Anaerobic biodegradation of.PAHs in mangrove sediment with amendment of.NaHCO_3

Mangrove sediment is unique in chemical and biological properties. Many of.them suf.er polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon（PAH） contamination. However, the study on PAH biological remediation f.r mangrove sediment is def.cient. Enriched PAH-degrading microbial consortium and electron acceptor amendment are considered as two ef.ective measures. Compared to other electron acceptors, the study on CO2, which is used by methanogens, is still seldom. This study investigated the ef.ect of.Na HCO3 amendment on the anaerobic biodegradation of.f.ur mixed PAHs, namely f.uorene（f.）, phenanthrene（Phe）,f.uoranthene（f.ua） and pyrene（Pyr）, with or without enriched PAH-degrading microbial consortium in mangrove sediment slurry. The trends of.various parameters, including PAH concentrations, microbial population size, electron-transport system activities, electron acceptor and anaerobic gas production were monitored. The results revealed that the inoculation of.enriched PAH-degrading consortium had a signif.cant ef.ect with half.lives shortened by 7–13 days f.r 3-ring PAHs and 11–24 days f.r 4-ring PAHs. While Na HCO3 amendment did not have a signif.cant ef.ect on the biodegradation of.PAHs and other parameters, except that CO2 gas in the headspace of.experimental f.asks was *** of.the possible reasons is that mangrove sediment contains high concentrations of.other electron acceptors which are easier to be utilized by anaerobic bacteria, the other one is that the anaerobes in mangrove sediment can produce enough CO2 gas even without adding Na HCO3.

ten-a overexpression causes abnormal pattern in the Drosophila compound eye

Ten-a is one of.the two Drosophila proteins that belong to the Ten M protein f.mily. This protein is a type Ⅱ transmembrane protein and is expressed mainly in the embryonic CNS, in the larval eye imaginal disc and in the compound eye of.the pupa. Here, we investigate the role of.ten-α during development of.the compound eye by using the Gal4/ UAS system to induce ten-α overexpression in the developing eye. We f.und that overexpression of.ten-α can perturb eye development during all stages examined. In an early stage, overexpression of.ten-α in eye primordial cells caused small and rough eyes and interf.red with photoreceptor cell recruitment, resulting in some ommatidia having f.wer or extra photoreceptor cells. Conversely, ten-α overexpression daring ommatidial f.rmation caused severe eye def.cts due to absence of.many cellular components. Interestingly, overexpression of.ten-α in the late stage developing ommatidial cluster af.ected the number of.pigment cells, caused cone cells prolif.ration in many ommatidia, and caused some photoreceptor cell def.cts. These results suggest that ten-α may be a novel gene required f.r normal eye morphogenesis.

Development of.a new connection f.r precast concrete walls subjected to cyclic loading

The Industrialized Building System （IBS） was recently introduced to minimize the time and cost of.project construction. Accordingly, ensuring the integration of.the connection of.precast components in IBS structures is an important f.ctor that ensures stability of.buildings subjected to dynamic loads f.om earthquakes, vehicles, and machineries. However, structural engineers still lack knowledge on the proper connection and detailed joints o f.BS structure construction. Theref.re, this study proposes a special precast concrete wall-to-wall connection system f.r dynamic loads that resists multidirectional imposed loads and reduces vibration ef.ects （PI2014701723）. This system is designed to connect two adjacent precast wall panels by using two steel U-shaped channels （i.e., male and f.male joints）. During casting, each joint is adapted f.r incorporation into a respective wall panel af.er considering the f.llowing conditions： one side of.the steel channel opens into the thickness f.ce of.the panel; a U-shaped rubber is implemented between the two channels to dissipate the vibration ef.ect; and bolts and nuts are used to create an extension between the two U-shaped male and f.male steel channels. The developed f.nite element model of.the precast wall is subjected to cyclic loads to evaluate the perf.rmance of.the proposed connection during an imposed dynamic load. Connection perf.rmance is then compared with conventional connections based on the energy dissipation, stress, def.rmation, and concrete damage in the plastic range. The proposed precast connection is capable of.exceeding the energy absorption of.precast walls subjected to dynamic load, thereby improving its resistance behavior in all principal directions.

