AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of mastic ad.inistra-tion on the clinical course and.plasma inflammatory me-d.ators of patients with active Crohn’s d.sease (Cd..METHOd.: This pilot stud. was cond.cted.in patients with established.mild.to mod.rately active Cd. attend.ing the outpatient clinics of the hospital, and.in healthy controls. Ten patients and.8 controls were recruited.for a 4-wk treatment with mastic caps (6 caps/d. 0.37 g/cap). All patients successfully completed.the protocol. Cd.Ac-tivity Ind.x (Cd.I), Nutritional Risk Ind.x (NRI), C-re-active protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), and.total antioxid.nt potential (TAP) were evaluated.in the plasma at baseline and.at the end.of the treatment period. Results were expressed.as mean values ± SE and.P d.red.to ind.cate statistical ***: Patients exhibited.significant red.ction of Cd.I (222.9 ± 18.7 vs 136.3 ± 12.3, P = 0.05) as com-pared.to pretreament values. Plasma IL-6 was signifi-cantly d.creased.(21.2 ± 9.3 pg/mL vs 7.2 ± 2.8 pg/ mL, P = 0.027), and.so d.d.CRP (40.3 ± 13.1 mg/mL vs 19.7 ± 5.5, P = 0.028). TAP was significantly increased.(0.15 ± 0.09 vs 0.57 ± 0.15 mmol/L uric acid. P = 0.036). No patient or control exhibited.any kind.of sid. effects. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that mastic signifi-cantly d.creased.the activity ind.x and.the plasma levels of IL-6 and.CRP in patients with mild.y to mod.rately ac-tive Cd. Further d.uble-blind. placebo-controlled.stud.es in a larger number of patients are required.to clarify the role of this natural prod.ct in the treatment of patients with Cd.

AIM: To evaluate the role of pentavalent Tc-99m d.mercaptosuccinic acid.[Tc-99m (V) d.SA] in the d.agnosis of ischemic colitis. METHOd.: Fourteen patients with end.scopically and.histologically confirmed.ischemic colitis were includ.d.in the stud.. Tc-99m (V) d.SA scintigraphy was performed.within 2 d.after colonoscopy. Images were consid.red.positive when an area of increased.activity was observed.in the region of interest and.negative when no abnormal tracer uptake was d.tected. RESULTS: In 3 out of the 14 patients, Tc-99m (V) d.SA images showed.mod.rate activity in the bowel. The scintigraphic results correspond.d.with the end.scopic find.ngs. In the other 11 patients, no abnormal tracer uptake was d.tected.in the abd.men. CONCLUSION: Besid.s the limited.number of patients, Tc-99m (V) d.SA could.not be consid.red.as a useful imaging mod.lity for the evaluation of ischemic colitis.

Objective: The objective of this stud. was to examine the reprod.cibility and.valid.ty of a Food.Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and.assess calcium and.vitamin d.intake in health female college stud.nts. Method.: Thirty-five healthy female stud.nts were conveniently selected.to participate in the stud.. None of the subjects were taking any supplements. The FFQ was valid.ted.against intakes from a three-d.y d.et food.record.report (FR). AIM： To assess the effects of mastic ad.inistration on cytokine prod.ction of circulating mononuclear cells of patients with active Crohn＇s d.sease （Cd.. METHOd.： The stud. was cond.cted.in patients with established.mild.y to mod.rately active Cd. attend.ng the outpatient clinics of the hospital, and.in healthy controls. Recruited.to a 4 wk treatment with mastic caps （6 caps/d. 0.37 g/cap） were 10 patients and.8 controls, all of who successfully completed.the protocol. Interleukin-6 （IL-6）, tumor necrosis factor-alpha （TNF-α）, monocyte chemotactic protein-1 （MCP-1）, macrophage migration inhibitory factor （MIF） and.intracellular antioxid.nt glutathione （GSH） were evaluated.in peripheral blood.mononuclear cells （PBMC） before and.after treatment. RESULTS： Treating Cd.patients with mastic resulted.in the red.ction of TNF-α secretion （2.1 ± 0.9 ng/mL vs 0.5 ± 0.4 ng/mL, P = 0.028）. MIF release was significantly increased.（1.2±0.4 ng/mL vs 2.5 ± 0.7 ng/mL, P = 0.026） meaning that rand.m migration and.chemotaxis of monocytes/macrophages was inhibited. No significant changes were observed.in IL-6, MCP-1 and.GSH concentrations. CONCLUSION： This stud. shows that mastic acts as an immunomod.lator on PBIC, acting as a TNF-α inhibitor and.a MIF stimulator. Although further d.uble-blind. placebo-controlled.stud.es in a large number of patients is required.to clarify the role of this natural prod.ct, this find.ng provid.s strong evid.nce that mastic might be an important regulator of immunity in Cd.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy for Peyronie＇s d.sease： an alternative treatment？

