Occurrence and distribution of vibrios in fishes and shellfishes in coastal waters of Hong Kong

The summer occurrence and distribution of vibrios in the fishes and shellfishes in the coasal waters of Hong Kong were investigaed. A total of 69 strains of vibrios were isolated from all samples examined. The strains, along with 10 reference strains were classified with the technique of numerical taxonomy bared on 54 characters and 62 of the 69 strains fell into 5 major phena, identified as V. paraheamolyticus (30 strains), V. alginoloticus (23 strains), V. choloerae (3 strains), V. harveyi (2 strains) and V. fluinalis (4 strains). Among them, *** and V. alginolyticus were the predominant species in the fishes, shellfishes and the coastal waters of Hong Kong and comprised 43. 5 % and 33. 3 % of the total Vibrio spp. isolates respectively. Meanwhile, 3 strains of non-Ol V. cholerae were isolated from oyster and it was the first time to record V. cholerae non-Ol in seawater or from shellfishes in Hong Kong. These results highlighted the potential risks of food poisoning associated with raw or undercooked seafood.

Leptotrichia hongkongensis ***.,a novel Leptotrichia species with the oral cavity as its natural reservoir

A straight, non-sporulating, Gram-variable bacillus (HKU24T) was recovered from the blood culture of a patient with metastatic breast carcinoma. After repeated subculturing in BACTEC Plus Anaerobic/F blood culture broth, HKU24T grew on brucella agar as non-hemolytic, pinpoint colonies after 96 h of incubation at 37 °C in an anaerobic environment and aerobic environment with 5% CO2. Growth was enhanced with a streak of staphylococcus aureus. HKU24T was non-motile and catalase-negative, but positive for alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase, and α-glucosidase. It hydrolyzed phenylphosphonate and reduced resazurin. 16s rRNA, groEL, gyrB, recA, and rpoB sequencing showed that HKU24T occupies a distinct phylogenetic position among the Leptotrichia species, being most closely related to Leptotrichia trevisanii. Using HKU24T groEL, gyrB, recA, and rpoB gene-specific primers, fragments of these genes were amplified from one of 20 oral specimens. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, we propose a new species, Leptotrichia hongkongensis sp. nov., to describe this bacterium.

A six-year descriptive epidemiological study of human coronavirus infections in hospitalized patients in Hong Kong

We conducted a six-year epidemiological study on human coronaviruses（HCoVs） circulating in Hong Kong, using 8275 nasopharyngeal samples from patients with acute respiratory tract infections. HCoVs were detected in 77（0.93%） of the samples by a pan-HCoV RT-PCR assay. The most frequently detected HCoV species was HCoV-OC43（0.58%）, followed by HCoV-229E（0.15%）,HCoV-HKU1（0.13%） and HCoV-NL63（0.07%）. HCoVs were detected throughout the study period（september 2008–August 2014）, with the highest detection rate from september 2010 to August2011（22/1500, 1.47%）. Different seasonal patterns of each HCoV species in Hong Kong were ***-OC43 was predominant in the fall and winter, whereas HCoV-HKU1 showed peak activity in winter, with a few cases occurred in spring and summer. HCoV-229 E mainly occurred in winter and spring, while HCoV-NL63 was predominant in summer and autumn. HCoVs most commonly infect the elderly and young children, with median age of 79.5 years（range, 22 days to 95 years）.Intriguingly, the detection rate of HCoV-OC43 in the age group of ＆gt; 80 years（26/2380, 1.09%） was significantly higher than that in the age group of 0–10 years（12/2529, 0.47%）（P 〈 0.05）. These data provides new insight into the epidemiology of coronaviruses.

The mission of Korea superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KsTAR)project is to develop an advanced steady-state superconducting tokamak for establishing a scientificand technological basis for an attractive fusion reactor. Because one of the KsTAR mission is toachieve a steady-state operation, the use of superconducting coils is an obvious choice for themagnet system. The KsTAR superconducting magnet system consists of 16 Toroidal Field (TF) coils and14 Poloidal Field (PF) coils. Internally-cooled Cable-In-Conduit Conductors (CICC) are put into usein both the TF and PF coil systems. The TF coil system provides a field of 3.5 T at the plasmacenter and the PF coil system is able to provide a flux swing of 17 V-sec. The major achievement inKsTAR magnet-system development includes the development of CICC, the development of a full-size TFmodel coil, the development of a coil system for background magnetic-field generation , theconstruction of a large-scale superconducting magnet and CICC test facility. TF and PF coils are inthe stage of fabrication to pave the way for the scheduled completion of KsTAR by the end of 2006.

Identification and characterization of Trichoderma species aggressive to Pleurotus in Italy

In the late 1980’s the deve lop ment of a severe epidemic of green mold caused by Trichoderma spp. was not ed in the commercial production of Agaricus bisporus (champignon) in the U nited Kingdom, North America, spain and Holland, which caused extensive economic losses. The parasitic fungi isolated from the edible mushroom belonged to four biotypes, Th1, Th2, Th3 and Th4 of T. harzianum. However, among these biotypes, only Th2 (since c lassified as T. aggressivum f. europaeum) and Th4 (T. aggressivum f. aggressivum) were identified as the fungi causing problems in Agaricus production. In general, mushroom compost hosts both aggressive and innocuous is olates of Trichoderma, which are not morphologically distinguishable. Abo ut four years ago, a problem with green mold became apparent in the production o f Pleurotus ostreatus in Northern Italy, which eventually developed to a c risis situation in the south two years later and threatened to seriously comprom ise the Pleurotus market. This study was initiated to: isolate and identif y the aggressive fungi, then morphologically, physiologically and genetically characterize the isolates, dete rmine the source and phases of infection, and study methods of control. samples were obtained from different phases of compost preparation at the locality of a major producer and supplier of compost to the mushroom industry in southern Ital y, and microbial counts were conducted. Although the presence of Trichoderma was detected in the initial stages of composting, this value was reduced to zero from the phase of pasteurization to seeding with Pleurotus. Trichoderma infestations were noted in the packaged Pleurotus bales at various time s during the incubation phase (7-15 days after seeding) and after shipping to th e mushroom greenhouses, where the pathogen infestations greatly reduced the qual ity and quantity of the mushroom yield, as well as the number of potential harvest cycles. Detecting deterministic dynamics of cardiac rhythm

Under the acceptable hypothesis that cardiac rhythm is an approximately deterministic process with a small scale noise component, an available way is provided to construct a model that can reflect its prominent dynamics of the deterministic component. When applied to the analysis of 19 heart rate data sets, three main findings are stated. The obtained model can reflect prominent dynamics of the deterministic component of cardiac rhythm; cardiac chaos is stated in a reliable way; dynamical noise plays an important role in the generation of complex cardiac rhythm.
