Surface Modification on Ti-30Ta Alloy for Biomedical Application

Titanium and titanium alloys are currently being used for clinical biomedical applications due to their high strength, corrosion resistance and elastic modulus. The Ti-30Ta alloy has gotten extensive application as the important biomedical materials. The substrate surface of the Ti-30Ta alloy was altered either by chemical or topographical surface modification. The biocompatibility of an implant is closely related to its surface properties. Thus surface modification is one of effective methods for improving the biocompatibility of implants. The development status of biomedical materials has been summarized firstly, the biomedical application. In this study Ti-30Ta alloy surface was investigate as-casting (Group 1) modified with alkaline and heat-treatments in NaOH with 1.5M at 60°C for 24 hrs (Group 2), alkaline and heat-treatments with SBF-coatings by immersion in NaOH and SBFX5 for 24hrs (Group 3), anodization process was performed in an electrolyte solution containing HF (48%) and H2SO4 (98%) with the addition of 5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) 35V for 40 min (Group 4) and ion beam etching with 1200 eV ions with a beam current of 200 mA for a 3 hrs etch (Group 5). SEM was used to investigate the topography, EDS the chemical composition, and surface energy was evaluate with water contact angle measurement. SEM results show different structure on the surface for each group. EDS spectra identified similarity on Group 1, 4 and 5. The results indicate for group 2 an amorphous sodium tantalate hydrogel layer on the substrate surface and for group 3 the apatite nucleation on substrate surface. The Group 4 shows unorganized and vertically nanotubes and Group 5 shows a little alteration in the topography on the substrate surfaces. Overall the contact angle shows Group 5 the most hydrophobic and Group 4 the most hydrophilic. The study indicates Group 3 and 4 with potential for biomedical application. Background： Despite the rapid growth in the incidence of acute myocardial infarction （AMI） in China, there is limited information about patients＇ experiences after AMI hospitalization, especially on long-tern1 adverse events and patient-reported outcomes （PROs）. Methods： The China Patient-centered Evaluative Assessment of Cardiac Events （PEACE）-Prospective AMI Study will enroll 4000 consecutive AM I patients from 53 diverse hospitals across China and follow them longitudinally for 12 months to docunlent their treatment, recovery, and outcomes. Details of patients＇ medical history, treatment, and in-hospital outcomes are abstracted from medical charts. Comprehensive baseline interviews are being conducted to characterize patient demographics, risk factors, presentation, and healthcare utilization. As part of these interviews, validated instruments are administered to measure PROs, including quality of life, symptoms, mood, cognition, and sexual activity. Follow-up interviews, measuring PROs, medication adherence, risk factor control, and collecting hospitalization events are conducted at 1, 6, and 12 months after discharge. Supporting documents for potential outcomes are collected for adjudication by clinicians at the National Coordinating Center. Blood and urine samples are also obtained at baseline, 1 - and 12-month follow-up. In addition, we are conducting a survey of participating hospitals to characterize their organizational characteristics. Conclusion： The China PEACE-Prospective AMI study will be uniquely positioned to generate new information regarding patient＇s experiences and outcomes alter AMI in China and seiwe as a foundation for quality improveinent activities.

We study the optimization of collisionless shock acceleration of ions based on hydrodynamic modelling and simulations of collisional shock waves in gaseous *** models correspond to the specifications required for experiments with the CO2 laser at the Accelerator Test Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Vulcan Petawatt system at Rutherford Appleton *** both cases,a laser prepulse is simulated to interact with hydrogen gas jet *** is demonstrated that by controlling the pulse energy,the deposition position and the backing pressure,a blast wave suitable for generating nearly monoenergetic ion beams can be *** on the energy absorbed and the deposition position,an optimal temporal window can be determined for the acceleration considering both the necessary overdense state of plasma and the required short scale lengths for monoenergetic ion beam production.

