Ecosystem management in paludified boreal forests:enhancing wood production,biodiversity,and carbon sequestration at the landscape level

Canada’s boreal forest represents an important contributor of the world’s wood supply industry. However,maintaining or increasing productivity of the boreal forest may be challenging in areas dominated by forested peatlands. Moreover, sustainable management of these forests must also consider other important aspects of the forest ecosystem such as biodiversity and carbon sequestration. To address these concerns, ecosystem-based management has been implemented in some Canadian jurisdictions, such as in regions where a large portion of the boreal forest is dominated by forested peatlands. The objectives of this paper are(1) to summarize our current understanding of how natural disturbances influence stand dynamics and biodiversity in forested peatlands, and(2) to review the main differences between natural and managed forest stands with respect to soil properties, stand productivity, understory plant communities. We also discuss how even-age management regime succeeds or fails to preserve old forests and how this loss affects both forest structure and habitat diversity at the landscape *** conclude by showing how, in boreal forested peatlands, forest management could contribute to carbon sequestration and mitigate projected climate change.

Does playing a sports active video game improve object control skills of children with autism spectrum disorder?

Background: Active video games(AVGs) encourage whole body movements to interact or control the gaming system, allowing the opportunity for skill development. Children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) show decreased fundamental movement skills in comparison with their typically developing(TD) peers and might benefit from this approach. This pilot study investigates whether playing sports AVGs can increase the actual and perceived object control(OC) skills of 11 children with ASD aged 6–10 years in comparison to 19 TD children of a similar *** was a secondary ***: Actual(Test of Gross Motor Development) and perceived OC skills(Pictorial Scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence for Young Children) were assessed before and after the intervention(6 × 45 min).Results: Actual skill scores were not improved in either group. The ASD group improved in perceived skill. All children completed the required dose and parents reported the intervention was ***: The use of AVGs as a play-based intervention may not provide enough opportunity for children to perform the correct movement patterns to influence skill. However, play of such games may influence perceptions of skill ability in children with ASD, which could improve motivation to participate in physical activities.

A conductometric nitrate biosensor based on methyl viologen/Nafion/nitrate reductase（NR） interdigitated electrode for heavy metal determination was *** activity of NR（EC 1.***.6.2） from Asper gillusniger（***） was assayed as a function of metal concentration in the presence of Cu^2＋,Zn^2＋,Cd^2＋ and Pb^2＋.Parameters influencing the performance of the biosensor were optimized for the application of it in the inhibition determination of heavy metal *** limits for Cu^2＋,Zn^2＋,Cd^2＋ and Pb^2＋ were about 0.05,0.5,0.1 and 1.0 μmol/L,*** results show that NR activity could not be regained after exposure to Cu^2＋,but could be partially recovered after exposure to Zn^2＋,Pb^2＋ and Cd^2＋.

Fluorination of the donor polymer or non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) in an organic photovoltaic device is an effective method to improve device *** there have been many studies on donor polymer fluorination,blends containing both a fluorinated donor and fluorinated NFA have rarely been *** this study,we use two donor polymers (4'-FT-HTAZ and 4'-FT-FTAZ) and two NFAs (ITIC-Th and ITIC-Th1) with different amounts of fluorine (from 2F to 6F) to investigate how the degree of fluorination in a blend impacts device *** find that fluorinating the NFA leads to a higher short-circuit current density (Jsc) and fill factor (FF),however,the open-circuit voltage (Voc) is decreased due to a depressed lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) *** additional fluorine to the donor polymer does not have a large effect on the Jsc or FF,but it does lead to an improved *** fluorinating the NFA and having more fluorine on the donor polymer,we obtain both a high Jsc and Voc simultaneously,leading to a power conversion efficiency over 10% in the case of 4'-FT-FTAZ:ITIC-Th1,which has the most amount of fluorine (6F).

Regeneration of many cell types found in adult organs relies upon the presence of relatively small pools of undifferentiated stem cells. Initial studies that attempted to isolate stem cells and propagate them in vitro have been complemented by analysis of stem cells in their endogenous tissues where they are subject to a variety of regulatory cues. This has been facilitated by the advent of new methods for lineage tracing and genetic manipulation of stem cells and their associated niche cells. The picture that is emerging is that different stem cell populations utilize diverse processes to ensure maintenance of the stem cell pool accompanied by production of cells committed to regenerate differentiated cells.

Wastewater analysis for nicotine,cocaine,amphetamines,opioids and cannabis in New York City

According to current surveys and overdoses data,there is a drug crisis in the ***-based epidemiology(WBE)is an evolving discipline that analyses wastewater samples to detect drugs and metabolites to estimate drug consumption in a certain *** study demonstrates how drug relative presence could be tracked by testing wastewater,providing real-time results,in different boroughs in New York City throughout 1 *** developed and fully validated two analytical methods,one for 21 drugs and metabolites,including nicotine,cocaine,amphetamines,opioids and cannabis markers;and another for the normalization factor *** methods were performed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS)using positive electrospray ionization,achieving a limit of quantification of 5–10 ng/L for drugs and metabolites,and 0.01 mg/L for *** methods were applied to 48 one-time grab wastewater samples collected from six wastewater treatment plants in New York City(Manhattan,The Bronx,Queens and Brooklyn),eight different times throughout 2016,before and after major holidays,including Memorial Day,4th of July,Labour Day and New Year’*** this study,the drug group normalized concentrations present in the wastewater samples,in decreasing order,were cocaine,nicotine,opioids,cannabis and *** looking at individual compounds,the one with the highest normalized concentration was benzoylecgonine(BE),followed by cotinine,morphine and 11-nor-9-carboxy-tetrahydrocannabinol(THCCOOH).To estimate community use,these concentrations were multiplied by the corresponding correction factor,and the most present were THCCOOH,followed by BE,cotinine and *** comparing the treatment plants by drug group(nicotine,cocaine,amphetamines,opioids and cannabis),samples collected from The Bronx had the highest normalized concentrations for nicotine,cocaine and opioids;The Bronx and Manhattan for cannabis;and Manhattan and Queens for *** mo

