Lyotropic liquid crystals(LLcs)produced by the self-assembly of surfactant in water represent an important class of highly ordered soft materials that have a wide range of *** study investigates the LLcs formed by a zwitterionic surfactant(tetradecyldimethylaminoxide,c 14 DMAO)in *** organization of c 14 DMAO within the LLcs was determined based on a detailed analysis of small-angle X-ray scattering measure-ments and polarized microscopy observations of a typical *** to the singe-phase region,which has a hexagonal organization,several two-phase regions were observed,exhibiting the coexistence of hexago-nal/cubic,cubic/lamellar,and hexagonal/lamellar *** phase behavior showed an obvious dependence on temperature,with more pronounced two-phase regions at lower *** the LLcs as a matrix,Au nanospheres,nanoellipsoids,and nanorods were prepared without requiring additional reducing *** three-and one-dimensional Au nanomaterials could be converted to two-dimensional plates via the introduc-tion of a small amount of cationic surfactant to the LLcs,such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(cTAB)and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide([c 16 MIm]B),which showed pronounced surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity towards solid *** LLcs loaded with cTAB(or[c 16 MIm]B)and HAucl 4 exhibited slightly different structures and mechanical strength from the original LLcs,thereby forming a new class of highly crowded colloidal materials.

Field Efficacy of a Biopesticide Based on <i>Tithonia diversifolia</i>against Black Sigatoka Disease of Plantain (<i>Musa</i>spp., AAB)

Black Sigatoka disease (BSD) is a foliar disease caused by Mycosphaerella fijiensis, responsible of reduction of the photosynthetic area of banana plant and yield at harvest since it has an influence on fruit physiology. The control of BSD relies on the use of chemicals which are not affordable for the small holder farmers and increase the cost of production. Moreover, this chemical control is ineffective, negatively impacting the environment and human health, and is at the origin of strain resistance. Tithonia diversifolia is known as rich in many compounds such as mineral elements, defense metabolites, some phytochemicals;and it is increasingly used in agriculture. Recently, the protective effect of Tithonia diversifolia liquid extract against BSD development on plantain vivoplants in the nursery was highlighted. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of a biopesticide base on Tithonia diversifolia on the BSD development in a plantain field under high disease pressure. The effect of Tithonia diversifolia biopesticide on Mycosphaerella fijiensis mycelial growth in vitro was evaluated. An experimental field at the flowering stage was selected and treated with the biopesticide base on Tithonia diversifolia at three different concentrations: undiluted (100%), diluted at 1/2 (50%) and diluted at 1/4 (25%) for 17 weeks. The disease severity, the number of functional leaves, the youngest spotted leaf (YSL) and the youngest necrotic leaf (YNL) were evaluated in course of time. The biopesticide treatments significantly (P ce the BSD severity in course of time, but it is more effective for the most diluted concentration (25%). The number of leaves increases in course of time as well as the rank of the YSL and the YNL confirming the efficiency of BSD control. Fluorination of suspended graphene

Suspended graphene is exposed to different fluorine-containing species produced by a plasma source fed with cF4 precursor gas. We investigate the fluorination process by selecting two different kinetic energies for the ions striking the graphene surface. The chemical-bonding environment is discussed, and the control of the graphene-fluorination homogeneity is investigated at the individual graphene sheets. The modifications of the electronic and structural properties are examined by scanning photoelectron microscopy, micro-Raman analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results are compared with those obtained for supported graphene on copper. Suspended graphene provides a quasi-ideal model for investigating the intrinsic properties of irradiated carbon nano-systems while avoiding damage due to backscattered atoms and recoil due to a supporting substrate.

chemometric methods are applied for the purpose of extracting relevant information from transient absorption spectroscopy data probing the photochromism of molecules from the family of salicylidene aniline. The process consists of an ultrafast excited state intramolecular proton transfer occurring from an enol form which is then followed by a cis-trans isomerization to finally reach a trans-keto photo-product. This work focuses on the potential of combining multivariate curve resolution for modeling pure profiles and two dimensional correlation spectroscopy data analysis for providing information on the dynamics of spectral features. The results obtained for one derivative of salicylidene aniline provide information regarding the number of species created after the proton transfer and characterization of their absorption spectra and their kinetics in the picosecond time scale. The spectral resolution of two cis-keto* forms is proposed for the first time. It is also found that both cis-keto* species are involved in the formation of the trans-keto photo-product. The main precursor of the trans-keto photo-product is the cis-keto* form which has the shortest characteristic time.

