Absence of postzygotic isolating mechanisms:evidence from experimental hybridization between two species of tropical sea urchins

Two reef margin species of tropical sea urchins,Echinometra sp.C(Ec) and Echinometra oblonga(Eo),occur sympatrically on Okinawa intertidal reefs in southern *** between these species was examined through a series of cross-fertilization *** limited sperm concentrations,where conspecific crosses reached near 100% fertilization,both heterospecific crosses showed high fertilization rates(81%-85%).The compatibility of the gametes demonstrated that if gamete recognition molecules are involved in fertilization of these species,they are not strongly *** found that conspecific crosses reached peak fertilization levels much faster than did heterospecific crosses,indicating the presence of a prezygotic barrier to hybridization in the *** survival,metamorphosis,and juvenile and adult survival of hybrid groups were nearly identical to those of their parent *** from crosses in both directions developed normally through larval stages to sexually mature adults,indicating that neither gametic incompatibility nor hybrid inviability appeared to maintain reproductive isolation between these *** adults,Ec×Ec crosses gave the highest live weight,followed by Eo(ova)×Ec(sperm),Ec(ova)×Eo(sperm),and Eo×*** growth performance measures(viz.,test size,Aristotle's lantern length,and gonad index) of hybrid groups and their parental siblings showed the same *** phenotypic color patterns of the hybrids were closer to the maternal coloration,whereas spine length,tube-foot and gonad spicule characteristics,pedicellaria valve length,and gamete sizes showed intermediate *** F 1 hybrids were completely fertile and displayed high fertilization success in F 1 backcrosses,eliminating the likelihood that hybrid sterility is a postzygotic mechanism of reproductive ***,intensive surveys failed to find hybrid individuals in the field,suggesting the lack or rarity of natural *** stron

An Eigenspace Method for Detecting Space-Time Disease Clusters with Unknown Population-Data

Space-time disease cluster detection assists in conducting disease surveillance and implementing control *** state-of-the-art method for this kind of problem is the Space-time Scan Statistics(SaTScan)which has limitations for non-traditional/non-clinical data sources due to its parametric model assumptions such as Poisson orGaussian *** this problem,an Eigenspace-based method called Multi-EigenSpot has recently been proposed as a nonparametric ***,it is based on the population counts data which are not always available in the least developed *** addition,the population counts are difficult to approximate for some surveillance data such as emergency department visits and over-the-counter drug sales,where the catchment area for each hospital/pharmacy is *** extend the population-based Multi-EigenSpot method to approximate the potential disease clusters from the observed/reported disease counts only with no need for the population *** proposed adaptation uses an estimator of expected disease count that does not depend on the population *** proposed method was evaluated on the real-world dataset and the results were compared with the population-based methods:Multi-EigenSpot and *** result shows that the proposed adaptation is effective in approximating the important outputs of the population-based methods.

Precise identification of different stages of a tick,Ixodes granulatus Supino,1897(Acari:Ixodidae)

Objective: To identify different stages of Ixodes granulatus(I. granulatus) based on morphological characters prior to molecular identification which is significant for confirming and identifying the nymphal stages of I. ***: A total of 14 individuals of adult, engorged and nymphal ticks collected from three different localities were examined morphologically using taxonomic keys, followed by PCR using cytochrome oxidase subunit I(COI). Clustering analysis based on COI sequences was carried out by constructing neighbor-joining and maximum parsimony tree to clarify the genetic variation and diversity of local I. ***: Based on external morphological characterizations, nine individuals(64.3%)were successfully identified as I. granulatus, while five individuals were recognized only as Ixodes sp. due to lack of morphological characters visible and development during that stage. Molecular analysis of local I. granulatus using COI gene revealed 93%–94% sequence homology from available sequence in Gen Bank and was in concordance with the morphological identification. Furthermore, a low intraspecific variation was observed among the species of I. granulatus collected from different localities(0%–3.7%).Conclusions: These findings demonstrated for the first time the establishment of COI gene for identifying I. granulatus nymphal tick which is of paramount importance to the control of potential tick-borne infections in Malaysia. Moreover, this study provides evidence that a combination of morphology and molecular data was corroborated as an accurate tool for tick identification.

Ethylene Conversion to Higher Hydrocarbon over Copper Loaded BZSM-5 in the Presence of Oxygen

The successful production of higher hydrocarbons from methane depends on the stability or the oxidation rate of the intermediate products. The performances of the BZSM-5 and the modified BZSM-5 catalysts were tested for ethylene conversion into higher hydrocarbons. The catalytic experiments were carried out in a fixed-bed micro reactor at atmospheric pressure. The catalysts were characterized using XRD, NH3-TPD, and IR for their structure and acidity. The result suggests that BZSM-5 is a weak acid. The introduction of copper into BZSM-5 improved the acidity of BZSM-5. The conversion of ethylene toward higher hydrocarbons is dependent on the acidity of the catalyst. Only weaker acid site is required to convert ethylene to higher hydrocarbons. The loading of Cu on BZSM-5 improved the selectivity for higher hydrocarbons especially at low percentage. The reactivity of ethylene is dependent on the amount of acidity as well as the presence of metal on the catalyst surface. Cul%BZSM-5 is capable of converting ethylene to higher hydrocarbons. The balances between the metal and acid sites influence the performance of ethylene conversion and higher hydrocarbon selectivity. Higher loading of Cu leads to the formation of COx.

