Wh.tefly feeding beh.vior and retention of a foregut-borne crinivirus exposed to artificial diets with.different ph.values

Transmission of plant viruses by ph.toph.gous h.mipteran insects encompasses complex interactions underlying a continuum of processes involved in virus acquisition, retention and inoculation combined with.vector feeding beh.vior. h.re, we investigated th. effects of dietary ph.on wh.tefly （Bemisia tabaci） feeding beh.vior and release of Lettuce infectious yellows virus （LIYV） virions retained in th. vector＇s foregut. Electrical penetration graph.analysis revealed th.t variables associated with.wh.tefly probing and ingestion did not differ significantly in ph.（4, 7.4, and 9） adjusted artificial diets. To investigate virus retention and release, wh.teflies allowed to acquire LIYV virions in a ph.7.4 artificial diet were fed ph.4, 7.4, or 9 virion-free artificial （clearing） diets. Immunofluorescent localization analyses indicated th.t virions remained bound to th. foreguts of approximately 20%-24% of vectors after th.y fed on each.of th. 3 ph. adjusted clearing diets. Wh.n RNA preparations from th. clearing diets were analyzed by reverse transcription （RT） nested-PCR and, in some cases, real-time qPCR, successful amplification of LIYV-specific sequence was infrequent but consistently repeatable for th. ph.7.4 diet but never observed for th. ph.4 and 9 diets, suggesting a weak ph.dependent effect for virion release. Viruliferous vectors th.t fed on each.of th. 3 ph.adjusted clearing diets transmitted LIYV to virus-free plants. Th.se results suggest th.t ch.nges in ph.values alone in artificial diet do not result in observable ch.nges in wh.tefly feeding beh.viors, an observation th.t marks a first in th. feeding of artificial diet by wh.tefly vectors; and th.t th.re is a potential causal and contingent relationsh.p between th. ph.in artificial diet and th. release/inoculation of foregut bound virions.

Periph.ral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since th. availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sough., including th. use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGCs). h.wever, th. use of tNGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of th. regenerating tissue, wh.ch.limits th.ir application to sh.rt nerve lesion defects(typically sh.rter th.n 3 cm). Given th. importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we h.poth.sized th.t enabling th. growth.of blood vessels from th. surrounding tissue into th. regenerating nerve with.n th. tNGC would h.lp eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In th.s study, we reported th. application of macroscopic h.les into th. tubular walls of silk-based tNGCs and compared th. various features of th.se improved silk^(+) tNGCs with.th. tubes with.ut h.les(silk^(–) tNGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomograph. and h.stological analyses, we were able to prove th.t th. use of silk^(+) tNGCs induced th. growth.of blood vessels from th. adjacent tissue to th. intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly h.gh.r number of blood vessels in th. silk^(+) group was found compared with.autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at th. distal coaptation point compared with.th. silk^(–) tNGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In th. 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth.of blood vessels th.ough.th. tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGCs, but with.ut improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves th.t macroporous tNGCs increase th. vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a sh.rt-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Borderline resectable pancreatic cancer: Definitions and management

Pancreatic cancer is th. fourth.leading cause of cancer death.in th. United States. Wh.le surgical resection remains th. only curative option, more th.n 80% of patients present with.unresectable disease. Unfortunately, even among th.se wh. undergo resection, th. reported median survival is 15-23 mo, with.a 5-year survival of approximately 20%. Disappointingly, over th. past several decades, despite improvements in diagnostic imaging, surgical tech.ique and ch.moth.rapeutic options, only modest improvements in survival h.ve been realized. Neverth.less, it remains clear th.t surgical resection is a prerequisite for ach.eving longterm survival and cure. Th.re is now emerging consensus th.t a subgroup of patients, previously considered poor candidates for resection because of th. relationsh.p of th.ir primary tumor to surrounding vasculature, may benefit from resection, particularly wh.n preceded by neoadjuvant th.rapy. Th.s stage of disease, termed borderline resectable pancreatic cancer, h.s become of increasing interest and is now th. focus of a multiinstitutional clinical trial. h.re we outline th. h.story, progress, current treatment recommendations, and future directions for research.in borderline resectable pancreatic cancer.

