 wt%,B:0.9 wt%,Ni:0.6 wt%.Diagrams of speciation and equilibrium phases(E_(h) ***)were calculated to determine the predominance of the formed species in the REEs-organic acids *** influence of the organic acid type(acetic acid,formic acid,citric acid and tartaric acid),the acid concentration(10 vol%,up to saturation),and the solid/liquid(S/L)ratio(0.5%-10%)on NdFeB magnets leaching was investigated employing an optimal experimental design conceived by the statistical software *** acid(CH_(3)COOH)shows the highest leaching performance of REEs,allowing leaching yields over 90%for Nd,Dy and Pr in the acid concentration range of 1.6-10 mol/L and the S/L ratio range of 0.5%-5%at a temperature of 60℃.The results presented in this investigation suggest that REEs can be recovered from magnets of end-of-life HDDs using an eco-friendly method assisted by organic acids.

Accurate prediction and detection of the DNA regions or their underlying structural patterns are constant difficulties for researchers. Feature extraction and functional classification of genomic sequences is an interesting area of research. Many computational techniques have already been applied including the artificial neural network (ANN), nonlinear model, spectrogram and statistical techniques. In this paper, some features are extracted from the wavelet coefficient and second set of features are extracted from the frequency of transition of nucleotides. These two features sets are examined. The purpose was to investigate the abilities of these parameters to predict critical segment in the DNA sequence. The neuro-fuzzy system was used for prediction. The performance of the neuro-fuzzy system was evaluated in terms of training performance and prediction accuracies. Two genomic sequences of the classes: prokaryotic and eukaryotic were used, as an example, ( Escherichia coli ) and ( Caenorhabditis elegans ) sequences were selected.

Groundwater is the main source of water in the studied area;therefore, it is significantly requested in all the activities of the inhabitants. These natural resources are affected by some drivers especially Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) and Climate Change. A Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) dynamics study is crucial for any global environmental change evaluation. For instance, for a given place, its change could affect considerably water cycle components. Therefore, the knowledge of the effects of LULC on groundwater recharge is then the key in water resources management system, in particular for the decision makers of the Koda Catchment where the scarcity of the water availability for agriculture is real. The spatiotemporal variation of the different units of LULC present in the catchment has been examined in this study. The Envi 4.5 Software coupled with ArcGIS using the Supervised Classification method, was applied to subset Landsat images from 1990 to 2016. Five (5) major LULC categories, cultivated land, bare land, herbaceous savannah, shrubby savannah and degraded savannah, were identified in the catchment. In a parallel direction, the groundwater recharge has been estimated through the conceptual Gardenia model for the same period 1990-2016. The results showed that the portion of cultivated land and bare land increased (14.9% and 23.5% respectively) while, the portion of savannah decreased: herbaceous savannah by 24.4%, degraded savannah by 10.32% and Shrubby Savannah by 3.6%. Savannah areas in Koda catchment is converted to agricultural land and urban area due to human activities. The decline of 8.4% in groundwater recharge might become so far obvious in the future if the current rate of deforestation continues in the Koda catchment. There is a need to closely monitor the changes in LULC for sustainable development. The results of this study could help to well understand the recharge pattern across Koda catchment under a changing LULC.

Lymphoma is a very common cancer in the pediatric population, and its modes of revelation are very variable. Case report: A 7-year-old patient was admitted for purulent pleurisy, whose cytological study of the pleural fluid isolated lymphoblastic cells in favor of a T-type lymphoblastic lymphoma, a very rare mode of revelation in current practice. Conclusion: Pediatric lymphoma takes on different aspects, and it is important to look for it systematically in order to ensure adequate management.

Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is a rare entity recently described whose typical clinical symptomatology is represented by dizziness triggered by a variation of pressure. We reported a case of SSCD which was diagnosed thanks to computed tomography (CT) scan of the petrous bone conducted systematically in front of mixed deafness with normal eardrum. The SSCD was bilateral and was revealed by mixed deafness on the left side and perception deafness on the right with a normal eardrum without the notion of vertigo. The cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) and an ultra-high resolution CT scan of the petrous bones in coronal and sagittal sections allowed the diagnosis. The SSCD should be considered in the presence of any conductive or mixed hearing loss with a normal eardrum. The CT scan in coronal and sagittal submillimetric sections allows the diagnosis.

Pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome PIMS is a new entity of systemic inflammatory disease in children that appeared in the epidemic context of COVID-19 infection in April 2020. The pathophysiological mechanisms of PIMS are poorly understood and the hypothesis of a maladaptive hyperactive immune response, notably involving cytokines, is described in the literature. In our study, we report our experience regarding the clinical presentation, diagnosis, management and outcome of patients who presented with pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome post COVID-19.

Study of A1298C MTHFR Gene Polymorphism as a Risk Factor for Neural Tube Defects in the Eastern Algerian Population

Background: As C677T mutation, A1298C mutation in methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene results in a decreased MTHFR activity but to a less extent, it is known as a risk factor of predisposition to human neural tube defects (NTDs), in some populations. Our objective was therefore to study, for the first time in Algerian population, if A1298C polymorphism confers risk for the occurrence of this abnormality. We have examined the distribution of the genotype and the allele frequencies of A1298C mutation, and also their influence on plasma homocysteine (Hcy) concentration. Patients and Methods: We studied this polymorphism in 38 mothers of NTD cases and 67 control individuals of an eastern Algerian population. The mutation was determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (PCR/RFLP). Plasma homocysteine concentration was analyzed using an automated chemiluminescence method. Results: No signi?cant association could be observed between allele and genotypes frequencies of A1298C MTHFR gene polymorphism and NTDs risk. However, we could observe that A1298C polymorphism affects homocysteine metabolism in mothers of NTD cases leading to homocysteine concentration values higher in AA genotype and lower in AC/CC genotypes (15.29 ± 11.8 μmol/l vs. 8.63 ±

Cystic Lymphangioma on the Floor of the Oral Cavity Extending to the Submandibular Region in Adult Patients

Lymphatic malformation (ML), formerly called cystic lymphangioma is a benign hamartomatous tumor of lymphatic vessels. The onset of lymphangiomas is either at birth (60% to 70%) or up to two years of age (90%) and rare in adults. These malformations can occur in any region of the body, Lymphangiomas have marked predilection for the head and neck region (50% - 70%). The most common location in the mouth is the dorsum of tongue. If the positive diagnosis is generally easy, the therapeutic management remains controversial. We report the clinical case of a 23-year-old adult patient with cystic lymphangioma on the floor of the oral cavity extending gradually to the right submandibular region. The clinically suspected tumor was thoroughly explored using tomodensitometry. The treatment consisted of complete resection by a cervicotomy with histological examination confirming the macroscopic diagnosis of cystic lymphangioma. Follow-up at 3 years showed no recurrence.

Background and Purpose: Paragangliomas are rare tumors of the head and neck. Their management remains problematic and varies considerably depending on the center. This study reported 14 years of experience in the management of head and neck paraganglioma (HNPGls). We aimed to assess the therapeutic results of these tumors in terms of local control and overall survival. Materials and Methods: We included 16 patients followed for HNPGls and treated by radiotherapy from January 2006 to June 2018 in the National Institute of Oncology in Rabat.
