The antidepressant effects of the flavonoid-rieh fraction of Monodora tenuifolia seed extract were examined by assess- ing the extent of attenuation of behavioural alterations and oxidative damage in the rats that were stressed by forced swim test. Com- pared with the model control group, the altered behavioural parameters were attenuated significantly （P 〈 0.05） in the group treated with the flavonoid-rich fraction （100 and 200 mg·kg^-1）, comparable to the group treated with the standard drug, fluoxetine （10 mg·kg^-1）. The flavonoid-rich fraction and fluoxetine improved significantly （P 〈 0.05） the activities of the antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase as well as other biochemical parameters such as reduced glutathione, protein, and nitrite in the brain of the stressed rats. These results suggested that the flavonoid-rich fraction of Monodora tenuifolia seed extract exerted the antidepres- sant-like effects which could be useful in the management of stress induced disease.

Objective:To determine the beneficial effects of the methanol extract of Synsepalum dulcificum on some biochemical ***:In this study,rats were orally administered(gavage)with methanol extracts at doses of 0 mg/kg(Group 1,as normal group),100 mg/kg(Group 2),200 mg/kg(Group 3)and 500 mg/kg(Group 4)body weight per day for 28 ***:Acute toxicity study showed that the methanol extract was not toxic to rats up to 5000 mg/*** the results,the 100 mg/kg doses of the extract significantly(P<0.05)reduced serum levels of bilirubin,low density lipoprotein,alanine aminotransferase and glucose after 14 d compared with those after 28 d.A significant difference(P<0.05)was observed in the malondialdehyde and serum protein concentration in Group 4 while glucose concentration decreased significantly(P<0.05)in Group 1 and Group 4 after 14 d compared with 28 *** high density lipoprotein significantly increased(P<0.05)in Group ***:The fruit has no negative effect on some biochemical parameters in albino rats.

Objective:To investigate the effects of the flavonoid rich fraction of Monodora tenuifolia seed on the haematology,histopathology and liver profile of Wistar albino ***:Toxicity study was investigated on the flavonoid rich fraction of Monodora tenuifolia in rats administered different concentrations orally for 28 d using standard laboratory ***:The LD_(50)of the flavonoid rich fraction was found to be above 5000 mg/kg body weight in mice observed for 48 *** the Day 14,biochemical markers of liver injury such as serum alanine aminotransferase,and aspartate aminotransferase decreased significantly(P0.05).There was non-significant(P>0.05)effect observed across the groups in the levels of serum total protein,albumin,globulin,urea and *** result of histological examination showed various degrees of peribiliary hepatitis after the Day 14 which fizzled out after the Day ***:The result therefore suggests that the seed extract is potentially safe.

Fluted pumpkin(FP;Telfairia occidentalis)is an edible vegetable,grown in West Africa,that is used in traditional medicine for its regulatory effects on the male *** articles concerning the effects of FP were identified by searching PubMed,PubChem,Scopus,Springer,ResearchGate,Google Scholar and Web of Science;this literature was to better understand the effects of FP seed(FPS)and leaf(FPL)extracts on the *** showed that in experimental animals extracts of FPL and FPS at 1/100 of the lethal dose promoted testis regeneration and improved testosterone concentration and sperm quality,while at higher doses they had antifertility *** extracts of FPS and FPL,including ethanol,aqueous,methanol and hydroethanolic,had protective effects on the testes of study animals at lower doses(>50 mg/kg body weight),but at higher doses(>200 mg/kg body weight)they inhibited hormone synthesis,sperm quality and histomorphological structure,under both normal and disease *** posttreatment effects of FPS on the gonads were reversible in young mature rats and FPS had slight systemic toxic ***,there are inconsistencies in some of the published results,the current evidence suggests that FPS and FPL have both profertility and reversible antifertility effects in experimental animals.

Physico-Chemical Soil Properties and Their Correlations with Maize and Cassava Production in Ebonyi, Nigeria

This study analyzed relationships between soil properties and food crop production in Ebonyi State of southeast Nigeria. Free survey was conducted after three zones (Agbaja, Akaeze and Ikwo) in the state were purposely selected for representation of the soil sampling. Two types of sampling were conducted;Auger sampling at 0 - 20 and 20 - 40 cm depths and soil profile sampling. Annual crop yield data on maize and cassava for the state from 1988 to 2017 were collected from Agriculture Development Program. Variations in properties among soil horizons were obtained using coefficient of variations while soil parameters were regressed against crop yields to establish their relationships. Results showed that fine sand, total sand, bulk density, total porosity, soil pH, and available phosphorus significantly (p = 0.05) differ from 0 - 20 cm and 20 - 40 cm depths. Also, cassava yield correlated negatively with base saturation, and organic matter at 0.05 probability level;with exchangeable Ca and Na at 0.01 probabilities level but correlated positively with bulk density and available water capacity at 0.01 and 0.05 probability levels, respectively. Similarly, maize yield correlated negatively with available phosphorus and total nitrogen at 0.05 probability level;and with total porosity and exchangeable Ca at 0.01 probability level;and then correlated positively with available water capacity, and bulk density, at 0.01 probability level;with coarse sand at 0.05 probability level. However, soils of Ebonyi State are fertile but some of the chemical properties are still low, therefore, it is paramount to improve the quality of the soil to achieve improved food security in the state.

