Kounis syndrome seems to be not a rare disease but a rarely diagnosed disorder. Multiple causes can join forc-es and trigger the development of this syndrome. We report the first case of Kounis syndrome manifesting as myocardial infarction with cardiovascular collapse that occurred in the dialysis room following an allergic reac-tion. The dialysis apparatus material of polyurethane, polyamide, polycarbonate, silicon rubber and polypro-pylene were incriminated causes. Physicians should be aware of the causality and existence of this disorder in order to achieve early and correct diagnosis and apply the appropriate therapeutic measures.

Oxygen, the terminal electron acceptor for mitochondrial electron transport, is vital for plants because of its role in the production of ATP by oxidative phosphorylation. While photosynthetic oxygen production contributes to the oxygen supply in leaves, reducing the risk of oxygen limitation of mitochondrial metabolism under most conditions, root tissues often suffer oxygen deprivation during normal development due to the lack of an endogenous supply and isolation from atmospheric oxygen.

The Effectiveness of Model Rocketry to Teach Science and Quantitative Content to Students in a Non-Science Majors Course at the College Level: An Example from a Planetary geology Course

Engaging non-science majors in a college-level science course can prove challenging. In turn, this can make it difficult to effectively teach science and math content. However, topics related to planetary exploration have a unique way of capturing one’s imagination and may serve to robustly engage non-science majors. In this contribution, I 1) describe a model rocketry lab module,?I have created and implemented into an introductory-level planetary geology course and 2) quantify student learning gains as a result of this module. This module builds on model rocketry lesson plans for science and math coursework at the K-12 level (e.g., [1]?[2])?and involves students working in groups to 1) design and build model rockets to carry out a theoretical mission that addresses a science question the students have developed, 2) launch their rockets and collect related data, 3) synthesize and evaluate their data, and 4) report their results in both oral and written forms. The tasks of building and launching the model rocket serve as a vehicle that allows students to employ the scientific process while learning about planetary mission design and applying geologic and quantitative skills useful to answering a science-related question. Quantification of student learning gains shows that through this lab module, students significantly improved their quantitative and scientific reasoning skills. Results from student questionnaires showed a significant increase in student interest and confidence in addressing scientific questions as well as an understanding of how planetary missions are designed and conducted.

Kounis syndrome is the concurrence of coronary spasm, acute myocardial infarction or stent thrombosis, with allergic reactions in the setting of mast-cell and platelet activation. In this report Kounis syndrome manifesting as stent thrombosis with left ventricular thrombus formation was triggered by a food-induced allergic reaction. The allergic reaction to food was confirmed by oral rice pudding ingredients challenge test while skin tests were inconclusive. To our knowledge, this is first report of early stent thrombosis secondary to food allergic reaction in a 70-year-old man patient who was found to have left ventricular thrombus and undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

可再生生物质资源的开发与利用能够缓解化石燃料产生的温室气体对环境的负面影响.在生物质燃料制备过程中联产高附加值化学品能大幅提高生物质炼制的经济性.愈创木酚是常见的木质纤维素快速热解产物.本文研究了低温液相氧化愈创木酚制备马来酸,并重点考察了催化剂添加量、pH值、反应时间和反应温度等反应条件的影响.研究发现,在钛硅沸石-过氧化氢碱溶液氧化反应体系中(80℃,pH=13.3),20_30mol%的愈创木酚可以选择性转化为马来酸.同时初步探讨了愈创木酚氧化开环转化为马来酸的反应机理.

Water contamination by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,such as acetaminophen,is an emerging ecological *** this study,a newthree-dimensionalmanganese dioxideengrafted reduced graphene oxide(3D MnO_(2)/rgO)hybrid aerogel was developed for acetaminophen *** synthesis involved firstly the self-assembly of gO aerogel,followed by thermal reduction and in-situ MnO_(2) growth by *** aerogel demonstrated interlinked planes with smooth surfaces deposited with MnO_(2) nanospheres and pores of 138.4–235.3μm *** influences of adsorbent dosage,initial pH,acetaminophen concentration,temperature and contact time were *** was determined that the adsorption of acetaminophen occurred on uniform sorption sites in the aerogel,as suggested by the best fit of data to the Langmuir isotherm,yielding a maximum adsorption capacity of 252.87 mg/*** highest adsorption performance of the 3D MnO_(2)/rgO aerogel was attained at a dosage of 0.6 g/L,initial pH of 6.2 and temperature of 40℃.The process kinetics were in-line with the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics at 10 and 20–500 mg/L concentrations,*** assay showed the spontaneity and endothermicity features of the 3D MnO_(2)/rgO-acetaminophen *** acetaminophen adsorption mechanisms were mainly hydrogen bonding and pore ***,the as-synthesised aerogel was effectively regenerated using acetone and re-utilised in four adsorption-desorption ***,the results highly recommend the implementation of the 3D MnO_(2)/rgO hybrid aerogel for purification of wastewater polluted by acetaminophen residue.

Environmental sampling of volatile organic compounds during the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California

Trace analysis of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) during wildfires is imperative for environmental and health risk assessment. The use of gas sampling devices mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) to chemically sample air during wildfires is of great interest because these devices move freely about their environment, allowing for more representative air samples and the ability to sample areas dangerous or unreachable by humans. This work presents chemical data from air samples obtained in Davis, CA during the most destructive wildfire in California's history-the 2018 Camp Fire – as well as the deployment of our sampling device during a controlled experimental fire while fixed to a UAV. The sampling mechanism was an in-house manufactured micro-gas preconcentrator(μPC) embedded onto a compact battery-operated sampler that was returned to the laboratory for chemical analysis. Compounds commonly observed in wildfires were detected during the Camp Fire using gas chromatography mass spectrometry(gC–MS), including BTEX(benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m + p-xylene, and o-xylene), benzaldehyde, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, naphthalene, 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene and 1-ethyl-3-methylbenzene. Concentrations of BTEX were calculated and we observed that benzene and toluene were highest with average concentrations of 4.7 and 15.1 μg/m^(3), respectively. Numerous fire-related compounds including BTEX and aldehydes such as octanal and nonanal were detected upon experimental fire ignition, even at a much smaller sampling time compared to samples taken during the Camp Fire. Analysis of the air samples taken both stationary during the Camp Fire and mobile during an experimental fire show the successful operation of our sampler in a fire environment.

AIM: To evaluate the prognostic significance of p27kip1 in colorectal cancer patients. METHODS: Cytoplasmic and nuclear p27kip1 expression was evaluated in 418 colorectal cancers using tissue microarrays. Data were associated with known patient and tumor variables and long-term patient outcomes, providing further insight into the mechanisms by which p27kip1 may influence tumor development. RESULTS: Nuclear and cytoplasmic p27Kip1 expressions were detected in 59% and 19% of tumors respectively. Cytoplasmic p27Kip1 was almost invariably associated with positive nuclear p27Kip1 expression. Neither case correlat- ed with known clinical or pathological variables, includ- ing tumor stage, grade or extramural vascular invasion. Furthermore, nuclear p27kip1 expression had no impact on survival. However, we identified a significant correla- tion between expression of cytoplasmic p27kip1 and longer disease-specific survival times. On multivariate analysis, TNM stage and extramural vascular invasion were highly significant independent prognostic factors, with positive cytoplasmic p27 expression showing a trend towards im- proved patient survival (P = 0.059).CONCLUSION: These findings support the recent evi- dence that cytoplasmic p27kip1 has a distinct and impor- tant biological role that can influence tumor outcome.
