The inhibition performance of 1-hydralazinophthalazine (HPZ) (1), and synthesized1-(2-[(5-methylfuran-2-yl)methylene)] hydrazono) phthalazine (MFHPZ) (2), 1-(phthalazin-1(2H)-one) [(pyridin-2-yl) ethylidene] hydrazone (ACPHPZ) (3) and (2-acetylthiophene hydrazono) phthalazine (ACTHPZ) (4) has been investigated for mild steel in 1 M HCl. Compound 4 shows maximum inhibition efficiency of 93% at 5.0 × 10-3 M concentration. The evaluation of thermodynamics and activation parameters indicated spontaneous adsorption of the inhibitor molecules which takes place through chemisorption. The adsorption of 3 and 2 follows Langmuir adsorption isotherm and Temkin adsorption isotherm for 4 and 1. The inhibitor efficiency was of the order 4 > 3 > 1 > 2. Impedance study for the representative inhibitor compounds 4 and 3 showed that decrease in charge transfer resistance is responsible for effective protection of mild steel surface by the tested inhibitor.

A novel chiral nickel (II) complex of n-(2-pyridylmethyl)-L-alanine (Hpyala) 1 has been prepared and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-visible, TGA and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Complex 1 crystallizes in an orthorhombic P212121 space group. The nickel (II) centre in the complex adopts a distorted octahedral geometry. This compound has been seen to exhibit structural diversity resulting from the number of lattice water molecules. The photoluminescent properties of this compound which have also been investigated, indicates the potential application in luminescence.

A novel mixed barium(II)/silver(I)/chromium(III) oxalate salt, Ba0.5Ag2[Cr(C2O4)3]·5H2O (1), with open architecture has been synthesized in water and characterized by elemental analysis, vibrational and electronic spectra, and single crystal X-ray structure determination. Compound 1 crystallizes in a monoclinic space group C2/c, with unit cell parameters a = 18.179(3), b = 14.743(2), c = 12.278(2)Å, β = 113.821(3), V = 3010.34(90) Å3, Z = 8. The structure is characterized by a network of anionic [Cr(C2O4)3]3- units connected through the O atoms of the oxalates to Ba2+ and Ag+ sites, forming a three-dimensional coordination polymer with one-dimensional isolated nanochannels parallel to the c axis, and encapsulating hydrogen-bonded guest water molecules. The bulk structure is consolidated by O–H···O bridgings within the nanochannels and by coulombic interactions.

The reaction of 2-ethylimidazole and zinc formate monohydrate in 1:2 ratio in toluene leads to the formation of bis(2-ethylimidazole)bis(formato)zinc(II)-water (1/1), [Zn(n2H8C5)2(OCHO)2]·H2O, 1 which has been characterized by several techniques, including elemental and thermal analyses, IR, 1HnMR and 13CnMR spectroscopies, single crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT studies. The results obtained show that this complex crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system of the Pbca space group, with cell parameters a = 14.7230(2) Å, b = 7.3880(10) Å, c = 29.0843(4) Å, α = 90°, β = 90°, γ = 90°, V = 3163.73 Å3 and Z = 8. The zinc center is bound to two molecules of 2-ethylimidazole, two formate molecules in a tetrahedral coordination geometry. One water of crystallization is present in the coordination sphere of the compound. Its molecular crystalline structure is strengthened by O/n-H…O, O-H…π, O-H…H, C-H…O, H…π, π…O and π…π interactions. The optimized structure, frontier molecular orbitals, global reactivity descriptors, molecular electrostatic potential, natural bond orbitals and the Mulliken atomic charges were investigated through theoretical studies.

Two novel coordination compounds, [Zn(L)2(OOCH)2] (1) and [Zn(L)3(OCHO)](OCHO)]·H2O (2) (where L = 2-isopropylimidazole, C6H10n2) have been prepared by reaction of 2-isopropylimidazole with zinc(II) formate at room temperature using toluene as solvent. These compounds were characterized by elemental and thermal analyses, IR, 1HnMR and 13CnMR spectroscopies, single crystal X-ray diffraction and DFT studies. The Zn centers in 1 and 2 adopt pseudo-tetrahedral coordination geometries. Compound 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system P2/c space group whereas compound 2 crystallizes in the P-1 space group of the triclinic crystal system. Several types of hydrogen intra-/intermolecular interactions are observed in these materials and extend into a two-dimensional leaf like network in 1 and a two-dimensional lattice of rectilinear pillars in 2. Compounds 1 and 2 were also optimized and their frontier molecular orbitals, global reactivity descriptors, molecular electrostatic potential, natural bond orbitals were investigated using density functional theory (DFT). In fact the induced structural differences from complex 1 to complex 2 led to the reduction of the frontier molecular orbital energy gap by 1.338 eV and a decrease of the chemical hardness by 0.669 eV.
