Background: To understand what life is like for US children with a diagnosis of Growth Hormone Deficiency or Idiopathic Short Stature, the impact of short stature on Health related Quality of Life (HrQoL) was qualitatively examined and needs for care from the young patients and their parents perspective were identified. Methods: Focus group discussions with 26 American-English speaking and nine American-Spanish speaking children and their parents were conducted, transcribed verbatim and subsequently qualitatively analyzed by two independent raters, using an existing coding guideline, based on the multidimensional HrQoL concept and a special software (VERBI-Software MAXQDA 10). Results: A total of 1313 statements for the English-speaking and 447 statements for the Spanish-speaking families were categorized. In the US, the strongest frequency of mention was found for the HrQoL dimension “Social” across respondents, followed by “Treatment” and “Emotion”. Conclusion: Conducting and analyzing data generated from focus groups ensure that young patients’ experiences of disease are represented in the measure of outcomes for use in clinical trials and patient care.

从海南红树林土壤分离筛选抗耐甲氧西林金黄色葡萄球菌(MRSA)菌株,通过形态学观察、生理生化试验及分子生物学进行菌种鉴定。采用不同培养基优选抑菌活性物质生成条件;以有机溶剂萃取抑菌活性物质,采用气相色谱-质谱(GC-MS)分析抑菌物质化学成分,采用微量稀释法测定最低抑菌浓度与最低杀菌浓度。结果表明,筛选得到一株抗MRSA菌株,编号为NEL-002,被鉴定为萎缩芽孢杆菌(Bacillus atrophaeus)。菌株NEL-002采用LB液体培养基得到发酵液经石油醚萃取粗提物抗MRSA菌活性最强,且在40~80℃、pH在5~10较稳定,对多种蛋白酶不敏感;最低抑菌质量浓度为62.5μg/mL,最低杀菌质量浓度为500μg/mL。GC-MS鉴定出抗菌活性物质为十甲基环戊硅氧烷、十二甲基环六硅氧烷及邻苯二甲酸二丁酯。

This study was conducted to determine the compatibility of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi associated with eucalypts on dipterocarps. Two nodal cuttings of Shorea contorta (Vid.) were rooted in a non-mist system for two months, and later inoculated with vegetative mycelia of three strains of Pisolithus collected under eucalypts and a strain of Scleroderma from dipterocarps. Inoculated rooted cuttings were planted in irradiated potting mix and raised in the nursery for five months. Root colonization prior to outplanting ranged from 31% to 38% and ECM fungi did not colonize the uninoculated ones. The cuttings were outplanted in a logged-over dipterocarp forest in Bislig, Surigao Sur following a Randomized Complete Block Design with four blocks;each block was planted with 50 seedlings. Two years after outplanting, Pisolithus strain from New Caledonia (H6394) promoted the highest height (46 cm) and diameter (0.48 cm) increment. Height was increased by 17% and diameter by 7% relative to the uninoculated control. By contrast, Pisolithus strain from the Philippines (H615) gave the shortest (26 cm) height increment and smallest (0.42 cm) diameter. Diameter growth of cuttings inoculated with Scleroderma D01 (from the Philippines) and a Pisolithus strain from Australia (H445) was bigger (0.47 cm) than the uninoculated treated cuttings (0.45 cm). In terms of survival, the uninoculated cuttings gave the highest (90%) percent survival while the lowest (60%) was those inoculated with Pisolithus strain from New Caledonia. It is possible that the indigenous ECM fungi infected easily the roots of the uninoculated cuttings thus contributing to the high survival rate (90%). During outplanting, fruit bodies of S. columnare were present in the field site. The results, however, show that ECM fungi were able to colonize the roots and that some strains promoted the growth and survival of S. contorta planted in a logged-over dipterocarp forest in Bislig, Surigao, Philippines.

Understanding the origin of the catalytic activity for the development of efficient catalysts is critical yet ***,we report a simple strategy for the synthesis of chromium nitride nanoparticles(CrNNPs)encapsulated into hollow chromium-nitrogen-carbon capsules(CrN@H-Cr-N_(x)-C).The CrN@H-Cr-N_(x)-C demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)in acidic *** applied as a cathode material in a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC),the CrN@H-Cr-N_(x)-C achieved outstanding initial performance,which is better than that of the PEMFC with H-Cr-N_(x)-C cathode *** CrN@H-Cr-N_(x)-C cathode also showed good stability over 110 h of *** results demonstrated that the coexistence of atomically dispersed CrN_(x) sites and sufficient CrNNPs is essential for excellent PEMFC *** functional theory(DFT)studies further corroborated that CrNNPs can boost the ORR activity of H-Cr-N_(x)-*** finding opens a new avenue for the fabrication of low-cost,highly active,and durable ORR catalysts for PEMFC and other applications.