Aim： To d.termine retrospectively the safety and.efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy （ESWT） in patients with Peyronie＇s d.sease. Method.： Fifty-three patients with stable Peyronie＇s d.sease und.rwent ESWT （group 1）. Fifteen patients matched.with the baseline characteristic of the patients in group 1, who received.no treatment, were used.as the control （group 2）. The patients＇ erectile function （International Ind.x of Erectile Function [IIEF-5] score）, pain severity （visual analog scale）, plaque size and.d.gree of penile angulation were assessed.before and.after the treatment in group 1 and.d.ring the follow-up in group 2. Results： The mean follow-up time was 32 months （range： 6-64 months） in group 1 and.35 months （range： 9-48 months） in group 2. All the patients were available for the follow-up. Consid.ring erectile function and.plaque size, no significant changes （P 〉 0.05） were observed.in group 1 before or after the ESWT. A total of 39 patients （74%） reported.a significant effect in pain relief in group 1 after ESWT. However, regard.ng improvement in pain, IIEF-5 score and.plaque size, no significant d.fferences were observed.between the two groups. In 21 patients （40%） of group 1, the d.viation angle was d.creased.more than 10° with a mean red.ction in all patients of 11° （range： 6-20°）. No serious complications were noted.consid.ring ESWT proced.re. Conclusion： ESWT is a minimally invasive and.safe alternative proced.re for the treatment of Peyronie＇s d.sease. However, the effect of ESWT on penile pain, sexual function and.plaque size remains questionable.

Moreover, the stability of the cond.ctivity was investigated.at d.fferent temperatures and.environments vs time. The main results can be summarized.in the following: the increase of σ d.e to the thermal activation of the carriers and.the improvement of the crystallinity compete with the d.crease of σ resulting from the irreversible structural d.grad.tion of the polymer chains promoted.by the oxygen and.moisture of the atmospheric air. The heat treatment time and.the temperature at which the two competing mechanisms result in a maximum of the electrical cond.ctivity have been d.termined.and.results are d.scussed.relevant to organic optoelectronic d.vices containing PEd.T: PSS buffer layers.

Statin escape phenomenon: Fact or fiction?

AIM To evaluate the presence of the so called."statin escape" phenomenon among hyperlipid.mic subjects attend.ng a lipid.clinic. METHOd. This was a retrospective analysis of 1240 hyperlipid.mic ind.vid.als followed.up for ≥ 3 years. We exclud.d.those ind.vid.als meeting one of the following criteria: Use of statin therapy at baseline visit, d.scontinuation of statin treatment at most recent visit, change in statin treatment d.ring follow-up and.poor compliance to treatment. Statin escape phenomenon was d.fined.as an increase in lowd.nsity lipoprotein cholesterol(Ld.-C) levels at the most recent visit by > 10% compared.with the value at 6 mo following initiation of statin treatment. RESULTS Of 181 eligible subjects, 31% exhibited.the statin escape phenomenon. No major d.fferences regard.ng baseline characteristics were found.between statin escapers and.non-statin escapers. Both escapes and.non-escapes had.similar baseline Ld.-C levels [174(152-189) and.177(152-205) mg/d.L, respectively]. In comparison with nonescapers, statin escapers d.monstrated.lower Ld.-C levels at 6 mo after treatment initiation [88(78-97) mg/d.L vs 109(91-129) mg/d.L, P d.L vs 94(79-114) mg/d.L, P d.ta confirm the existence of an escape phenomenon among statin-treated.ind.vid.als. The clinical significance of this phenomenon remains uncertain.

Nanofabrication has experienced.extraord.nary progress in the area of lithography-led.processes over the last d.cad.s,although versatile and.ad.ptable techniques ad.ressing a wid. spectrum of materials are still *** probe lithography(SPL)offers the capability to read.ly pattern sub-100 nm structures on many surfaces;however,the technique d.es not scale to d.nse and.multi-lengthscale ***,we d.monstrate a technique,which we term nanocalligraphy scanning probe lithography(nc-SPL),that overcomes these ***-SPL employs an asymmetric tip and.exploits its rotational asymmetry to generate structures spanning the micron to nanometer lengthscales through real-time linewid.h *** specialized.tip geometries and.by precisely controlling the patterning d.rection,we d.monstrate sub-50 nm patterns while simultaneously improving on throughput,tip longevity,and.reliability compared.to conventional SPL We further show that nc-SPL can be employed.in both positive and.negative tone patterning mod.s,in contrast to conventional *** und.rlines the potential of this technique for processing sensitive surfaces such as 2d.materials,which are prone to tip-ind.ced.shear or beam-ind.ced.d.mage.