Tunable photocycle kinetics of a hybrid bacteriorhodopsin/quantum dot system

The inclusion of inorganic nanoparticles in biological environments has led to the creation of hybrid nanosystems that are employed in a variety of applications. One such system includes quantum dots (QDs) coupled with the photoactive protein, bacteriorhodopsin (BR), which has been explored in developing enhanced photovoltaic devices. In this work, we have discovered that the kinetics of the BR photocycle can be manipulated using CdSe/CdS (core/shell) QDs. The photocycle lifetime of protein samples with varying QD amounts were monitored using time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. Concentration-dependent elongations of the bR and M state lifetimes were observed in the kinetic traces, thus suggesting that excitonic coupling occurs between BR and QDs. We propose that the pairing of BR with QDs has the potential to be utilized in protein-based computing applications, specifically for real-time holographic processors, which depend on the temporal dynamics of the bR and M photointermediates.

From Sméagol to Gollum: Mechanical Stress and Bone Remodelling

This imaginary transformation from Sméagol to Gollum is a dramatization of the illusive repercussions of mechanical stress affecting bone. This paper presents the main ideas of mechanical stress and bone remodelling from a novel’s perspective. The object of this study is to provide evidence for new ways to explore bone’s functional adaptation to mechanical stress made through the copious interpretation and integration of new and existing literature. It tackles the underlying biology of bone cells and how they detect and react to strain stimuli. The different types of mechanical demands in daily activities are sifted through and any misconceptions found fallible in literature are refined. A personal experience of a stress fracture is reviewed to parallel the implications that lead to the incident with the findings on the link between mechanical stress and bone remodelling. Some factors regarding age, gender and ethnicity and the interplay with mechanical stress influencing bone remodelling are considered. Brief overviews of three new medical novelties in bone healing are outlined, hoping that these interventions of proper medical techniques can be a change for the better: one from Gollum to Sméagol rather than vice versa.

Transforming growth factor-β1 induces intestinal myofibroblast differentiation and modulates their migration

AIM： To investigate the effects of transforming growth factor β1 （TGF-β1） on the differentiation of colonic lamina propria fibroblasts （CLPF） into myofibroblasts in vitro.METHODS： Primary CLPF cultures were incubated with TGF-β1 and analyzed for production of m-smooth muscle actin （α-SMA）, fibronectin （FN） and FN isoforms. Migration assays were performed in a modified 48-well Boyden chamber. Levels of total and phosphorylated focal adhesion kinase （FAK） in CLPF were analyzed after induction of *** not change α-SMA levels, while TGF-β1 treatment for 6 d significantly increased α-SIVlA production. Short term incubation （6 h） with TGF-β1 enhanced CLPF migration, while long term treatment （6 d） of CLPF with TGF-β1 reduced migration to 15%-37% compared to untreated cells. FN and FN isoform mRNA expression were increased after short term incubation with TGF-β1 （2 d） in contrast to long term incubation with TGF-β1 for 6 d. After induction of migration, TGF-β1-preincubated CLPF showed higher amounts of FN and its isoforms and lower levels of total and phosphorylated FAK than untreated cells.CONCLUSION： Long term incubation of CLPF with TGF-β1 induced differentiation into myofibroblasts with enhanced α-SMA, reduced migratory potential and FAK phosphorylation, and increased FN production. In contrast, short term contact （6 h） of fibroblasts with TGF-β1 induced a dose-dependent increase of cell migration and FAK phosphorylation without induction of α-SMA production.

Outdoor Universal Thermal Comfort Index Climatology for Alaska

Data from 456 surface meteorological sites in Alaska, eastern Russia and northwest Canada for 1979-2017 were used to model hourly universal thermal comfort indices (UTCIs) under consideration of Alaska-appropriate clothing. The results served to determine a high-resolution climatology of thermal comfort levels for Alaska at various temporal and spatial scales as well as the frequency of thermal stress levels. On 1979-2017 average, various degrees of cold stress occurred with highest percentage on the Alaska West Coast and along the Arctic Ocean. In the continental and Inside Passage region, no thermal stress had the highest percentage of occurrence. In Interior Alaska, both strong heat and extreme cold stress occurred occasionally. At most sites and in all Alaska Köppen-Geiger bio-climate regions, the absolute range between monthly means of daily minimum and maximum UTCIs was larger than that of monthly means of daily minimum and maximum air temperatures. Major contributors to thermal discomfort (shortwave radiation, air temperature, moisture, wind speed) varied among bio-climate regions and in the diurnal and annual courses.