Permittivity models for determination of moisture content in Hevea Rubber Latex

The commercial open-ended coaxial probe(Agilent 85070E)is the most commonly used sensor to determine the permittivity of wet *** paper extends the usability and applicability of the sensor to the estimation of moisture content in Hevea Rubber *** dielectric constant and loss factor were measured using the commercial probe whilst the moisture contents were obtained using the standard oven drying *** results were obtained between the different dielectric models to predict moisture content in *** the dielectric constant and the loss factor of rubber latex linearly increased with moisture content at all selected *** equations were established to relate both the dielectric constant and the loss factor with moisture *** equations were used to predict moisture content in Hevea latex from measured values of the dielectric constant and the loss *** lowest mean relative error between actual and predicted moisture contents was 0.02 at 1 GHz when using the Cole-Cole dielectric constant calibration equation.

AIM:To derive a Malaysia guideline and consensus as part of the Malaysia Retina Group's efforts for diagnosis,treatment,and best practices of diabetic macular edema(DME).The experts'panel suggests that the treatment algorithm to be divided into groups according to involvement the central *** purpose of DME therapy is to improve edema and achieve the best visual results with the least amount of treatment ***:On two different occasions,a panel of 14 retinal specialists from Malaysia,together with an external expert,responded to a questionnaire on management of DME.A consensus was sought by voting after compiling,analyzing and discussion on first-phase replies on the round table discussion.A recommendation was deemed to have attained consensus when 12 out of the 14 panellists(85%)agreed with ***:The terms target response,adequate response,nonresponse,and inadequate response were developed when the DME patients'treatment responses were first *** panelists reached agreement on a number of DME treatment-related issues,including the need to classify patients prior to treatment,firstline treatment options,the right time to switch between treatment modalities,and side effects associated with *** this agreement,recommendations were derived and a treatment algorithm was ***:A detail and comprehensive treatment algorithm by Malaysia Retina Group for the Malaysian population provides guidance for treatment allocation of patients with DME.

Taurine protects against retinal and optic nerve damage induced by endothelin-1 in rats via antioxidant effects

Endothelin-1（ET-1）, a potent vasoconstrictor, is involved in retinal vascular dysregulation and oxidative stress in glaucomatous eyes. Taurine（TAU）, a naturally occurring free amino acid, is known for its neuroprotective and antioxidant properties. Hence, we evaluated its neuroprotective properties against ET-1 induced retinal and optic nerve damage. ET-1 was administered intravitreally to Sprague-Dawley rats and TAU was injected as pre-, co-or post-treatment. Animals were euthanized seven days post TAU injection. Retinae and optic nerve were examined for morphology, and were also processed for caspase-3 immunostaining. Retinal redox status was estimated by measuring retinal superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, and malondialdehyde levels using enzyme-linked immuosorbent assay. Histopathological examination showed significantly improved retinal and optic nerve morphology in TAU-treated groups. Morphometric examination showed that TAU pre-treatment provided marked protection against ET-1 induced damage to retina and optic nerve. In accordance with the morphological observations, immunostaining for caspase showed a significantly lesser number of apoptotic retinal cells in the TAU pre-treatment group. The retinal oxidative stress was reduced in all TAU-treated groups, and particularly in the pre-treatment group. The findings suggest that treatment with TAU, particularly pre-treatment, prevents apoptosis of retinal cells induced by ET-1 and hence prevents the changes in the morphology of retina and optic nerve. The protective effect of TAU against ET-1 induced retinal and optic nerve damage is associated with reduced retinal oxidative stress.

AIM:To determine the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy(DR)among diabetic patients at the primary health clinics in Selangor,***:All diabetic patients were screened in Retinal Disease Awareness Programme(RDAP)and those who had significant DR changes were referred to the hospital for further *** analyses were done to determine the prevalence of DR and sociodemographic characteristics among patients with *** and multivariable analysis using Logistic regression were performed to find association and predictor factors in this ***:A total of 3305 patients aged 40y and above were screened for *** patients screened,9%patients were found to have DR and other visual complication such as maculopathy(0.9%),cataract(4.8%)and glaucoma(0.4%).The mean age of patients without retinopathy was 57.82±8.470y and the mean age of patients with DR was 63.93±*** 61.5%of the patients screened were aged below 60y and 38.5%were aged 60y and *** of the patients screened were women 58.5%and Malay in the age group of 50-59y,while 27%were aged *** association were found between age,sex,race,visual loss and ***:Although the prevalence of DR among patients is not alarming,effective interventions need to be implemented soon to avert a large burden of visual loss from DR.

Effect of phosphatation and calcination on the environmental behaviour of sediments

Dredging operations produce considerable quantities of materials, to be managed and this opens an opportunity for valorization in civil engineering. However, the contamination of the dredged sediment has become a major problem to solve. The major contaminants are heavy metals and organic compounds This study focuses on the use of phosphoric acid(H3 PO4) to stabilize heavy metals from sediments an destroy organic matter by calcination at 650 °C with a goal of using sediments in roadworks. Severa studies have been conducted in this field. The stabilized materials obtained have been used in civ engineering. The main purpose of this work is to discuss the environmental behavior of marine sedimen treated by phosphatation and calcination. Two types of phosphoric acids were used. The p H dependenc leaching test has been used as the basic characterization to evaluate the effect of the type of phosphori acid on the metals behavior in a valorization scenario. The standard leaching test and the Toxicit Characteristic Leaching Procedure(TCLP) were conducted as compliance tests. In regards of the obtaine results, the environmental assessment has also shown a reduction in the availability of targeted heav metals in alkaline environment whatever the type of acid used for treatment. This opens opportunitie for co-valorization.