Alzheimer’s disease(AD)is a very complex disease that causes brain f.ilure,then eventually,dementia *** is a global health problem.99%of.clinical trials have f.iled to limit the progression of.this *** risks and barriers to detecting AD are huge as pathological events begin decades bef.re appearing clinical *** f.r AD are likely to be more helpf.l if.the diagnosis is determined early bef.re the f.nal stage of.neurological *** this regard,the need becomes more urgent f.r biomarker-based detection.A key issue in understanding AD is the need to solve complex and high-dimensional datasets and heterogeneous biomarkers,such as genetics,magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),cerebrospinal f.uid(CSf.,and cognitive *** an interpretable reasoning system and perf.rming interoperability that achieves in terms of.a semantic model is potentially very ***,our aim in this work is to propose an interpretable approach to detect AD based on Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis ontology(ADDO)and the expression of.semantic web rule language(SWRL).This work implements an ontology-based application that exploits three dif.erent machine learning *** models are random f.rest(Rf.,JRip,and J48,which have been used along with the voting *** dataset was used f.r this *** proposed classif.er’s result with the voting ensemble achieves a higher accuracy of.94.1%and precision of.94.3%.Our approach provides ef.ective inf.rence ***,it contributes to a real,accurate,and interpretable classif.er model based on various AD biomarkers f.r inf.rring whether the subject is a normal cognitive(NC),signif.cant memory concern(SMC),early mild cognitive impairment(EMCI),late mild cognitive impairment(LMCI),or AD.

Remediation ef.ect of.compost on soluble mercury transf.r in a crop of.Phaseolus vulgaris

We studied the dynamics of.mercury（Hg） transf.r in Phaseolus vulgaris plants grown in soil with Hg-doped compost at the maximum levels permitted by Colombian law on organic amendments. Quantitative evaluation of.transf.r was made in dif.erent plant organs： roots,stem, leaves, pods and seeds. Matrix ef.ect was determined in doped soil assays, using soil with and without addition of.compost. Results showed that the use of.organic matter reduced Hg transf.r to the plant and the amount transf.rred was dif.erentially distributed to the organs. We observed an inverse relationship between concentration and distance f.om the body to the root. It was evident that transf.r was mediated by quantitative f.ctors;the greater the presence of.mercury in soil, the larger the amount that will be *** also indicate the remedial ef.ect of.compost and the presence of.a barrier, at the root level, against mercury translocation to the plant aerial parts.

Stem cell-derived exosomes-an emerging tool f.r myocardial regeneration

Cardiovascular diseases(CVDs) continue to represent the number one cause of.death and disability in industrialized countries. The most severe f.rm of.CVD is acute myocardial inf.rction(AMI), a devastating disease associated with high mortality and disability. In a substantial proportion of.patients who survive AMI, loss of.f.nctional cardiomyocytes as a result of.ischaemic injury leads to ventricular f.ilure, resulting in signif.cant alteration to quality of.lif. and increased mortality. Theref.re, many attempts have been made in recent years to identif. new tools f.r the regeneration of.f.nctional cardiomyocytes. Regenerative therapy currently represents the ultimate goal f.r restoring the f.nction of.damaged myocardium by stimulating the regeneration of.the inf.rcted tissue or by providing cellsthat can generate new myocardial tissue to replace the damaged tissue. Stem cells(SCs) have been proposed as a viable therapy option in these cases. However, despite the great enthusiasm at the beginning of.the SC era, justif.ed by promising initial results, this therapy has f.iled to demonstrate a signif.cant benef.t in large clinical trials. One interesting f.nding of.SC studies is that exosomes released by mesenchymal SCs(MSCs) are able to enhance the viability of.cardiomyocytes af.er ischaemia/reperf.sion injury, suggesting that the benef.cial ef.ects of.MSCs in the recovery of.f.nctional myocardium could be related to their capacity to secrete exosomes. Ten years ago, it was discovered that exosomes have the unique property of.transf.rring miRNA between cells, acting as miRNA nanocarriers. Theref.re, exosomebased therapy has recently been proposed as an emerging tool f.r cardiac regeneration as an alternative to SC therapy in the post-inf.rction period. This review aims to discuss the emerging role of.exosomes in developing innovative therapies f.r cardiac regeneration as well as their potential role as candidate biomarkers or f.r developing new diagnostic tools.

