Urbanization affects plant flowering phenology and pollinator community:effects of water availability and land cover

Introduction:Climate change and urbanization have been shown to alter plant ***,a mechanistic understanding of these changes in flowering phenology and associated pollinator communities is ***,this study was designed to examine finer scale flowering phenological patterns and driving processes in an arid urban ***,we tested the effect of water availability and land cover type on the flowering phenology of brittlebush(Encelia farinosa)and investigated the arthropod pollinator community associated with ***:The fieldwork was carried out as part of a larger community ecology experiment following a factorial nested *** chose three land cover types,each of which had three replicates,resulting in a total of nine *** water availability manipulations,60 genetically different 5-gallon potted plants were placed on the ground within each ***-trapping was used to collect potential ***:Our results showed that water availability did not produce significant differences in flowering ***,brittlebush planted in mesiscaped urban sites bloomed later,longer,and at a higher percentage than those planted in desert remnant sites and desert fringe ***,desert remnant sites were significantly lower in pollinator abundance than desert fringe *** richness varied over time in all land cover ***:This study provides empirical evidence that land cover type,which is strongly correlated to temperature,is the primary cause for altered flowering phenology of brittlebush in the Phoenix area,although water availability may also be ***,land cover affects total abundance of bee pollinators.

An uncommon source of upper gastrointestinal bleeding:epiphrenic esophageal diverticulum

Esophageal diverticula are rare findings that have an estimated incidence of 1 per 500000 people per year,even though acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding is a relatively common medical emergency with an incidence of up to 150 per 100000 people per year and a mortality rate of 7-14%.An 83-year-old man presented with hematemesis and *** upper endoscopy revealed an esophageal diverticulum,within which was an adherent *** of the clot identified a bleeding vessel within the diverticulum;this was successfully clipped and hemostasis was *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first case report of a bleeding epiphrenic esophageal diverticulum that was successfully managed endoscopically with hemostatic clips *** rare,our case serves as a reminder that bleeding epiphrenic esophageal diverticula can present as massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding and urgent endoscopic therapy can be life-saving.

Exploring Barriers and Opportunities in Adopting Crowdsourcing Based New Product Development in Manufacturing SMEs

Crowdsourcing is an innovative business practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content or even funds by soliciting contributions from a large group of people （the ＇Crowd＇）. The potential benefits of utilizing crowdsourcing in product design are well-documented, but little research exists on what are the barriers and opportunities in adopting crowdsourcing in new product development （NPD） of manufacturing SMEs. In order to answer the above questions, a Proof of Market study is carried out on crowdsourcing-based product design under an Innovate UK funded Smart project, which aims at identifying the needs, challenges and future development opportunities associated with adopting crowdsourcing strategies for NPD. The research findings from this study are reported here and can be used to guide future development of crowdsourcing-based collaborative design methods and tools and provide some practical references for industry to adopt this new and emerging collaborative design method in their business.

Reservoir quality of fluvial sandstone reservoirs in salt-walled mini- basins： an example from the Seagull field, Central Graben, North Sea, UK

The Triassic fluvial sandstones of the Skagerrak Formation were deposited in a series of salt-walled mini-basins and act as important hydrocarbon reservoirs for several high-pressure, high-temperature（HPHT） fields in the Central Graben, North Sea. The HPHT reservoirs exhibit excellent reservoir quality considering their depth of burial and hence have been of high interest for hydrocarbon exploration. This research uses a multidisciplinary approach to assess the Skagerrak Formation fluvial reservoir quality from the Seagull field incorporating core analysis, petrography, electron microscopy, XRD analysis, fluid inclusion appraisal and burial history modelling. Halokinesis and salt withdrawal at the margin of the saltwalled mini-basin induced early disaggregation bands and fractures at shallow burial and led to increased influx of meteoric water and clay mineral infiltration from overlying sedimentation. The density of disaggregation bands correlates with the occurrence and magnitude of pore-filling authigenic clay minerals, concentrated along the margin of the saltwalled mini-basin. The fluvial channel sandstones of the Skagerrak Formation are subject to strong intra-basinal spatial reservoir quality variations despite diagenesis and low vertical effective stress having played a favourable role in arresting porosity loss.

Design equations for maximum stress concentration factors for concrete-filled steel tubular K-joints

Stress concentration factors(SCFs) for welded tubular joints can be decreased by filling the chord with concrete leading to a longer fatigue life. However, there are currently no design formula available in guidelines to predict the SCF of concrete-filled circular hollow section(CFCHS) K-joints, thus limiting their applicability in bridge design. To address this gap,finite element models for CFCHS K-joints were developed and compared against test results to ensure their accuracy. Then, a comprehensive parametric study was conducted to establish relationships between maximum SCFs and four variables: brace-to-chord diameter ratio(β), chord diameter-to-thickness ratio(2γ), brace-to-chord thickness ratio(τ), and the angle between braces and chord(θ). A total of 480 FE models were examined under three loading conditions including brace and chord loading: balanced axial force, chord axial force, and chord bending. Design equations to predict the maximum SCF for CFCHS Kjoints were established by multiple regression analyses of the numerical results. A comparison of maximum SCFs between circular hollow section(CHS) and CFCHS K-joints was made, and it was concluded that average reductions of 42% and 33% in maximum SCFs in CFCHS K-joints at the locations of the chord and brace were found compared to CHS joints for balanced axial force, respectively. Finally, a case study illustrating how to use the proposed equations for fatigue safety verification was presented.

CYTOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS ON INDUCED GENETIC MALE STERILE MUTANTS IN RICE (ORYZA SATIVA L.)

The eytological basis of pollen abortion was investigated in rice genetic male sterile(GMS) lines controlled by single recessive genes. Four types, namely stainable pollen abor-tion (SPA), partial pollen abortion (PPA), complete pollen abortion (CPA), and no pollen(NP), were compared with the original cultivar M-101. Observations on chromosome beha-vior and tetrad analysis at meiosis showed that apparent chromosome aberrationswere closely related to the sterility in these GMS lines. The cytological abnor-malities occurring during the pollen development in these rice GMS lines were more pro-found and extensive than those reported in cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) rice. At leastthirteen kinds of abnormalities were seen from the pre-meiotic stages to post-meiotic stagesin this study. The existence of microsporocytic pseudoplasmodium, sticking pollen, andpollen dissolution implied that abnormalities were occurring simultaneously in the anther walllayers, particularly in the tapetum.

In late 2019,reports arose of a new respiratory disease in China,identified as a novel coronavirus,severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus *** World Health Organisation named the disease caused by the virus‘coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)’.It was declared a pandemic in early 2020,after the disease rapidly spread across the ***-19 has not only resulted in substantial morbidity and mortality but also significantly impacted healthcare service provision and training across all medical specialties with gastroenterology and Hepatology services being no ***,most,if not all‘nonurgent’services have been placed on hold during surges of *** a result there have been delayed diagnoses,procedures,and surgeries which will undoubtedly result in increased morbidity and *** services have been converted to remote consultations where possible in many *** have been redeployed to help care for COVID-19 patients in other settings,resulting in disruption to their training-particularly endoscopy and outpatient *** has led to significant anxiety amongst trainees,and risks prolongation of *** is of the utmost importance to develop strategies that continue to support COVID-19-related service provision,whilst also supporting existing and future gastroenterology and Hepatology services and *** to healthcare provision during the pandemic have generated new and improved frameworks of service and training delivery,which can be adopted in the post-COVID-19 world,leading to enhanced patient care.
