Ultrasmall Au nanoclusters have been proven to effectively enhance the catalytic performance of NiFe layered double hydroxides(NiFe-LDHs)toward oxygen evolution reaction(OER),yet the surface ligand effect of the Au nanoclusters still remains ***,a systematic study is reported to examine the OER performance of NiFe-LDHs supported atom-precise all alkynyl-protected[Au_(28)(~tBuc≡c)17]~-nanoclusters(Au_(28)-Alkynyl in short)and thiolate-protected Au_(28)(TBBT)_(20)(TBBT=4-tert-butylbenzene thiol)counterp arts(Au_(28)-Thiolate in short).The Au_(28)-Alkynyl cluster has characteristic absorbance feature,and its composition is verified by mass *** possesses a drastically different structure from the reported mixed ligand protected Au_(28)***,the NiFe-LDHs loaded with Au_(28)-Alkynyl exhibited a superior OER performance than the sample loaded with Au28-Thiolate under the same conditions,evidenced by a smaller overpotential of 205 mV at the current density of 10 mA·cm^(-2)and a lower Tafel slope value of 41.0 mV·dec^(-1)in 1 mol·L^(-1)*** excellent performance is attributed to the interfaces created between the NiFe-LDHs and the Au nanoclusters,as density functional theory calculations reveal that more significant charge transfer occurs in Au_(28)-Alkynyl/NiFeLDHs catalyst,and more importantly,the energy barrier of the potential-determining step in the OER process for Au28-Alkynyl/NiFe-LDHs is much lower than that of Au28-Thiolate/NiFe-LDHs hence favors the electrocatalytic reaction.

Influence of laser polarization on collective electron dynamics in ultraintense laser-foil interactions

The collective response of electrons in an ultrathin foil target irradiated by an ultraintense(~6×10^(20)W cm^(-2)) laser pulse is investigated experimentally and via 3D particle-in-cell simulations. It is shown that if the target is sufficiently thin that the laser induces significant radiation pressure, but not thin enough to become relativistically transparent to the laser light, the resulting relativistic electron beam is elliptical, with the major axis of the ellipse directed along the laser polarization axis. When the target thickness is decreased such that it becomes relativistically transparent early in the interaction with the laser pulse, diffraction of the transmitted laser light occurs through a so called ‘relativistic plasma aperture', inducing structure in the spatial-intensity profile of the beam of energetic electrons. It is shown that the electron beam profile can be modified by variation of the target thickness and degree of ellipticity in the laser polarization.

Hepatitis c virus core protein triggers expansion and activation of cD4＋cD25＋ regulatory T cells in chronic hepatitis c patients

cD4＋cD25＋FoxP3 ＋ regulatory T ceils （Tregs） are increased in patients with chronic hepatitis c, which may contribute to the sustained suppression of hepatitis c virus （HcV）-specific T-cell responses and viral persistence in HcV-infected individuals. We postulated that HcV core protein （HcVc） directly contributes to the expansion of Tregs in HcV-infected patients, and we provide evidence to support this hypothesis in the report. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells （PBMcs） and sera were collected from 87 treatment-naive chronic HcV-infected patients, cD4＋cD25＋ Tregs were measured by flow cytometry, and HcV RNA and HcVc levels were detected using qPcR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA）, respectively. cD4＋, cD8＋, cD4＋cD25＋ and cD4＋cD25- T cells were purified from healthy donors and cultured with recombinant HcVc and Toll-like receptor （TLR） ligands. Flow cytometry was used to analyze cell proliferation, and ELISA was performed to measure cytokine production. In the 87 chronic HcV-infected patients, HcVc showed a significant correlation with HcV RNA and cD4＋cD25＋Tregs. Mechanistic studies showed that HcVc, together with anti-cD3 antibody, augmented cD4＋cD25＋ Treg proliferation, but inhibited cD4＋cD25- T-cell proliferation and IFN-γ production, in a dose-dependent and Treg-dependent manner. Moreover, unlike the TLR3 ligand （poly hc） and the TLR4 ligand （lipopolysaccharide, LPS）, the TLR2 ligand （lipoteichoic acid, LTA） and HcVc both inhibited TcR-induced cD4＋ T-cell proliferation and IFN-γ secretion in a Treg-dependent manner. These data indicate that HcVc, like other TLR2 ligands, triggers cD4＋cD25＋ Treg activation and expansion to inhibit host immune responses, which may play a critical role in viral persistence in HcV-infected patients.

