Role of echo Doppler ultrasonography in the evaluation of postprandial hyperemia in cirrhotic patients

AIM: To assess the role of echo-Doppler ultrasonography in postprandial hyperemia in cirrhotic patients by comparing the results with the hepatic vein catheterization ***: Patients with cirrhosis, admitted to the portal hemodynamic laboratory were included into the study. After an overnight fast, echo-Doppler ultrasonography (basal and 30 min after a standard meal) and hemodynamic studies by hepatic vein catheterization (basal, 15 min and 30 min after a standard meal) were performed. Ensure Plus (Abbot Laboratories, North Chicago, IL) was used as the standard liquid meal. Correlation analysis of the echo-Doppler and hepatic vein catheterization measurements were done for the basal and postprandial ***: Eleven patients with cirrhosis (5 Child A, 4 Child B, 2 Child C) were enrolled into the study. After the standard meal, 8 of the 11 patients showed postprandial hyperemia with increase in portal blood flow, portal blood velocity and hepatic venous pressure gradient. Hepatic venous pressure gradient in the postprandial period correlated positively with postprandial portal blood velocity (r = 0.8, P < 0.05) and correlated inversely with postprandial superior mesenteric artery pulsatility index (r = -1, P < 0.01).CONCLUSION: Postprandial hyperemia can be efficiently measured by echo-Doppler ultrasonography and the results are comparable to those obtained with the hemodynamic studies.

A key component of the sensory experience is flavor, which reflects preferred customer desires for higher-quality fruits, vegetables, and cereals. However, breeders are currently facing difficulty in capturing flavor qualities across crops, which requires the deployment of multi-disciplinary genomics technologies to identify novel alleles and validate the function using genome editing techniques. Recently, Luo et al. (2024) published a work in Molecular Plant, reporting that the flavor traits of waxy corn are influenced by the preferential selection of brassinosteroid and benzoxazinoid pathway genes (ZmBZR1, ZmUGP1, and the benzoxazinoid biosynthetic [bx] genes), which caused significant differences in metabolic pathways of sweet metabolites such as 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one-glucoside (DIMBOA) and raffinose. Furthermore, flavor perception in the waxy corn population is unaffected by the desired breeding characteristic of “glutinous” texture.

The eating and cooking quality(ECQ)of rice is critical for determining its economic value in the marketplace and promoting consumer *** has therefore been of paramount importance in rice breeding ***,we highlight advances in genetic studies of ECQ and discuss prospects for further enhancement of ECQ in *** in gene-and genome-editing techniques have enabled improvements in rice *** genes and quantitative trait loci(QTLs)have been shown to regulate starch composition,thereby affecting amylose content and thermal and pasting properties.A limited number of genes/QTLs have been identified for other ECQ properties such as protein content and ***-assisted breeding has identified rare alleles in diverse genetic resources that are associated with superior ECQ *** post-genomics-driven information summarized in this review is relevant for augmenting current breeding strategies to meet consumer preferences and growing population demands.

Pure copper and its composites reinforced with Ni3Al particles were produced by powder metallurgy （PM）. Ni3Al powders were produced by mechanical ball milling from vacuum arc melted compounds. The Ni3Al powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）. The microscopy examinations revealed that the Ni3Al particles were distributed uniformly in the matrix. The effects of the particle fraction on the density, electrical conductivity, strength and dry sliding wear resistance of composite were investigated. It was found that the density and electrical conductivity of the composites decrease while the compression yield strength and wear resistance of composites increase with an increase in the particle fraction. The dry sliding wear tests were performed with pin-on-disk geometry. After sliding wear tests, the worn surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer （EDS）. Results have shown that the wear mechanism is oxidative and adhesive.

