Man. territorial an.mals exhibit reduced aggression.towards n.ighbours. Kn.wn.as “the dear en.my effect”, this phen.men.n.has been.documen.ed amon. con.pecific an.mals across a wide ran.e of an.mal taxa. In.theory, the dear en.my effect can.also exist between.in.ividuals of differen. species, particularly when.those species compete for shared resources. To date, a heterospecific dear en.my effects has on.y been.documen.ed in.an.s. In.this study, we test for both a con.pecific an. heterospe-cific dear en.my effect in.n.otropical rufous-an.-white wren.Thryophilus rufalbus. This species competes for resources with ban.ed wren.Thryophilus pleurostictus, a closely related sympatric con.en.r. We used acoustic playback to simulate ruf-ous-an.-white wren.an. ban.ed wren.n.ighbours an. n.n.n.ighbours at the edges of rufous-an.-white wren.territories. Ruf-ous-an.-white wren. respon.ed more stron.ly to sign.ls from their own.species, demon.tratin. that residen. males discrimin.te between.con.pecific an. heterospecific rivals. They did n.t, however, exhibit a con.pecific dear en.my effect. Further, they did n.t exhibit a heterospecific dear en.my effect. This could be due to n.ighbours an. n.n.n.ighbours posin. similar levels of threat in.this system, to the possibility that playback from the edges of the subjects’ large territories did n.t simulate a threaten.n. sign.l, or to other factors. Our study provides the first test of a heterospecific dear en.my effect in.vertebrates, an. presen.s a valuable experimen.al approach for testin. for a heterospecific dear en.my effect in.other an.mals.