Late cretaceous Foraminiferal Faunas from the Saiqu“mélange”in Southern Tibet

As one of the mélanges in the southern side of the Yarlung-Zangbo suture zone, the Saiqu mélange in southern Tibet is important for understanding the evolution of the Neo-Tethys ocean. The age of the Saiqu mélange, however, has been debated due to the lack of reliable fossil evidence in matrix strata. Based on lithological similarities with platform strata in southern Tibet and limited fossils from exotic blocks, previous studies variously ascribed the Saiqu mélange to be Triassic in general, Late Triassic, or Late cretaceous. Here we reported planktonic foraminiferal faunas from the matrix strata of the Saiqu mélange. The new fossils yield a Late cretaceous age, which is so far the best age constraint for the mélange. Regional stratigraphic correlation indicates that the cretaceous Oceanic Red Beds （cORBs） in Saiqu may be time equivalent to the cORBs of the Zongzhuo Formation in neighboring regions. Thus the Saiqu m^lange should be correlated to the Upper cretaceous Zongzhuo Formation rather than the Triassic Xiukang Group, as previously suggested.

Esophageal metastasis of stem cell-subtype hepatocholangio carcinoma:Rare presentation of a rare tumor

Hepatocholangiocarcinoma(c Hcc-Icc) is a rare primary hepatic tumor defined by the presence of histological features of both hepatocellular carcinoma(Hcc) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(Icc). Its prevalence ranges from 1%-5% of all primary liver cancers. We report the case of a 55-year-old cirrhotic male patient admitted to our university hospital for dysphagia, revealing a 10 cm lower-third esophageal metastasis of an unresectable c Hcc-Icc with stemcell features. computed tomography and abdominal magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed multiple hepatic lesions combining features of both Hcc and Icc, associated with synchronous bone metastasis. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses of biopsies from the esophageal lesion and the hepatic tumor confirmed the diagnosis of c Hcc-Icc with a stem cell-subtype, according to the World HealthOrganization classification. After a multidisciplinary meeting, the patient was treated with chemotherapy. He received two cycles of a gemcitabine plus cisplatin regimen before bone progression, and he died 3 mo after the initial diagnosis.

The mode of abscisic acid （ABA） action, and its relations to drought adaptive responses in particular, has been a captivating area of plant hormone research for much over a decade. The hormone triggers stomatal closure to limit water loss through transpiration, as well as mobilizes a battery of genes that presumably serve to protect the cells from the ensuing oxidative damage in prolonged stress. The signaling network orchestrating these various responses is, however, highly complex. This review summarizes several significant advances made within the last few years. The biosynthetic pathway of the hormone is now almost completely elucidated, with the latest identification of the ABA4 gene encoding a neoxanthin synthase, which seems essential for de novo ABA biosynthesis during water stress. This leads to the interesting question on how ABA is then delivered to perception sites. In this respect, regulated transport has attracted renewed focus by the unexpected finding of a shoot-to-root translocation of ABA during drought response, and at the cellular level, by the identification of a B-galactosidase that releases biologically active ABA from inactive ABA-glucose ester. Surprising candidate ABA receptors were also identified in the form of the Flowering Time control Protein A （FcA） and the chloroplastic Magnesium Protoporphyrin-IX chelatase H subunit （cHLH） in chloroplast-nucleus communication, both of which have been shown to bind ABA in vitro. On the other hand, the protein（s） corresponding to the physiologically detectable cell-surface ABA receptor（s） is （are） still not known with certainty. Genetic and physiological studies based on the guard cell have reinforced the central importance of reversible phosphorylation in modulating rapid ABA responses.
