Gracilaria changii(Rhodophyta) alleviates bisphenol A-induced adverse reproductive abnormalities in mice

Objective:to evaluate the potential of Gracilaria changii extract in ameliorating the potential adverse effects of bisphenol ***:the antioxidant capacity of Gracilaria changii extracted using different solvents(methanol,ethanol,and aqueous)was *** mice were administered by oral gavage with bisphenol A(60 mg/kg body weight)for 6 weeks with or without Gracilaria changii aqueous ***,the mice were either euthanized for histology and immunohistochemistry studies or mated to evaluate the pregnancy ***:Gracilaria changii aqueous extract showed the highest antioxidant properties compared with extract using methanol and *** aqueous extract of Gracilaria changii improved the uterus index and uterine lipid peroxidation after bisphenol A exposure,although the uterine expressions of estrogen receptors and complement C3 were not *** evaluation of the uterus during the estrus stage has revealed that the extract could mitigate bisphenol A-induced adverse effects in the uterus as there was a lower percentage of mice showing abnormalities like decreased eosin staining in the myometrium,and decrease in the number of eosinophil and endometrial glands in the ***,Gracilaria changii aqueous extract improved the pregnancy rate of mice administered with bisphenol ***:Gracilaria changii extract protects against bisphenol A-induced female reproductive abnormalities in mice which may be mediated via modulation of eosinophil migration,endometrial gland formation,and protein expressions associated with prostaglandins in the myometrium.

this paper uses a finite dominating set （FDS） to investigate the multi-facility ordered median problem （OMP） in a strongly connected directed network. the authors first prove that the multi-facility OMP has an FDS in the node set, which not only generalizes the FDS result provided by Kalcsics, et al. （2002）, but also extends the FDS result from the single-facility Case to the multiple case, filling an important gap. then, based on this FDS result, the authors develop an exact algorithm to solve the problem. However, if the number of facilities is large, it is not practical to find the optimal solution, because the multi-facility OMP in directed networks is NP-hard. Hence, we present a constant-approximation algorithm for the p-median problem in directed networks. Finally, we pose an open problem for future research.

A kinetic model for a single step biodiesel production from a high free fatty acid (FFA) biodiesel feedstock over a solid heteropolyacid catalyst

Production of biodiesel from yellow grease(waste cooking oil and waste animal fats) is fast emerging as a promising alternative to address the twin challenges before the biodiesel industry today-fluctuation in prices of vegetable oil and the food versus fuel debate. Yellow grease has a high percentage of free fatty acids(FFA) and proves to be an unsuitable feedstock for biodiesel production from commercially viable alkalicatalyzed production systems due to saponification problems.'Green' methodologies based on heterogeneous solid acid catalyzed reactions have the potential to simultaneously promote esterification and transesterification reactions of yellow grease to produce biodiesel without soap formation and offer easy catalyst separation without generation of toxic streams. this paper presents kinetic studies for the conversion of model yellow grease feeds to biodiesel using a heteropolyacid supported on alumina(HSiW/Al2O3) using a batch autoclave. three model yellow grease feeds were prepared using canola oil with added FFA such as palmitic, oleic and linoleic acid. A pseudo homogeneous kinetic model for the parallel esterification and transesterification was developed. the rate constants and activation parameters for esterification and transesterification reactions for the model yellow grease feeds were determined. the rate constants for esterification are higher than the transesterification rate constants. the kinetic model was validated using the experimental biodiesel data obtained from processing a commercial yellow grease feed. the kinetic model could be used to design novel processes to convert various low-value waste oils, fats and non-food grade oils to sustainable biodiesel.

A new green process for biodiesel production from waste oils via catalytic distillation using a solid acid catalyst-Modeling, economic and environmental analysis

the challenges in the chemical processing industry today are environmental concerns, energy and capital costs. Catalytic distillation(CD) is a green reactor technology which combines a catalytic reaction and separation via distillation in the same distillation column. Utilization of CD in chemical process development could result in capital and energy savings, and the reduction of greenhouse gases. the efficacy of CD and the economic merits, in terms of energy and equipment savings, brought by CD for the production of biodiesel from waste oil such as yellow grease is quantified. Process flow sheets for industrial routes for an annual production of 10 million gallon AStM purity biodiesel in a conventional process(reactor followed by distillation) and CD configurations are modeled in Aspen Plus. Material and energy flows, as well as sized unit operation blocks, are used to conduct an economic assessment of each process. total capital investment, total operating and utility costs are calculated for each process. the waste oil feedstock is yellow grease containing both triglyceride and free fatty acid. Both transesterification and esterification reactions are considered in the process simulations. Results show a significant advantage of CD compared to a conventional biodiesel processes due to the reduction of distillation columns, waste streams and greenhouse gas emissions. the significant savings in capital and energy costs together with the reduction of greenhouse gases demonstrate that process intensification via CD is a feasible and new green process for the biodiesel production from waste oils.