There has been increased interest in soil organic carbon in recent times because of its role in carbon sequestration. Different parent materials affect soil properties and hence will influence how much carbon is sequestered by soil. The study was conducted in June 2019 to investigate soil carbon stock in forest soils with respect to their parent materials in three States in South-eastern Nigeria. Sampling was aided by the location map of the area and free soil survey method was used to locate sampling points. 0ne profile was dug in each location and described using the Food and Agricultural Organization guideline. A total of twelve soil samples were collected and analyzed for selected properties. Results showed that sand content was significantly higher in soils under coastal plain sands (851.96 g·kg−1) and was lowest in soils of Imo clay shale (605.60 g·kg−1). Clay content was higher in soils of Imo clay shale (277.34 g·kg−1) and was lowest in coastal plain sand (118.80 g·kg−1). Silt and clay had moderate variation in coastal plain sand (>15 ≤ 35%) and high variations in Asu River and Imo clay shale (CV > 35%). The soils studied were generally acidic with values ranging (3.52) in soils formed from coastal plain sand, followed by forest soils of Imo clay shale (3.64) and Asu river group (3.85). Sulfate-reducing bacteria(SRB)has been pointed out as one of the causative agents of microbial induced corrosion in the marine *** address this problem,novel strategies are being experimented as against the earlier methods which have been banned due to their toxic effects on useful aquatic ***,the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of non-toxic perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane(PFDTS)on resistance of hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane)/phosphoric acid-treated zinc oxide(PDMS/PA-treated ZnO)coatings to SRB-induced biofouling and *** surface features of the coatings before and after exposure to SRB/NaCl solution were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Wettability of the coatings before and after exposure was also *** interaction of SRB with the coatings was investigated by FTIR *** resistance performance of the modified coatings against SRB-induced corrosion was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS).The EIS measurements revealed that 0.20 g PFDTS-based coating displayed highest corrosion resistance with impedance modulus of 6.301×10^10 after 15 d of exposure to SRB/NaCl *** results were corroborated by surface and chemical interaction analyses,and thus,indicate that 0.20 g PFDTSmodified PDMS/PA-treated ZnO coating has potentials for excellent SRB-induced corrosion resistance and anti-biofouling performance.

In this study,the corrosion behavior of the CuAl-NiC abradable seal coating system in chloride solution was investigated to systematically research the effect of porosity,multiphase,and multilayer structure on the corrosion *** the composition and structure analysis,the corrosion process of the system was predicted and then verified with mercury intrusion porosimetry,cross-section SEM/EDS analysis,and electrochemical *** results demonstrated that the interphase selective corrosion caused the porosity of the top layer to decrease first and then increase during the corrosion *** interlayer galvanic corrosion,determined by the pore connectivity,is crucial for corrosion failure.

A Comparative Study of Groundwater between Geological Groups of Southern Benue Trough,Nigeria Using Modelling Approach

Groundwater studies were carried out between two geological groups to evaluate factors that influences groundwater *** achieve this,30 groundwater samples were *** such as pH,Electrical Conductivity(Ec),Total Dissolved Solids(TDS),Total Hardness(TH),and hydrochemical characteristics(Na^(2+),K^(+),Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+),HCO_(3)^(¯),NO_(3)^(¯),Cl^(¯),CO_(2)^(3¯),and SO_(4)^(2¯))of groundwater were *** revealed that the pH value for Asu River Group ranges from 5.3 to 7.5,and that of Eze Aku Group ranges from 4.1 to *** was observed that areas around the mines had low pH *** results that were obtained were interpreted using various hydrogeochemical *** plots reflected that groundwater within the two geological groups fell within Ca˗Mg˗SO_(4) and Ca˗Mg˗*** from End˗member plots showed that 96%of groundwater samples analyzed were categorized under carbonate weathering,4%fell silicate *** plots revealed that interactions between groundwater and surrounding host rocks are mostly the main processes responsible for chemical characteristics of groundwater,Diamond field plots suggested that groundwater within the study were categorized to be high in Ca+Mg&SO_(4)+Cl,the plot of Ca^(2+)/(HCO_(3)^(¯)+SO_(4)^(2¯))against Na^(+)/Cl^(¯)revealed that groundwater was considered to be within the natural state for the two *** plot of TDS against TH showed that groundwater is classified as soft *** study revealed there was no significant difference between factors that influence groundwater within the two geological.
