Loss of Hox5 function results in myofibroblast mislocalization and distal lung matrix defects during postnatal development

Alveologenesis is the final stage of lung development and is responsible for the formation of the principle gas exchange units called alveoli. The lung mesenchyme, in particular the alveolar myofibroblasts, are drivers of alveolar development, however,few key regulators that govern the proper distribution and behavior of these cells in the distal lung during alveologenesis have been identified. While Hox5 triple mutants(Hox5 aabbcc) exhibit neonatal lethality, four-allele, compound mutant mice(Hox5 AabbCc) are born in mendelian ratios and are phenotypically normal at birth. However, they exhibit defects in alveologenesis characterized by a BPD-like phenotype by early postnatal stages that becomes more pronounced at adult stages. Invasive pulmonary functional analyses demonstrate significant increases in total lung volume and compliance and a decrease in elastance in Hox5 compound mutants. SmA+ myofibroblasts in the distal lung are distributed abnormally during peak stages of alveologenesis and aggregate, resulting in the formation of a disrupted elastin network. Examination of other key components of the distal lung ECm, as well as other epithelial cells and lipofibroblasts reveal no differences in distribution. Collectively, these data indicate that Hox5 genes play a critical role in alveolar development by governing the proper cellular behavior of myofibroblasts during alveologenesis.

The pervasive effects of lighting environments on sensory drive in bluefin killifish： an investigation into male/male competition, female choice, and predation

Sensory drive predicts that the conditions under which signaling takes place have large effects on signals, sensory systems, and behavior. The coupling of an ecological genetics approach with sen sory drive has been fruitful. An ecological genetics approach compares populations that experi ence different environments and asks whether population differences are adaptive and are the result of genetic and/or environmental variation. The multifaceted effects of signaling environ ments are wellexemplified by the bluefin killifish. In this system, males with blue anal fins are abundant in tanninstained swamps that lack UV/blue light but are absent in clear springs where UV/blue light is abundant. Past work indicates that lighting environments shape genetic and envir onmental variation in color patterns, visual systems, and behavior. Less is known about the select ive forces creating the across population correlations between UV/blue light and the abundance of blue males. Here, we present three new experiments that investigate the roles of lighting environ ments on male competition, female mate choice, and predation. We found strong effects of lighting environments on male competition where blue males were more likely to emerge as dominant in teastained water than in clear water. Our preliminary study on predation indicated that blue males may be less susceptible to predation in teastained water than in clear water. However, there was little evidence for female preferences favoring blue males. The resulting pattern is one where the effects of lighting environments on genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity match the direction of selection and favor the expression of blue males in swamps.

Emerging and re-emerging human infectious diseases:A systematic review of the role of wild animals with a focus on public health impact

Infectious diseases continue to impose unpredictable burdens on global health and economies, a subject that requires constant research and updates. In this sense, the objective of the present article was to review studies on the role of wild animals as reservoirs and/or dispersers of etiological agents of human infectious diseases in order to compile data on the main wild animals and etiological agents involved in zoonotic outbreaks. A systematic review was carried out using PRISmA guidelines, using the Pubmed, Scopus and SciELO platforms as data banks. The descriptors used were "zoonosis", "human infectious diseases" and "wild animals". The results show that wild animals(mainly bats, birds and primates) play an important role in the dissemination of etiological agents(mainly viruses, as a new coronavirus called 2019 Novel Coronavirus) in extensive geographic regions. moreover, these wild animal organisms can act as the site for essential biotic synergy among several pathogenic microorganisms, promoting a higher rate of adaptation, mutation and even genetic recombination, with consequent stimulation of new strains and subtypes, inducing new infectious agents with unknown virulent potential. In conclusion, the monitoring of these diseases and adequate preparation for possible epidemics and pandemics are fundamental conditions for the mitigation of their future impact. The zoonotic threat of these etiological agents and the impact on public health can be enormous as shown by the ongoing epidemic of 2019 novel coronavirus(2019-nCoV) infections.

In vitro Ruminal Gas Production Kinetics of Four Fodder Trees Ensiled With or Without molasses and Urea

This study investigated if the addition of urea （U）, molasses （m） or their 1：1 （v/v） mixture during ensiling increases the nutritional value of forage from four fodder trees （Prunus persica, Leucaena esculenta, Acacia farnesiana, and Prunus domestica）. Forage samples of fodder trees were collected in triplicate （three individual samples of each species） and subjected to an in vitro gas production （GP） procedure. Fermentation at 24 h （GP 24）, short-chain volatile fatty acids （SCFA）, and microbial crude protein production （mCP）, in vitro organic matter digestibility （OmD）, metabolizable energy （mE） and dry matter degradability （DmD） were estimated. Forage samples were incubated for 72 h in an incubator at 39oC and the volume of GP was recorded at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h of incubation using the reading pressure technique. The rumen fermentation profiles were highest for P. persica, which showed the highest （P〈0.0001） DmD, mE, OmD, SCFA, GP 24 and mCP. On the other hand L. esculenta had the lowest （P〈0.0001） DmD, SCFA, mCP; P. domestica had the lowest （P〈0.0001） OmD. The addition of m to silage increased （P〈0.0001） mE and OmD, as well as GP. However, the addition of U and the mixture of U and m reduced （P〈0.0001） DmD, mE, OmD, SCFA, GY 24 and mCP. These results show that P. persica has the highest nutritive value and L. esculenta the lowest for ruminants. Additionally, the addition of m to forage from fodder trees increases rumen GP and fermentation, which may improve nutrient utilization in ruminants.