Adenocarcinoma arising at ileostomy sites:Two cases and a review of the literature

Total colectomy with ileostomy placement is a treatment for patients with inflammatory bowel disease or familial adenomatous polyposis(FAP). A rare and late complication of this treatment is carcinoma arising at the ileostomy site. We describe two such cases: a 78-year-old male 30 years after subtotal colectomy and ileostomy for FAP, and an 85-year-old male 50 years after colectomy and ileostomy for ulcerative colitis. The long latency period between creation of the ileostomies and development of carcinoma suggests a chronic metaplasia due to an irritating/inflammatory causative factor. Surgical excision of the mass and relocation of the stoma is the mainstay of therapy, with possible benefits from adjuvant chemotherapy. Newly developed lesions at stoma sites should be biopsied to rule out the possibility of this rare ileostomy complication.

Octave-spanning coherent supercontinuum generation in silicon on insulator from 1.06μm to beyond 2.4μm

Efficient complementary metal-oxide semiconductor-based nonlinear optical devices in the near-infrared are in strong *** to two-photon absorption in silicon,however,much nonlinear research is shifting towards unconventional photonics *** this work,we demonstrate the generation of an octave-spanning coherent supercontinuum in a silicon waveguide covering the spectral region from the near-to *** input pulses of 18 pJ in energy,the generated signal spans the wavelength range from the edge of the silicon transmission window,approximately 1.06 to beyond 2.4μm,with a−20 dB bandwidth covering 1.124–2.4μ*** octave-spanning supercontinuum was also observed at the energy levels as low as 4 pJ(−35 dB bandwidth).We also measured the coherence over an octave,obtaining|g_()12^(1)(λ)>90%,in good agreement with the *** addition,we demonstrate optimization of the third-order dispersion of the waveguide to strengthen the dispersive wave and discuss the advantage of having a soliton at the long wavelength edge of an octave-spanning signal for nonlinear *** research paves the way for applications,such as chip-scale precision spectroscopy,optical coherence tomography,optical frequency metrology,frequency synthesis and wide-band wavelength division multiplexing in the telecom window.

Two virtual joint centers for nitrogen agronomy were established between the UK and China to facilitate collaborative research aimed at improving nitrogen use efficiency(NUE)in agricultural production systems and reducing losses of reactive N to the *** focus areas were improving fertilizer NUE,use of livestock manures,soil health,and policy development and knowledge *** to fertilizer NUE included attention to application rate in the context of yield potential and economic considerations and the potential of improved practices including enhanced efficiency fertilizers,plastic film mulching and cropping *** utilization of livestock manures requires knowledge of the available nutrient content,appropriate manure processing technologies and integrated nutrient management *** carbon,acidification and biodiversity were considered as important aspects of soil *** centers identified a range of potential actions that could be taken to improve N management,and the research conducted has highlighted the importance of developing a systemslevel approach to assessing improvement in the overall efficiency of N management and avoiding unintended secondary effects from individual *** this context,the management of fertilizer emissions and livestock manure at the farm and regional scales appear to be particularly important targets for mitigation.

Surface Water Quality Response to Land Use Land Cover Change in an Urbanizing Catchment: A Case of Upper Chongwe River Catchment, Zambia

The Upper Chongwe River Catchment has recently been overexploited for water resources with increased complaints by various water users about the deteriorating quality of surface water within the sub-catchment. This study was motivated by the need to investigate and understand the response of surface water quality to land use land cover (LULC) change due to urbanization. Water samples, collected at 9 sampling sites from 2006 to 2017, were analyzed for water quality using the weighted arithmetic water quality index and trend using the Mann-Kendall statistics. LULC change is detected and analyzed in ERDAS Imagine 2014 and ArcGIS 10.4 using 2006 Landsat 5 TM and 2017 Landsat 8 OLI imageries. The relationship between LULC change and water quality was performed with multiple regression analysis and Pearson correlation. The results reveal that Built-up area, Grassland and surface water increased by 5.48%, 13.34% and 0.03% respectively while Agricultural land and Forest Land decreased by −13.41% and −5.42% respectively. The water quality index ranged from 43.04 to 110.40 in 2006 and from 170 to 430 in 2017 indicating a deterioration in the quality of surface water from good to unsuitable for drinking at all the sampled sites. Built-up/bare lands exhibited a significant positive correlation with EC (R2 = 0.61, p ≤ 0.05), turbidity (R2 = 0.69, p ≤ 0.05), TDS (R2 = 0.61, p ≤ 0.05), Cl (R2 = 0.62, p ≤ 0.05) and a significant negative correlation with NH4 (R2 = −0.729, p ≤ 0.05).
