Most topological insulators(TIs)discovered today in spinful systems can be transformed from topological semimetals(TSMs)with vanishing bulk gap via introducing the spin-orbit coupling(SOC),which manifests the intrinsic links between the gapped topological insulator phases and the gapless ***,we have discovered a family of TSMs in time-reversal invariant spinless systems,which host butterfly-like nodal-lines(Nls)consisting of a pair of identical concentric intersecting coplanar ellipses(CICE).In this Communication,we unveil the intrinsic link between this exotic class of nodal-line semimetals(NlSMs)and a Z_(4)=2 topological crystalline insulator(TCI),by including substantial *** demonstrate that in three space groups(i.e.,Pbam(No.55),P4/mbm(No.127),and P4_(2)/mbc(No.135)),the TCI supports a fourfold Dirac fermion on the(001)surface protected by two glide symmetries,which originates from the intertwined drumhead surface states of the CICE *** higher order topology is further demonstrated by the emergence of one-dimensional helical hinge states,indicating the discovery of a higher order topological insulator protected by a glide symmetry.

Cancer cachexia(CC)is a devastating syndrome characterized by weight loss,reduced fat mass and muscle mass that affects approximately 80%of cancer patients and is responsible for 22%-30%of cancer-associated *** underlying mechanisms for the development of CC are crucial to advance therapies to treat CC and improve cancer *** is a multi-organ syndrome that results in extensive skeletal muscle and adipose tissue wasting;however,CC can impair other organs such as the liver,heart,brain,and bone as well.A considerable amount of CC research focuses on changes that occur within the muscle,but cancer-related impairments in other organ systems are ***,metabolic changes in organ systems other than muscle may contribute to ***,the purpose of this review is to address degenerative mechanisms which occur during CC from a whole-body *** the information known about metabolic changes that occur in response to cancer is necessary to develop and enhance therapies to treat *** much of the current evidences in CC are from pre-clinical models we should note the majority of the data reviewed here are from preclinical models.

Characterisation and risk assessment of venous thromboembolism in gastrointestinal cancers

AIM To characterise venous thromboembolism(VTE) in gastrointestinal cancer and assess the clinical utility of risk stratification scoring. METHODS We performed a retrospective analysis using electronic patient records of 910 gastro-oesophageal(GO) cancer and 1299 colorectal cancer(CRC) patients referred to a tertiary cancer centre to identify the incidence of VTE, its relationship to chemotherapy and impact on *** risk scores were calculated using the Khorana index. Patients were classified as low risk(0 points), intermediate risk(1 to 2 points) or high risk(3 points). Data was analysed to determine the sensitivity of the Khorana score to predict VTE. RESUlTS The incidence of VTE was 8.9% for CRC patients and 9.7% for GO cancer patients. Pulmonary emboli(PE) were more common in advanced than in localised CRC(50% vs 21% of events respectively) and lower limb deep vein thrombosis(DVT) were more common in localised than in advanced CRC(62% vs 39% of events respectively). The median time to VTE from cancer diagnosis was 8.3 mo for CRC patients compared to 6.7 mo in GO cancer. In localised CRC median time to VTE was 7.1 mo compared with 10.1 mo in advanced CRC. In contrast in GO cancer, the median time to VTE was 12.5 mo in localised disease and 6.8 mo in advanced disease. No survival difference was seen between patients with and without VTE in this cohort. The majority of patients with CRC in whom VTE was diagnosed had low or intermediate Khorana risk score(94% for localised and 97% in advanced CRC). In GO cancer, all patients scored either intermediate or high risk due to the primary site demonstrating a limitation of the risk assessment score in discriminating high and low risk patients with GO cancers. Additional risk factors were identified in this cohort including surgery, chemotherapy or hospital admission. Overall, 81% of patients with CRC and 77% of patients with GO cancer had one or more of these factors within 4 wk prior to diagnosis VTE. These should

