Analysis of flow around impermeable groynes on one side of symmetrical compound channel:An experimental study

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the influences of floodplain impermeable groynes on flow structure, velocity, and water depth around the groyne（s）. A wooden symmetrical compound channel was used. Groyne models with three different groyne relative lengths, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0, were used on one floodplain with single and series arrangements. Analysis of the experimental results using the measured flow velocity and water depth values showed that flow structure, velocity, and water depth mainly depend on groyne relative length and the relative distance between series groynes. The flow velocity at the main channel centerline increased by about 40%, 60%, and 85%, and in other parts on the horizontal plane at the floodplain mid-water, depth by about 75%, 125%, and 175% of its original value in eases of one-side floodplain groyne（s） with relative lengths of 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0, respectively. The effective distance between two groynes in series arrangement ranges from 3 to 4 times the groyne length. Using an impermeable groyne with a large relative length in river floodplains increases the generation of eddy and roller zones downstream of the groyne, leading to more scouring and deposition. A novel iodonium-ylide compound 2 that appends a trifluoromethylthio （SCF3） group is disclosed as a new, shelf-stable electrophilic trifluoromethylation reagent. Unlike known shelf-stable electrophilic trifluoromethylation reagents, 2 has a stable SCF3 group which is activated by appending iodonium ylide under copper catalysis via sul- fonium ylide to generate a cationic trifluoromethyl （CF3） species. Reagent 2 was found to be an efficient electro- philic trifluoromethylation reagent for a wide range of silyl enol ethers 3 under copper catalysis. Cyclic and acyclic a-trifiuoromethyl ketones 4 were obtained by reagent 2 in moderate to good yields. On the other hand, a difluoro- methylthio analogue 5 did not affect intermolecular transfer difluoromethylation to substrates. Instead, intramolecu- lar 1,4-migration proceeded similar to the Stevens rearrangement to provide 6 in 21% yield, independent of the presence of nucleophiles 3.

The nano-structured NiO powder obtained by sol-gel method was doped with 10 wt% gold in order to modify its morphology as well as its electrochemical catalytic *** NO_x sensing characteristics of mixed-potential-type YSZ-based planar sensors attached with each of the nano-NiO and the Au-doped nano-NiO materials as a sensing electrode SE) were examined at temperatures of 700℃～800℃.The Au-doped NiO-SE was found to give a large enhancement in the NO_2 sensitivity as well as the NO_2 selectivity at 800℃under wet condition,in comparison with the pure *** reason for the improvement in the NO_2 sensitivity was examined based on the data of polarization curves,impedance spectra and catalytic activity for the gas-phase NO_2 decomposition.

AIM： TO investigate the expression of genes involved in the gemcitabine-induced cytotoxicity in human pancreatic cancer cells. METHODS： A human pancreatic cancer cell line, PANC-1, was cultured. 1 × 10^4 PANG-1 cells were plated in 96-well microtiter plates. After being incubated for 24 h, gemcitabine was added to the medium at concentrations ranging 2.5 -1 000 mg/L. The AlamarBlue dye method was used for cell growth analysis. DNA fragmentation was quantitatively assayed using a DNA fragmentation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA） kit. PAP and TP53INP1 mRNA expression was determined using the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction with semi-quantitative analysis. The expression of GSK-3β and phospho-GSK-3β proteins was examined with Western blot analysis. RESULTS： The IC50 for the drug after a 48-h exposure to gemcitabine was 16 mg/L. The growth of PANC-1 cells was inhibited by gemcitabine in a concentration-dependent manner （P〈 0.0001） and the cell growth was also inhibited throughout the time course （P〈0.0001）. The DNA fragmentation rate in the gemcitabine-treated group at 48 h was 44.7 %, whereas it was 25.3 % in the untreated group. The PAP mRNA expression was decreased after being treal^l with gemcitabine, whereas the TP53INP1 mRNA was increased by the gemcitabine treatment. Western blot analysis showed that phospho- GSK-3βZ^ser9 was induced by the gemcitabine treatment. CONCLUSION： Gemcitabine suppresses PANC-1 cell proliferation and induces apoptosis. Apoptosis is considered to be associated with the inhibition of PAPand GSK-3β, and the activation of TP53INP1 and pospho- GSK-3β^ser9 .

Restoration of Koggala lagoon: Modelling approach in evaluating lagoon water budget and flow characteristics

Groyne system modification is described related to restoration efforts to Koggaia lagoon, Sri *** large-scale unplanned sand removal at the lagoon mouth shifted the formation of sand bar towards the lagoon and made adverse effects on its ecosystem. After the removal of the natural sand bar, groyne system was constructed to avoid sand deposition in the lagoon and to protect the highway bridge （across the lagoon outlet channel） from the wave attack. The existing groyne system resulted the lagoon mouth being permanently open to sea which in turn led to many environmental problems. Groyne system modification is proposed in this study to reduce the sea water *** budget and two-dimensional depth averaged hydrodynamic model were developed for understanding the hydrologic and flow characteristics of the lagoon. Numerical experiments was performed at lagoon mouth area for two cases：（1） existing condition and （2） proposed rubble mound groyne system condition. Comparison of results was obtained for both cases to describe flow pattern at lagoon mouth. Results further showed, the width should be reduced to a maximum of 40 m. Proposed mouth width （40 m） pushed the salting factor towards 0.5 from 0.68. Salting factor reduction with the groyne modification may result a predominant influence of fresh water which may in turn lead lagoon to a fresh water ecosystem.

Physical factors affecting the survival of Tachypleus tridentatus eggs were investigated by translocating their eggs between the high intertidal zone and the low intertidal zone of a known spawning *** mean egg survival rates per day were highest in the mid intertidal zone(45.1%±25.4%)and the lowest in the low intertidal zone(13.3%±27.6%).Differences in the elevation,air exposure time,and water content of the spawning ground were significant factors determining the egg survival *** or insufficient air exposure time resulted in inadequate water content at higher and lower intertidal zones and could reduce egg *** the other hand,moderate saturation and dehydration were repeated with each tidal movement in the mid intertidal *** dynamic is considered as one of the crucial factors for the survival of eggs and is considered optimal for ***,the protection of the mid intertidal zone is imperative for maximizing the egg survival rate in Tsuyazaki Cove where almost all suitable nesting sites have disappeared due to coastal *** protecting these optimal sites for spawning and recovering other optimal sites on suitable beaches,a positive contribution can be made to future management and *** study also suggests that translocating eggs from marginal to optimal spawning sites might be a recovery strategy for this globally endangered species.