Coexistence of duodenum derived aggressive fibromatosis and paraduodenal hydatid cyst: A case report and review of literature

Intra-abdominal aggressive fibromatosis is a locally aggressive tumor mostly originating from the mesentery or retroperitoneal space, infiltrating adjacent tissues, and very rarely metastasizing to distant organs. There are only two case reports in the English language literature where intra-abdominal aggressive fibromatosis originated from the intestinal wall. In this study, we aimed to report a case of aggressive fibromatosis originating from the muscularis propria layer of the duodenum and invading pancreas. Another interesting aspect of this case is that a primary paraduodenal hydatid cyst was incidentally detected in the surgical specimen. A 46-year-old female patient presented to our clinic with postprandial nausea and vomiting. A contrast-enhanced abdominal computerized tomography revealed a mass lesion with a size of 100 mm × 80 mm which originated from the distal pancreas and compressed the gastric pilor externally. Upon exploration the distal part of duodenum, proximaljejunum, and pancreatic mass were noted to form a conglomerated structure. Therefore, the fourth part of the duodenum, a 25 cm part of the proximal jejunum, distal pancreas, and the spleen were excised enbloc. The pathology report of the specimen indicated fibromatosis with a diameter of 55 mm that originated from the muscularis propria of the duodenum and extended into the pancreatic parenchyma. There was also an incidentally detected 10 mm paraduodenal hydatid cyst. No tumor recurrence was detected at a follow-up period of 24 mo. In conclusion, the most ideal treatment of desmoid-type fibromatosis is surgical resection of the mass lesion with clean surgical borders. Although rare, this tumor may originate from the intestinal wall. Histopathological verification is of great significance for a proper diagnosis.

Effect of vasoactive intestinal peptide on the wound healing of alkali-burned corneas

AIM： To study the effect of vasoactive intestinal peptide （VIP） on wound healing in experimental alkali burns of the cornea. METHODS： Twenty-seven albino rabbits, weighing 3.2 -0.75 kg were used. Alkali burns were induced on corneas by applying 10 mm Whatman paper No：50 soaked in 1 mol/L NaOH. They have further classified into 5 groups as follows： 1） control group given no treatment （n=5）; 2） VIP given subconjunctivally （n=6）; 3） VIP injected into anterior chamber （n=6）; 4） NaCI 0.9% given subconjunctivally （n=5）; 5） NaCI 0.9% given into the anterior chamber （n=5）. All treatment protocols except control group were followed by topical eye drops composed of VIP at two hourly intervals for one week from 8 *** to 6 p.m, RESULTS： VIP treated groups of rabbits with alkali burns were found to have better wound healing findings histo-pathologically when compared to those of control group who have received no treatment on day 30. No differences were observed between groups in respect to degree of polymorphonuclear leukocytes （PMNL） infiltration and degree of loss of amorphous substrate on day 15. However, PMNL infiltration and degree of loss of amorphous substrate were lower in Groups 2 and 3 when compared to that of control group on day 30 （P〈0.05）. CONCLUSION： We have shown that VIP has positive effects on alkali induced corneal burns. VIP may inhibit PMNL migration to cornea through an immunomodulatory effect. Inhibition of PMNL migration might reduce the release of collagenaees and this might prevent the extracellular amorphous substance loss.

Most applications of surfactants depend on formation and characteristics of micelle. In this study we measured critical micelle concentration (CMC) of cationic surfactant N, N’, N’-polyethylene (10)-N tallow-1, 3-di amine propane (PEG-10 tallow) in aqua solution by using electrical conductivity and surface tension methods. The CMC value of PEG-10 tallow with two different methods was found very close to 1.40 × 10?3 M with electrical conductivity, and 1.41 × 10?3 M with surface tension. It also investigated the effect of inorganic salt (NaCl) and pH on micellization of cationic surfactant PEG-10 tallow. With increasing addition of NaCl, formation of micelle structure resulted in a higher CMC. However, at low salt concentrations smaller CMC value was observed comparing the critical micelle concentration of individual PEG-10 tallow. When it comes to the effect of changing pH in CMC of the PEG-10 tallow , it was clearly found that micelle formation or CMC of surfactant was independent on alkaline pH (between 6 and 10), but it was dependent on acidic pH (below 5).