Plasma treatment constitutes an efficient method for chemical-free disinfection.A spray-based system for dispensing plasma-activated aerosols onto surfaces would facilitate disinfection of complex and/or hidden surfaces inaccessible to direct line-of-sight(for example,UV)*** complexity and size of current plasma generators(for example,plasma jet and cometary plasma systems)-which prohibit portable operation,together with the short plasma lifetimes,necessitate a miniaturized in situ technique in which a source can be simultaneously activated and administered on-demand onto ***,we demonstrate this possibility by combining two nanoscale technologies for plasma and aerosol generation into an integrated device that is sufficiently small and *** is generated on a carpet of zinc oxide nanorods comprising a nanoneedle ensemble,which when raised to a high electric potential,constitutes a massive point charge array with near-singular electric fields to effect atmospheric *** plasma is then used to activate water transported through an underlying capillary wick,that is subsequently aerosolized under MHz-order surface acoustic *** show that the system,besides being amenable to miniaturization and hence integration into a chipscale device,leads to a considerable improvement in plasma-activation over its macroscale cometary discharge predecessor,with up to 20%and 127%higher hydrogen peroxide and nitrite ion concentrations that are respectively generated in the plasma-activated ***,in turn,leads to a 67%reduction in the disinfection time to achieve 95%bacterial load reduction,therefore demonstrating the potential of the technology as an efficient portable platform for on-demand field-use surface disinfection.

Amino acids(AAs) are prevalent in source water, particularly during spring run-off. Monitoring of amino acids in source water is desirable for water treatment plants(WTP) to indicate changes in source water quality. The objective of this study was to establish analytical procedures for reliable monitoring of amino acids in source water. Therefore, we examined two different methods, large volume inject(lVI) and solid phase extraction(SPE), for sample preparation prior to HIlIC-MS/MS. The lVI-HIlIC-MS/MS method can provide fast and sensitive detection for clean samples, but suffers from matrix effects, resulting in irreproducible separation and shortening column lifetime. We have demonstrated that SPE was necessary prior to HIlIC-MS/MS to achieve reproducible and reliable quantification of AAs in source water. A natural heterocyclic amine 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline-3-carboxylic acid(MTCCA) was also included in the method to indicate changes in other natural nitrogenous compounds in source water. The SPE-HIlIC-MS/MS method was able to achieve limits of detection from 2.6-3400 ng/l for the amino acids and MTCCA with RSDs( n = 3) of 1.1%-4.8%. As well, retention times(RT) of the analytes were reproducible with variation less than 0.01 min( n = 3) through the entire project. We further applied the SPE-HIlICMS/MS method to determine AAs in authentic source water samples collected from two drinking water treatment plants(WTPs) during the 2021 spring run-off season. The results support that the SPE-HIlIC-MS/MS method does not require derivatization and can provide reliable, accurate, and robust analysis of AAs and MTCCA in source water, supporting future monitoring of source water quality.

In this paper,we present an application of distributed fiber optic sensor(DFOS)technology to measure the strain of a continuous flight auger(CFA)test pile with a central reinforcement bar bundle,during a static load test carried out in *** distributed in nature,DFOS gives much more information about the pile performance as compared to traditional point sensors,such as identifying cross-sectional irregularities or other *** strain profiles recorded along the depth of the piles from the DFOS were used to calculate pile deformation(contraction),shaft friction,and tip resistance under various *** on this pile load test,a finite element(FE)analysis was performed using a one-dimensional nonlinear load-transfer *** by the shaft friction and tip resistance derived from the monitored data,the FE model was able to simulate the pile and soil performance during the load testing with good *** effect of the reinforcement cage and central reinforcement bar bundle were investigated,and it was found that the addition of a reinforcement cage would reduce the pile settlement by up to 20%.

Anthropogenic Influence on Decadal Changes in Concurrent Hot and Dry Events over China around the Mid-1990s

The frequency and duration of observed concurrent hot and dry events(HDEs) over China during the growing season(April–September) exhibit significant decadal changes across the mid-1990s. These changes are characterized by increases in HDE frequency and duration over most of China, with relatively large increases over southeastern China(SEC), northern China(NC), and northeastern China(NEC). The frequency of HDEs averaged over China in the present day(PD,1994–2011) is double that in the early period(EP, 1964–81);the duration of HDEs increases by 60%. Climate experiments with the Met Office Unified Model(MetUM-GOMl2) are used to estimate the contributions of anthropogenic forcing to HDE decadal changes over China. Anthropogenic forcing changes can explain 60%–70% of the observed decadal changes,suggesting an important anthropogenic influence on HDE changes over China across the mid-1990s. Single-forcing experiments indicate that the increase in greenhouse gas(GHG) concentrations dominates the simulated decadal changes,increasing the frequency and duration of HDEs throughout China. The change in anthropogenic aerosol(AA) emissions significantly decreases the frequency and duration of HDEs over SEC and NC, but the magnitude of the decrease is much smaller than the increase induced by GHGs. The changes in HDEs in response to anthropogenic forcing are mainly due to the response of climatological mean surface air temperatures. The contributions from changes in variability and changes in climatological mean soil moisture and evapotranspiration are relatively small. The physical processes associated with the response of HDEs to GHG and AA changes are also revealed.
