The UV-A and UV-B wavelengths of solar radiation may seriously reduce viability of Metarhizium anisopliae conidia,a fungus used extensively in Brazil for insect pest *** conidial tolerances to UV-A and UV-B radiation were studied for one isolate(IBCB 425) commercially available product produced on rice *** or oil emulsion conidial suspensions were irradiated for 0(control),2,or 3 h using the solar simulator filtered with diacetate filter to remove UV-C radiation which afforded 652 mW·m-2 in the spectral range of 280～370 *** UV tolerance was based on conidial germination(viability) and virulence to Diatraea saccharalis *** formulated with oil emulsion had higher survival after 3 h of UV exposure,but the virulence of the conidia previously exposed to 2 h of UV radiation were similar when oil formulated or *** mortality of *** caterpillars exposed to non-UV-irradiated conidia was greater than that of larvae exposed to irradiated conidia,and the LT50 values were lower for the non-irradiated suspensions than for those *** apparent reduction in virulence was directly related reduction in viability or delay of germination of UV-irradiated conidia.

Biochar insights from laboratory incubations monitoring O_(2) consumption and CO_(2) production

Biochar has been touted as a long-term carbon sequestration ***,there are no studies evaluating biochar’s effect on oxygen(O_(2))consumption as a measure of the microbial respiration response to *** gain insight into this aspect,we evaluated O_(2) consumption rates to test the hypothesis that biochar is an efficient agent for carbon dioxide(CO_(2))sequestration in *** different biochar types and one activated charcoal were incubated alone and associated with three different soils for approximately 2 months in laboratory *** concentration of CO_(2) and O_(2) was periodically *** data presented here confirm that the CO_(2) production following biochar’s addition to soils results in a process that is correlated to oxygen ***,this overall stimulation is not clearly related to biochar *** carbon resulted in the highest statistically significant stimulation of activity,despite it possessing the lowest quantity of volatile carbon and mineral nutrient *** into consideration our results,we conclude that using biochar does achieve total carbon ***,the amount of available soil organic carbon following soil incorporation appears to be reduced following biochar addition and its long-term implication on this mineralizable soil organic carbon pool does deserve more research attention.

Twelve weeks of dance exergaming in overweight and obese adolescent girls:Transfer effects on physical activity,screen time,and self-efficacy

Background: Given the low levels of physical activity(PA) among adolescent girls in the US, there is a need to identify tools to motivate increased PA. Although there is limited evidence that adolescents transfer PA from one context to another, exergames(i.e., video games that require gross motor activity) may act as a gateway to promote overall PA outside game play. The purpose of this study was to examine potential transfer effects(i.e., influences on external behaviors and psychological constructs) of a 12-week exergaming intervention on adolescent girls' PA, screen time,and self-efficacy toward PA, as well as the intrinsic motivation of ***: Participants were 37 girls aged 14–18 years(65% African American, 35% white) who were overweight or obese(body mass index ≥ 85 th percentile) and were recruited from the community via school, physicians, news media, and social media websites. Adolescents were randomly assigned to a 12-week group exergaming intervention(thirty-six 60 min sessions of group-based dance exergaming in a research laboratory using Kinect for Xbox360(Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, WA, USA)) or to a no-treatment control group. Outcome variables included objectively measured PA(total) and self-reported leisure-time PA(discretionary time only) 1 week before vs. 1 week after the intervention; selected type and intensity of PA when placed in a gym setting for 30 min("cardio free choice"); screen time; self-efficacy toward PA; and intrinsic motivation toward ***: Attendance at the exergaming sessions was high(80%). Compared with the control group, the intervention group self-reported an increase in PA(p = 0.035) and fewer hours watching television or videos(p = 0.01) after the intervention, but there were no significant differences in sedentary, light, moderate, or vigorous PA measured by accelerometry.