Update on the Fungal Biofilm Drug Resistance and Its Alternative treatment

Candida albicans (C. albicans) and Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) are the two main pathogens in the clinical setting to cause serious, sometimes, lethal fungal infections. Immunocompromised patients fall victims to these fungi, with a mortality rate rising drastically over the past decades. this is in correlation with the fact that conventional antifungals are no longer capable of completely eradicating the disease, or if so, high doses are usually required to do so, leading to eventual resistance to those drugs and severe side effects. High drug resistance is in association with the discovery that these opportunistic pathogens have the ability to develop a multicellular complex, known as biofilm. Biofilms prevent drugs from reaching the fungal cells by sequestering them in their extracellular matrix. Other factors such as extracellular DNA, persister cells or heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) also play a role in biofilm and contribute to drug recalcitrance. With the discovery of new antifungals lagging behind, scientists focused on other more profitable ways to counteract this phenomenon. Combination of two or more antifungals was found effective but came with serious drawbacks. Natural plant extracts, such as traditional Chinese medicine have also been demonstrated in vitro to possess antimicrobial actions. Great interest was directed towards their use with conventional antifungal agents with a possibility of lowering the necessary concentration required to inhibit the growth of fungi. this review aims in understanding the different factors contributing to clinical drug resistance and evaluating the effect of combination therapy and natural products on those cases difficult to treat.

the impact of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), child-turcotte-pugh (CtP) score and disease staging on the survival of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients: a retrospective cohort from single oncology center

Background:Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common cause of cancer-related death in Saudi Arabia. Our study aimed to investigate the patterns of HCC and the effect of tNM staging, Alfa-fetoprotein (AFP), and Child-turcotte Pugh (CtP) on patients' overall survival (OS).Methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted on 43 HCC patients at a single oncology center in Saudi Arabia from 2015 to 2020. All patients had to fulfill one of the following criteria: (a) a liver lesion reported as definitive HCC on dynamic imaging and/or (b) a biopsy-confirmed diagnosis.Results:the mean patient age of all HCC cases was 66.8 with a male-to-female ratio of 3.3:1. All patients were stratified into two groups: viral HCC (n = 22, 51%) and non-viral HCC (n = 21, 49%). Among viral-HCC patients, 55% were due to HBV and 45% due to HCV. Cirrhosis was diagnosed in 79% of cases. Age and sex did not significantly statistically differ in OS among viral and non-viral HCC patients (-value > 0.05). About 65% of patients had tumor size >5 cm during the diagnosis, with a significant statistical difference in OS (-value = 0.027). AFP was >400 ng/ml in 45% of the patients. there was a statistically significant difference in the OS in terms of AFP levels (-value = 0.021). A statistically significant difference was also observed between the CtP score and OS (-value = 0.02). CtP class B had the longest survival. BSC was the most common treatment provided to HCC patients followed by sorafenib therapy. there was a significant statistical difference in OS among viral and non-viral HCC patients (-value = 0.008).Conclusions:the most common predictors for OS were the underlying cause of HCC, AFP, and tumor size. Being having non-viral etiology, a tumor size >5 cm, an AFP > 400 ng/mL, and a CtP score class C were all negatively associated with OS.

this paper presents a 591×438-DPI ultrasonic fingerprint *** sensor is based on a piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer(PMUt)array that is bonded at wafer-level to complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS)signal processing electronics to produce a pulse-echo ultrasonic imager on a *** meet the 500-DPI standard for consumer fingerprint sensors,the PMUt pitch was reduced by approximately a factor of two relative to an earlier *** conducted a systematic design study of the individual PMUt and array to achieve this scaling while maintaining a high *** resulting 110×56-PMUt array,composed of 30×43-μm^(2) rectangular PMUts,achieved a 51.7% fill-factor,three times greater than that of the previous *** with the custom CMOS ASIC,the sensor achieves 2 mV kPa^(−1) sensitivity,15 kPa pressure output,75μm lateral resolution,and 150μm axial resolution in a 4.6 mm×3.2 mm *** the best of our knowledge,we have demonstrated the first MEMS ultrasonic fingerprint sensor capable of imaging epidermis and sub-surface layer fingerprints.

the kinesin-like proteins, KAC1/2, regulate actin dynamics underlying chloroplast light-avoidance in Physcomitrella patens

In plants, light determines chloroplast position; these organelles show avoidance and accumulation re- sponses in high and low fluence-rate light, respectively. Chloroplast motility in response to light is driven by cytoskeletal elements. the actin cytoskeleton mediates chloroplast photorelocation responses in Arabidopsis thali- ana. In contrast, in the moss Physcomitrella patens, both, actin filaments and microtubules can transport chloroplasts. Because of the surprising evidence that two kinesin-like proteins （called KACs） are important for actin-dependent chloroplast photorelocation in vascular plants, we wanted to determine the cytoskeletal system responsible for the function of these proteins in moss. We performed gene- specific silencing using RNA interference in P. patens. We confirmed existing reports using gene knockouts, that PpKAC1 and PpKAC2 are required for chloroplast dispersion under uniform white light conditions, and that the two proteins are functionally equivalent. to address the specificcytoskeletal elements responsible for motility, this loss-of- function approach was combined with cytoskeleton-targeted drug studies. We found that, in P. patens, these KACs mediate the chloroplast light-avoidance response in an actin filament- dependent, rather than a microtubule-dependent manner. Using correlation-decay analysis of cytoskeletal dynamics, we found that PpKAC stabilizes cortical actin filaments, but has no effect on microtubule dynamics.
