How much carbon can the Siberian boreal taiga store： a case study of partitioning among the above-ground and soil pools

In the context of global carbon cycle management, accurate knowledge of carbon content in forests is a relevant issue in contemporary forest ecology. We measured the above-ground and soil carbon pools in the darkconiferous boreal taiga. We compared measured carbon pools to those calculated from the forest inventory records containing volume stock and species composition data. The inventory data heavily underestimated the pools in the study area（Stolby State Nature Reserve, central Krasnoyarsk Territory, Russian Federation）. The carbon pool estimated from the forest inventory data varied from 25（t ha-1）（low-density stands） to 73（t ha-1）（highly stocked stands）. Our estimates ranged from 59（t ha-1）（lowdensity stands） to 147（t ha-1）（highly stocked stands）. Our values included living trees, standing deadwood, living cover, brushwood and litter. We found that the proportion of biomass carbon（living trees）： soil carbon varied from99：1 to 8：2 for fully stocked and low-density forest stands,respectively. This contradicts the common understanding that the biomass in the boreal forests represents only16–20 % of the total carbon pool, with the balance being the soil carbon pool.

Influence of high-temperature convective flow on viability of Scots pine needles(Pinus sylvestris L.)

During a forest fire,plants are affected by high temperatures causing *** the time of burning,it is difficult to record temperature changes in tree crowns and the associated effects on *** paper presents the results of modelling a high-temperature effect simulating a convective flow from a ground *** of the response was carried out by the parameters of rapid fluorescence(Fv/Fm,ETR),the state of the pigment complex,and the relative water content in the *** characterize the degree of heat endurance and short-term effects concerning thermal damage,saplings of Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris L.)were used at different times during the growing season(June,July,August,September).Experimental heating at 55℃ lasted for 5 and 10 *** were different levels of heat resistance by the *** in June show that heating of the saplings significantly suppressed *** July,August,and September,the photochemical quantum yield(Fv/Fm)was restored to 75%and 60%from the initial level after 5-and 10-min heating,*** electron transport rate(ETR)for saplings in September was restored to their initial level within 3 days after a short heat *** of the photosynthetic activity in needles was observed after a 5-min impact,but by the end of the study period,restoration had not reached control values.A longer heating of 10 min resulted in an irreversible suppression of photosynthesis and destruction of the photosynthetic apparatus,as evidenced by the decrease in the number of photosynthetic pigments.

Let v be a vertex operator superalgebra and g =（1 2 ···k） be a k-cycle which is viewed as an automorphism of the tensor product vertex operator superalgebra v■*** this paper,we construct an explicit isomorphism from Ag(v■k) to A（v） if k is odd and to Aσ（v） if k is even where σ is the canonical automorphism of v of order 2 determined by the superspace structure of *** recover previous results by Barron（2016）and Barron and vander Werf（2014） that there is a one-to-one correspondence between irreducible g-twisted v■k-modules and irreducible v-modules（*** σ-twisted v-modules） when k is odd（***）.This explicit isomorphism is expected to be useful in our further study on the Zhu algebra of the fixed point subalgebra.

Effects of atmospheric circulation on summertime precipitation variability and glacier mass balance over the Tuyuksu Glacier in Tianshan Mountains, Kazakhstan

The amount and the form of precipitation have significant effects on glacier mass balances in high al- titude mountain areas by controlling the accumulation, the ablation and the energy balance of a glacier through impact on the surface albedo. The liquid precipitation has negative effects on glacier accumulation and may in- crease the ablation of surface ice through the heat input for melting. The timing and the forms of precipitation over glacierized regions depend on the weather processes both locally and regionally. Early studies showed that regional to large-scale atmospheric circulation processes play a key role in affecting the precipitation events over glaciers. This paper analyzed the relationship between the inter-annual variability of the summertime precipitation over the Tuyuksu Glacier and the atmospheric circulation types, which related to various atmospheric circulation types in the Northern Hemisphere. Results indicated that the decrease in the duration of zonal processes and the increase in the meridional northern processes were observed in the last decade. The total summer precipitation associated with these processes also increased along with an increase of summertime solid precipitation. Although the decadal fluctuation of glaciological parameters were found in dependent of the above large-scale atmospheric circulation processes, global warming was a dominant factor leading to the mass loss in the recent decades under the back- ground of the increase in precipitation over the Tuyuksu Glacier.