Welfare and Market Impacts of Food Safety Measures in Ch.na: Results from Urban Consumers' Valuation of Product Attributes

Th.s study provides an economics assessment of various food safety measures in Ch.na. A ch.ice experiment approach.is used to elicit Ch.nese consumer preferences for various food safety attributes using data from a 2008 urban consumer survey. An alternative welfare calculation is used to model aggregate market impacts of select food safety measures. Our results sh.w th.t th. largest welfare gains are found in th. current government-run certiifcation program. Th. implementation of a th.rd-party certiifcation system, a traceability network and a product label would generate signiifcant value and would h.lp reduce current system inefifciencies in Ch.na. Th.s study builds on previous research.and provides an alternative approach.for calculating consumer valuation of safety and quality attributes th.t can be used to estimate aggregate economic and welfare impacts.

A series of lith.um metasilicate （Li2SiO3） powder materials h.s been successfully synth.sized by th. microwave-assisted h.droth.rmal route using lith.um h.droxide and tetraeth.l-orth.silicate-derived sol precursors. Ceramic powders were obtained under h.droth.rmal conditions of autogenous pressure in th. presence of a nonionic surfactant. Th. production of pure and well-crystallized Li2 SiO3 using very sh.rt reaction times at low temperatures was sh.wn by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and N2 adsorption-desorption analyses. Synth.sized Li2SiO3 particles were nanocrystalline and exh.bited different morph.logies and specific surface areas depending on th. synth.sis conditions. Additionally, th. capability of selected Li2SiO3 samples to absorb h.0 and CO2 was evaluated via th.rmogravimet- ric analyses by varying th. temperature, carrier gas, and water vapor concentration. Li2SiO3 particles exh.bited interesting textural and morph.logical ch.racteristics th.t make th.m suitable for use as a CO2 absorbent and wh.ch.suggest th.t th.y also h.ve th. potential to be used in oth.r applications.

Th.s work h.s two main purposes：（i） introducing th. basic concepts of molecular dynamics analysis to material scientists and engineers, and （ii） providing a better understanding of instrumented indentation measurements, presenting an example of nanoindentation and scratch.test simulations. To reach.th.se purposes, th.ee-dimensional molecular dynamics （MD） simulations of nanoindentation and scratch.test tech.ique were carried out for generic th.n films th.t present BCC crystalline structures. Structures were oriented in th. plane （100） and placed on FCC diamond substrates. A pair wise potential was employed to simulate th. interaction between atoms of each.layer and a repulsive radial potential was used to represent a sph.rical tip indenting th. sample. Mech.nical properties of th.s generic material were obtained by varying th. indentation depth.and dissociation energy. Th. load-unload curves and coefficient of friction were found for each.test; on th. oth.r h.nd, dissociation energy was varied sh.wing a better mech.nical response for films th.t present grater dissociation energy. Structural ch.nge evolution was observed presenting vacancies and slips as th. depth.was varied.

Coprocessing of bitumen-derived feeds and biomass th.ough.a fluid catalytic cracking(FCC) route h.s th. potential to assist in th. reduction of fuel and petroleum product carbon footprints wh.le meeting government regulatory requirements on renewable transportation fuels. Th.s approach.is desirable because green h.use gas(Gh.) emissions for producing renewable biofuels are significantly lower th.n th.se for fossil fuels, and coprocessing can be executed using existing refining infrastructure to save capital cost. Th. present study investigates th. specific FCC performances of pure h.avy gas oil(h.O) derived from oil sands synth.tic crude, and a mixture of 15 v% canola oil in h.O using a commercial equilibrium catalyst under typical FCC conditions. Cracking experiments were performed using a bench.scale Advanced Cracking Evaluation(ACE) unit at fixed weigh. h.urly space velocity(Wh.V) of 8 h.(-1), 490–530℃, and catalyst/oil ratios of 4–12 g/g. Th.s work focuses on some cracking ph.nomena resulting from th. presence of oxygen in th. blendda lower h.at requirement for cracking due to th. exoth.rmic water formation, wh.ch.also entails lower h.drogen yield at a given severity. Th. distribution of feed oxygen in gaseous and liquid products, th. mitigation in Gh. emissions, and th. tech.ological and economical advantages of th. coprocessing option are also discussed.

Lifsh.tz-Slyozov-Wagner(LSW)*** general trend was an increase in th. coarsening kinetics with.h.gh.r Ni and Al *** h.gh.st h.rdness was found in th. alloys with.h.gh.r fraction albeit th.se compositions are less resistant to coarsening and h.ve been reported to present a low room-temperature ductility.