Zebrafish as an in Vivo Screen for Early Black cranberry Proanthocyanidin Biomolecular Activity

Antioxidants have been widely studied in various naturally occurring substances as a bioavailable cancer prevention treatment. Proanthocyanidins (PAcs), which are abundant polyphenols in Early Black (EB) cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), are readily available and we have shown their anticancer activity in several cancer cell lines. This work focused on the activity of these compounds when incorporated into the zebrafish (Danio rerio) system. We began investigating the in vivo effect of these phytochemicals, the protective role of several other cranberry compounds, and the metabolic activity of the vertebrate model organism. Proanthocyanidin fractions were separated from fresh EB cranberry fruit by chromatography on Sephadex LH-20 in order to acquire a workable stock solution in DMSO. Various concentrations of proanthocyanidins in solution were tested against fish ranging in age from 1-cell stage to adult level of growth. Acridine orange apoptosis indicator dye was incorporated into the treatment protocol, and it was observed that irregular epithelial cell death was occurring in treated embryos but not in the control group. Further apoptosis assays were carried out utilizing Dihydroethidium (DHE) superoxide sensitive dye in the treatment protocol. Fluorescing red nuclei were visible along the outer surface of the epithelium cell layer;an indication of superoxide release within cells leading to the nicking of DNA within the nucleus. It was also possible to screen for superoxide release in PAcs treated ccD-cO18 and HT-29 cells using confocal microscopy and cell apoptosis was investigated by trypan blue cytotoxicity assay;cell apoptosis results were statistically significant as confirmed by ANOVA analysis. Results indicate that the phytochemicals may induce apoptosis in rapidly dividing cells.

Generation and Analysis of Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Transmission Shift Schedules with a Torque Split Algorithm

The increased concern over global climate change and lack of long-term sustainability of fossil fuels in the projected future has prompted further research into advanced alternative fuel vehicles to reduce vehicle emissions and fuel consumption. One of the primary advanced vehicle research areas involves electrification and hybridization of vehicles. As hybrid-electric vehicle technology has advanced, so has the need for more innovative control schemes for hybrid vehicles, including the development and optimization of hybrid powertrain transmission shift schedules. The hybrid shift schedule works in tandem with a cost function-based torque split algorithm that dynamically determines the optimal torque command for the electric motor and engine. The focus of this work is to develop and analyze the benefits and limitations of two different shift schedules for a position-3 (P3) parallel hybrid-electric vehicle. a traditional two-parameter shift schedule that operates as a function of vehicle accelerator position and vehicle speed (state of charge (SOc) independent shift schedule), and a three-parameter shift schedule that also adapts to fluctuations in the state of charge of the high voltage batteries (SOc dependent shift schedule). The shift schedules were generated using an exhaustive search coupled with a fitness function to evaluate all possible vehicle operating points. The generated shift schedules were then tested in the software-in-the-loop (SIL) environment and the vehicle-in-the-loop (VIL) environment and compared to each other, as well as to the stock 8L45 8-speed transmission shift schedule. The results show that both generated shift schedules improved upon the stock transmission shift schedule used in the hybrid powertrain comparing component efficiency, vehicle efficiency, engine fuel economy, and vehicle fuel economy.

Investigational growth factors utilized in animal models of spinal fusion: Systematic review

BAcKGROUND Over 400000 Americans annually undergo spinal fusion surgeries, yet up to 40%of these procedures result in pseudoarthrosis even with iliac crest autograft, the current "gold standard" treatment. Tissue engineering has the potential to solve this problem via the creation of bone grafts involving bone-promoting growth factors(e.g., bone morphogenetic protein 2). A broad assessment of experimental growth factors is important to inform future work and clinical potential in this area. To date, however, no study has systematically reviewed the investigational growth factors utilized in preclinical animal models of spinal *** To review all published studies assessing investigational growth factors for spinal fusion in animal models and identify promising agents for *** We conducted a systematic review of the literature using PubMed, Embase,cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases with searches run on May 29 th,2018. The search query was designed to include all non-human, preclinical animal models of spinal fusion reported in the literature without a timespan limit. Extracted data for each model included surgical approach, level of fusion,animal species and breed, animal age and sex, and any other relevant characteristics.
