Comparison of FDA safety and efficacy data for KAMRA and Raindrop corneal inlays

Optimization of the Deposition Rate of Tungsten Inert Gas Mild Steel Using Response Surface Methodology

In welding, so many factors contribute to good quality welds. The deposition rate is the rate of weld metal deposit at fusion zone during welding, which also is a key factors affecting the quality of welded joints. Too high or low deposition rate compromises the integrity of weld. This study was carried out with the aim of providing an approach for producing better weldments by optimizing and predicting deposition rate of low carbon steel using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). 30 sets of experiments were done, adopting the central composite experimental design. The tungsten inert gas welding equipment was used to produce the welded joints. Argon gas was supplied to the welding process to shield the weld from atmospheric interference. Mild steel coupons measuring 60 × 40 × 10 mm was used for the experiments. The results obtained show that the voltage and current have very strong influence on the deposition rate. The models developed possess a variance inflation factor of 1. And P-value is less than 0.05, indicating that the model is significant. The models also possessed a high goodness of fit with R2 (Coefficient of determination) values of 91%. The model produced numerically obtained optimal solution of current of 160.00 Amp, voltage of 20 volts and a gas flow rate of 17 L/min produces a welded material having deposition rate of 0.4637 kg/hr. This solution was selected by design expert as the optimal solution with a desirability value of 98.8%. A weld simulation using the optimum value obtained produced a weld with good quality.

Identifying mechanisms and pathways involved in gene–environment interplay and phenotypic plasticity is a long-standing *** is highly desirable to establish an integrated framework with an environmental dimension for complex trait dissection and prediction.A critical step is to identify an environmental index that is both biologically relevant and estimable for new *** extensive field-observed complex traits,environmental profiles,and genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms for three major crops(maize,wheat,and oat),we demonstrated that identifying such an environmental index(i.e.,a combination of environmental parameter and growth window)enables genome-wide association studies and genomic selection of complex traits to be conducted with an explicit environmental ***,genes identified for two reaction-norm parameters(i.e.,intercept and slope)derived from flowering time values along the environmental index were less colocalized for a diverse maize panel than for wheat and oat breeding panels,agreeing with the different diversity levels and genetic constitutions of the *** addition,we showcased the usefulness of this framework for systematically forecasting the performance of diverse germplasm panels in new *** general framework and the companion CERIS-JGRA analytical package should facilitate biologically informed dissection of complex traits,enhanced performance prediction in breeding for future climates,and coordinated efforts to enrich our understanding of mechanisms underlying phenotypic variation.

Early stent thrombosis secondary to food allergic reaction:Kounis syndrome following rice pudding ingestion

Kounis syndrome is the concurrence of coronary spasm, acute myocardial infarction or stent thrombosis, with allergic reactions in the setting of mast-cell and platelet activation. In this report Kounis syndrome manifesting as stent thrombosis with left ventricular thrombus formation was triggered by a food-induced allergic reaction. The allergic reaction to food was confirmed by oral rice pudding ingredients challenge test while skin tests were inconclusive. To our knowledge, this is first report of early stent thrombosis secondary to food allergic reaction in a 70-year-old man patient who was found to have left ventricular thrombus and undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Extraterrestrial Impacts and Geomagnetic Reversals

The existing data on the confirmed extraterrestrial impacts and geomagnetic reversals are examined. Differential rotation of the inner core of the Earth relative to the rest of the planet has been observed through seismic records. Differential rotation between the inner and outer core is thought to be related to the geomagnetic field of the Earth. Extraterrestrial impacts with the surface of the Earth have been shown to cause changes in this differential rotation. It is shown in this paper that there is a strong correlation between the dates of major impacts and geomagnetic reversals. This strongly supports the possibility of major extraterrestrial impacts being one of the causes of geomagnetic reversals as has been suggested previously.

Assessment of Municipal Organic Solid Waste, as a Potential Feedstock for Briquette Production in Kampala, Uganda

The current shortage of energy resources coupled with environmental degradation problems resulting from deforestation in Uganda has contributed to increased demand for renewable energy resources including municipal organic solid waste and agricultural residues. However, organic waste from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) may contain contaminants that are harmful to public health and the environment. This study determined the heavy metal concentration in MSW in Kampala City, Uganda. Also, the physicochemical properties of briquettes produced from the MSW were compared with charcoal. The waste samples were collected from residential, institutional and market areas over a period of two weeks. They were then analyzed for the presence of heavy metals. Briquettes were made from the bio-waste and were subjected to calorific and proximate analysis. Results indicated that the mean concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, and Pb were 1.25 mg/kg, 2.04 mg/kg, 38.2 mg/kg, 3.97 mg/kg and 1.99 mg/kg respectively while Hg was not detected. The calorific values of briquettes ranged from 8.9 to 15.3 MJ/kg and were lower than those of charcoal. Heavy metal concentrations in bio-waste collected were below the permissible acceptable limits. These findings indicate that the sampled MSW does not pose a health hazard arising from the presence of such heavy metals and therefore could be a safe source of renewable energy.

Bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance (BLIS) activity of Streptococcus macedonicus MBF10-2 and its synergistic action in combination with antibiotics

Objective: To characterize the bacteriocin-like inhibitory-substances(BLIS) activity of Streptococcus macedonicus MBF10-2 [named BLIS(MBF10-2)], a bacteriocinogenic strain isolated from an Indonesian tofu ***: BLIS(MBF10-2) was obtained by culturing the bacterium, and standard deferred antagonism assays were used to demonstrate its activity. The antibacterial testing of fractions collected by filtration using 3–30 kDa cut-off membrane sizes were carried out by performing well diffusion ***: The growth of Micrococcus luteus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Lactococcus lactis,Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Weissella confusa were inhibited by BLIS(MBF10-2).Interestingly, BLIS-containing fractions obtained from sequential application on ultrafiltration membranes indicated that this bacterium Streptococcus macedonicus MBF10-2 could produces at least two antimicrobial peptides activities, one of which is likely to be a lantibiotic peptide. Potential synergistic activity against certain Gram-positive(but not Gram-negative) species when partnered with antibiotics(ampicillin, tetracycline or kanamycin) were ***: Combination of some BLIS(MBF10-2) active fractions with antibiotics(ampicillin, tetracycline or kanamycin) could demonstrate synergistic activities against certain Gram-positive species.