Juvenile survival curves in a solitary ground squirrel with a prolonged hibernation:effects of individual characteristics,environment,and maternal investment

Age of maturation and behavioral tactics in male yellow ground squirrel Spermophilus fulvus during mating season

Life-history theory predicts that in hibemators age of maturation is related positively to body size and negatively to the duration of active season aboveground. Yellow souslik is a large-sized ground squirrel with long hibernation, which suggests late maturation. We used four-year field observations of marked individuals to determine the age of maturation in males through analysis of age-dependent variation in body size, mass, androgen status, timing of spring emergence, ranging patterns and social behavior during the mating season. Yearling males were smaller, lighter, had lower level of fecal testosterone, emerged later and had smaller home ranges than older males. Social activity and the number of females encountered did not differ between age classes. After the second hibernation none of the studied parameters varied with age. Cluster analysis revealed two behavioral tactics：＂active＂ males （adults only） emerged earlier, ranged more widely, initiated more contacts, encountered more females and were heavier than ＂passive＂ males （both yearling and adult）. Thus, males of S. fulvus reached adult size and matured after two hibernations, which is relatively fast for such a big species with short active period. Indirect evidence for copulations and high variation among yearlings in all parameters suggest that some of them might successfully compete with adults. Active tactic of wandering and searching for females is energetically costly, and probably only adult males in good physical condition can afford it, whereas passive tactic of residing is energy saving and good for adults in poor condition and for yearlings that are continuing to grow.

Use of Twitter in disaster rescue: lessons learned from Hurricane Harvey

Despite the increasingly prominent role of social media in disaster events,studies analyzing its use in rescue operations remain *** Harvey hit Texas with unprecedented rainfall and flooding in 2017 and was marked by widespread use of social media for rescue *** conducted a survey of 195 Twitter users in Houston and surrounding communities who had requested for rescue during *** objective was to investigate our targeted group’s socioeconomic and flood exposure characteristics,report the effectiveness of Twitter,and highlight lessons learnt and suggestions made for its use in future rescue *** revealed that those requesting rescue on Twitter were better educated,employed(80%),and homeowners(81%).Majority of them were flooded(87%),but remained satisfied with current location and did not consider *** relatives and friends for rescue was most responsive and yielded higher assistance-provided rate than using *** respondents found Twitter helpful,but identified issues such as not knowing when volunteers received their requests or whether they would send *** suggested promoting Twitter accounts and hashtags that accept emergency *** study provides baseline information and actionable suggestions for first responders,community managers,and resilience practitioners to improve future rescue missions.

Disaster Impacts Surveillance from Social Media with Topic Modeling and Feature Extraction: Case of Hurricane Harvey

Twitter can supply useful information on infrastructure impacts to the emergency managers during major disasters,but it is time consuming to filter through many irrelevant *** studies have identified the types of messages that can be found on social media during disasters,but few solutions have been proposed to efficiently extract useful *** present a framework that can be applied in a timely manner to provide disaster impact information sourced from social *** framework is tested on a well-studied and data-rich case of Hurricane *** procedures consist of filtering the raw Twitter data based on keywords,location,and tweet attributes,and then applying the latent Dirichlet allocation(LDA) to separate the tweets from the disaster affected area into categories(topics) useful to emergency *** LDA revealed that out of 24 topics found in the data,nine were directly related to disaster impacts-for example,outages,closures,flooded roads,and damaged *** such as frequent hashtags,mentions,URLs,and useful images were then extracted and *** relevant tweets,along with useful images,were correlated at the county level with flood depth,distributed disaster aid(damage),and population *** correlations were found between the nine relevant topics and population density but not flood depth and damage,suggesting that more research into the suitability of social media data for disaster impacts modeling is *** results from this study provide baseline information for such efforts in the future.

It is proved that Dong-Li-Mason’s associated associative algebra Ag(v?k) is isomorphic to Zhu’s algebra A(v) explicitly. This result recovers a previous result that there is a one-to-one correspondence between irreducible g-twisted v?k-modules and irreducible v-modules.

Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders following liver transplantation: where are we now?

Liver transplantation has emerged as a life-saving treatment for several patients with acute liver failure, end stage liver disease and primary hepatic malignancies. However, long term immunosuppressive therapy aiming to reduce the risk of transplant rejection increases the incidence of several com-plications including malignancies. This is illustrated by the observation of a high ratio between observed and expected cases of lymphoproliferative disorders following liver transplantation. Despite a huge heterogeneity in morphological appearance of these disorders ranging from reactive-like lesions to real lymphomas, they are collectively termed posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders. In this review we will provide an overview of this rare but challenging disorder as a complication of liver transplantation.