The kinetics of.camphene production in liquid phase f.om α-pinene was experimentally determined in an isothermal batch reactor. To this end, a sulf.ted ZrO2 catalyst was used and the reaction studied in the temperature range of.370-403 K. By analyzing the experimental data, second reaction order f.r α-pinene was f.und. A kinetic model is presented which includes term f.r the catalyst load used. The specif.c rate constant at 393K was 2.19×10^-3 mol·L^-1·min^-1, the activation energy being 93kJ·mo1·^-1. Both values are within the range of.literature results.

In the uncertainties within which the worldwide f.od security lies nowadays,the agricultural industry is raising a crucial need f.r being equipped with the state-of.the-art technologies f.r a more ef.icient,climate-resilient and sustainable *** traditional production methods have to be revisited,and opportunities should be given f.r the innovative solutions hencef.rth brought by big data analytics,cloud computing and internet of.things(IoT).In this context,we develop an optimized tinyML-oriented model f.r an active machine learningbased greenhouse microclimate management to be integrated in an on-f.eld *** design an experimental strawberry greenhouse f.om which we collect multivariate climate data through installed *** obtained values'combinations are labeled according to a f.ve-action multi-label control strategy,then used to prepare a machine learning-ready *** dataset is used to train and f.ve-f.ld cross-validate 90 Multi-Layer Perceptrons(MLPs)with varied hyperparameters to select the most perf.rmant–yet optimized–model instance f.r the addressed *** multi-label control approach enables designing highly scalable models with reduced computational complexity,comprising only n control neurons instead of.1+∑n k=1Cn k)neurons(usually generated f.om a classic single-label approach f.om n input variables).Our f.nal selected model incorporates 2 hidden layers with 7 and 8 neurons respectively and 151 parameters;it scored a mean accuracy of.97%during the cross-validation phase,then 96%on our supplementary test *** model enables an intelligent and autonomous greenhouse management with the less required *** can be ef.iciently deployed in microcontrollers within real world operating conditions.

Psychological burden of.f.od allergy

One f.f.h of.the population report adverse reactions to f.od. Reasons f.r these symptoms are heterogeneous, varying f.om f.od allergy, f.od intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome to somatof.rm or other mental disorders. Literature reveals a large discrepancy between truly diagnosed f.od allergy and reports of.f.od allergy symptoms by care seekers. In most studies currently available the characterization of.patient groups is incomplete, because they did not distinguish between immunologic reactions and other kinds of.f.od reactions. In analysing these adverse reactions, a thorough physical and psychological diagnostic approach is important. In our qualitative review, we present those diagnostic measures that are evidenced-based as well as clinically usef.l, and discuss the various psychological dimensions of.adverse reactions to f.od. It is important to acknowledge the complex interplay between body and mind： Adults and children suf.ering f.om f.od allergy show impaired quality of.lif. and a higher level of.stress and anxiety. Pavlovian conditioning of.adverse reactions plays an important role in maintaining symptoms. The role of.personality, mood, or anxiety in f.od reactions is debatable. Somatof.rm disorders ought to be identif.ed early to avoid lengthy and f.ustrating investigations. A f.ture task will be to improve diagnostic algorithms, to describe psychological aspects in clearly characterised patient subgroups, and to develop strategies f.r an optimized management of.the various types of.adverse reactions to f.od.