BACKGROUND Chronic cocaine use is associated with stroke, coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction, resulting in severe impairments or sudden mortality. In the absence of clear cardiovascular symptoms, individuals with cocaine use disorder (iCUD) seeking addiction treatment receive mostly psychotherapy and psychiatric pharmacotherapy, with no attention to vascular disease (i.e., atherosclerosis). Little is known about the pre-clinical signs of cardiovascular risk in iCUD and early signs of vascular disease are undetected in this underserved population. AIM To assess inflammation, plaque burden and plaque composition in iCUD aiming to detect markers of atherosclerosis and vascular disease. METHODS The bilateral carotid arteries were imaged with positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) in iCUD asymptomatic for cardiovascular disease, healthy controls, and individuals with cardiovascular risk. PET with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) evaluated vascular inflammation and 3-D dark-blood MRI assessed plaque burden including wall area and thickness. Drug use and severity of addiction were assessed with standardized instruments. RESULTS The majority of iCUD and controls had carotid FDG-PET signal greater than 1.6 but lower than 3, indicating the presence of mild to moderate inflammation. However, the MRI measure of wall structure was thicker in iCUD as compared to the controls and cardiovascular risk group, indicating greater carotid plaque burden. iCUD had larger wall area as compared to the healthy controls but not as compared to the cardiovascular risk group, indicating structural wall similarities between the non-control study groups. In iCUD, wall area correlated with greater cocaine withdrawal and craving. CONCLUSION These preliminary results show markers of carotid artery disease burden in cardiovascular disease-asymptomatic iCUD. Background: Recent advances in breast reconstruction and the introduction of oncoplastic techniques have resulted in significant improvement in quality of life and psychological well-being of most patients. Nipple sparing mastectomy is a surgical technique that removes breast tissue while preserving the native skin envelope, infra-mammary fold and the NAC, which allows immediately reconstructed breasts to have an excellent cosmetic outcome. Aim: Our primary end point was for objective assessment of aesthetic outcome after NSM via more accurate new method and subsiding bias in that assessment and the secondary end point was for evaluating the influence of incision choice and recommending which incision is the best for each patient putting in mind cup size, degree of ptosis and body mass index of Egyptian patients. Methods: Starting January 2013 to November 2015, 74 patients with breast cancer underwent NSM with immediate reconstruction using LD flap with or without implant augmentation. Results: Incisions used are elliptical (37.8%), lateral (27%), peri-areolar (21.6%) and infra-mammary (13.5%). In 81.1% of the patients, the procedure was performed using extended LD flaps only, while in the remaining 18.9% the flaps were augmented using implant insertion. Axillary dissection was done in 68.9% of patients and SLN in 24.3% of patients. Overall aesthetic results were done by patient self-assessment, assessment by the surgeon, assessment by professional plastic breast surgeon and assessment by onco-plastic surgeon, and this was followed by statistical analysis of the agreement between the plastic surgeon and the onco-plastic surgeon. Conclusion: NSM is safe, feasible and offers adequate oncologic results along with excellent cosmetic outcome. Choice of incision and reconstruction should be tailored to suit each patient. Breast cancer patients can benefit from sound resection and enjoy a sense of wholeness.

This inaugural study in Benin was aimed at assessing neuropsychological and behavioural problems of patients with traumatic brain injury managed at the Hubert Koutoukou Maga Teaching hospital in Cotonou, and the impact on their standard of leaving. This was a prospective and cross-cutting study with a descriptive and analytical aim. It was carried out from 1 July to 30 October 2018. The study population included patients over 15 years of age who had experienced TBI. A purposive sampling of 585 patients with TBI was done, of which 142 patients could not be reached by phone while. The mean age of patients was 37.16 ± 13.9 years, with extremes ranging from 16 to 87 years. The most frequent complaints were behavioural disorder (79.5%), headache (63.8%) and memory loss (50.4%). The average duration of post traumatic amnesia was 9.08 ± 38.56 days. Sixty-three patients (68.5%) had post-traumatic amnesia that lasted less than 30 minutes and 25 patients (19.2%) had post-traumatic amnesia that lasted over a month. Neuropsychological disorders were more frequent in patients with severe TBI. Attention disorders and difficulties in elaborating strategies were noticed without any statistically significant difference in mild, moderate as well as severe TBI. Nineteen patients lost their job, thus raising the unemployment rate in our sample from 6% to 21%. Among the 100 patients (75%) that recovered their job, 14% had medical follow-up and 10% returned to part-time work. Salary remained unchanged for 61.2% of TBI patients.

Dear Editor, In plants, the transport of sugars from the site of biosynthesis to the site of utilization or storage relies on sugar transporters located in different subcellular compartments and different vascular cell types. The SWEET sugar transporter family is one such class and is represented by 17 members in Arabidopsis. AtSWEET1 was the first plant SWEET transporter to be characterized; it acts as a glucose uniporter in multiple systems （Chen et al., 2010）.