The percutaneous device dilemma describes etiological factors, centered around the disrupted epithelial tissue surrounding non-remodelable devices, that contribute to rampant percutaneous device infection. Natural percutaneous organs, in particular their extracellular matrix mediating the “device”/epithelium interface, serve as exquisite examples to inspire longer lasting long-term percutaneous device design. For example, the tooth’s imperviousness to infection is mediated by the epithelium directly surrounding it, the junctional epithelium (JE). The hallmark feature of JE is formation of hemidesmosomes, cell/matrix adhesive structures that attach surrounding oral gingiva to the tooth’s enamel through a basement membrane. Here, the authors survey the multifaceted functions of the JE, emphasizing the role of the matrix, with a particular focus on hemidesmosomes and their five main components. The authors highlight the known (and unknown) effects dental implant - as a model percutaneous device - placement has on JE regeneration and synthesize this information for application to other percutaneous devices. The authors conclude with a summary of bioengineering strategies aimed at solving the percutaneous device dilemma and invigorating greater collaboration between clinicians, bioengineers, and matrix biologists.

Integrating volunteered smartphone data with multispectral remote sensing to estimate forest fuels

Essentially, the knowledge of science alone offers little utility. With-out the ability to investigate, apply and communicate, science serves no purpose. That is not to undermine the importance of scientific knowledge, but there currently exists a major flaw in our high school educational system that inhibits meaningful learning experiences for most students. Characterization of Gibberellin Receptor mutants of Barley （Hordeum vulgare L.）

The sequence of Gidl （a gene for a gibberellin （GA） receptor from rice） was used to identify a putative orthologue from barley. This was expressed in E. coil, and produced a protein that was able to bind GA in vitro with both structural specificity and saturability. Its potential role in GA responses was investigated using barley mutants with reduced GA sensitivity （gsel mutants）. Sixteen different gsel mutants each carried a unique nucleotide substitution in this sequence. In all but one case, these changes resulted in single amino acid substitutions, and, for the remaining mutant, a substitution in the 5＇ untranslated region of the mRNA is proposed to interfere with translation initiation. There was perfect linkage in segregating populations between new mutant alleles and the gsel phenotype, leading to the conclusion that the putative GID1 GA receptor sequence in barley corresponds to the Gsel locus. Determination of endogenous GA contents in one of the mutants revealed enhanced accumulation of bioactive GA1, and a deficit of C20 GA precursors. All of the gsel mutants had reduced sensitivity to exogenous GA3, and to AC94377 （a GA analogue） at concentrations that are normally ＇saturating＇, but, at much higher concentrations, there was often a considerable response. The comparison between barley and rice mutants reveals interesting differences between these two cereal species in GA hormonal physiology.

The mechanisms of color production in black skin versus red skin on the heads of New World vultures

A determination of how the color of animal integument is produced is a starting point for investigations into the function and evolution of *** mechanisms that give rise to the color of bare skin of New World vultures are largely ***,we investigate the source of color production in the bare skin of Turkey Vultures(Cathartes aura)and Black Vultures(Coragyps atratus).Using UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy,we found evidence that hemoglobin is the primary pigment responsible for the red coloration of the bare skin on the heads of Turkey Vultures,and that eumelanin is responsible for the black coloration of the bare skin on the heads of Black *** microscopy of incisional skin samples further supported these mechanisms of color production by revealing the presence of numerous blood vessels near the surface of the Turkey Vulture skin,and a high concentration of melanosomes in the skin of Black *** high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC),we detected carotenoids within the skin of both species with significantly higher total concentrations of carotenoids in the skin of Turkey Vultures compared to the skin of Black *** carotenoids detected were dietary carotenoids that typically produce yellow coloration when accumulated in integument and were present in low *** hypothesize that the dietary carotenoids present do not contribute to the color of the skin,but rather help to compensate for the lack of melanosomes found in Turkey Vulture *** presence of additional carotenoids may act as an antioxidant to minimize UV damage when the bare Turkey Vulture head skin is exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time when soaring and scavenging for food.

Ultrasmall Au nanoclusters have been proven to effectively enhance the catalytic performance of NiFe layered double hydroxides(NiFe-LDHs)toward oxygen evolution reaction(OER),yet the surface ligand effect of the Au nanoclusters still remains ***,a systematic study is reported to examine the OER performance of NiFe-LDHs supported atom-precise all alkynyl-protected[Au_(28)(~tBuC≡C)17]~-nanoclusters(Au_(28)-Alkynyl in short)and thiolate-protected Au_(28)(TBBT)_(20)(TBBT=4-tert-butylbenzene thiol)counterp arts(Au_(28)-Thiolate in short).The Au_(28)-Alkynyl cluster has characteristic absorbance feature,and its composition is verified by mass *** possesses a drastically different structure from the reported mixed ligand protected Au_(28)***,the NiFe-LDHs loaded with Au_(28)-Alkynyl exhibited a superior OER performance than the sample loaded with Au28-Thiolate under the same conditions,evidenced by a smaller overpotential of 205 mV at the current density of 10 mA·cm^(-2)and a lower Tafel slope value of 41.0 mV·dec^(-1)in 1 mol·L^(-1)*** excellent performance is attributed to the interfaces created between the NiFe-LDHs and the Au nanoclusters,as density functional theory calculations reveal that more significant charge transfer occurs in Au_(28)-Alkynyl/NiFeLDHs catalyst,and more importantly,the energy barrier of the potential-determining step in the OER process for Au28-Alkynyl/NiFe-LDHs is much lower than that of Au28-Thiolate/NiFe-LDHs hence favors the electrocatalytic reaction.
