Identifying female phenotypes that promote behavioral isolation in a sexually dimorphic species of fish Etheostoma zonale

In sexually dimorphic species characterized by exaggerated male ornamentation,behavioral isola-tion is often attributed to female preferences for conspecific male ***,in a number of sexu-ally dimorphic species,male mate choice also results in behavioral *** many of these cases,the female traits that mediate species boundaries are *** in sexually dimorphic species typically lack many of the elaborate traits that are present in males and that are often used for taxonomic classification of *** a diverse and largely sexually dimorphic group of fishes called darters(Percidae:Etheostoma),male mate choice contributes to behavioral isolation be-tween a number of species;however,studies addressing which female traits males prefer are *** this study,we identified the dominant female pattern for two sympatric species,Etheostoma zonale and Etheostoma barrenense,using pattern energy analysis,and we used discriminate func-tion analysis to identify which aspects of female patterning can reliably classify *** then tested the role of female features in male mate choice for ***,by measuring male preference for computer animations displaying the identified(species specific)conspecific *** found that the region above the lateral line is important in mediating male mate preferences,with males spending a significantly greater proportion of time with animations exhibiting conspecific female patterning in this region than with animations exhibiting heterospecific female *** results suggest that the aspects of female phenotypes that are the target of male mate choice are different from the conspicuous male phenotypes that traditionally characterize species.

The use of artificial stimuli in tests of animal behavior are common,and as technological advances increase,opportunities for the use of 3D computer animations in behavioral tests are becoming increasingly available(Witte et al.2017).The importance of easy-tomanipulate,consistent,and reliably performing stimuli is clear,and this is readily achievable with the use of computer *** of animated stimuli is critical,however,to ensure that behaviors observed in response to artificial,computer-generated stimuli are equivalent to what would be expected if animals were presented with a comparable live stimuli(Woo and Rieucau 2011;Chouinard-Thuly et al.2017;Powell and Rosenthal 2017).

Initiation of Programmed Cell Death in self-Incompatibility： Role for Cytoskeleton Modifications and several Caspase-Like Activities

Programmed cell death （PCD） is an important and universal process regulating precise death of unwanted cells in eukaryotes. In plants, the existence of PCD has been firmly established for about a decade, and many components shown to be involved in apoptosis/PCD in mammalian systems are found in plant cells undergoing PCD. Here, we review work from our lab demonstrating the involvement of PCD in the self-incompatibility response in Papaver rhoeas pollen. This utilization of PCD as a consequence of a specific pollen-pistil interaction provides a very neat way to destroy unwanted ＇self＇, but not ＇non-self＇ pollen. We discuss recent data providing evidence for sI-induced activation of several caspase-like activities and suggest that an acidification of the cytosol may be a key turning point in the activation of caspase-like proteases executing PCD. We also review data showing the involvement of the actin and microtubule cytoskeletons as well as that of a MAPK in signalling to caspase-mediated PCD. Potential links between these various components in signalling to PCD are discussed. Together, this begins to build a picture of PCD in a single cell system, triggered by a receptor-ligand interaction.

Extracellular vesicles(EVs)are membranous vesicular structures released from almost all eukaryotic cell types under different physiological or pathological *** evidence demonstrates that EVs can serve as mediators of intercellular communication between donor and recipient cells or microorganism-infected and noninfected *** disease 2019(COVID-19)disease is caused by infection of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(sARs-CoV-2)of host cells in the respiratory system and various extra-pulmonary tissue/organs,resulting in complications of multiple organ *** the cell surface receptor,angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2)mediates cellular entry of sARs-CoV-2 into the host cells in patients with *** studies have found that ACE2 can be released with EVs,which have been shown to interfere with the entry of the virus into host cells and thus may be involved in COVID-19 *** addition,ACE2,neprilysin(NEP),and thimet oligopeptidase(TOP)are the key enzymes that regulate angiotensin metabolism by converting angiotensin II or angiotensin I to angiotensin 1-7,the latter of which has protective effects in counterbalancing the harmful effects of angiotensin II in COVID-19 *** review summarizes the recent research progress regarding EV-associated ACE2,NEP,and TOP and the perspectives of their potential involvement in the pathophysiology of COVID-19 disease.

Introduction“There is a kink(shoulder)on[the]Lys peak...”These words scribed in Richard ***’s laboratory notebook marked the discovery of protein methylation and a segue into a new field of scientific research[1].Initially,through ion-exchange chromatography and two-dimensional paper chromatography of the hydrolysate of salmonella typhimurium flagellin,this“kink”was interpreted as a“new amino acid”,the e-Nmethyl-lysine(NML).This discovery,bolstered by a subsequent examination of purified NML,was the first glimpse of protein methylation in living cells[1].

The DNA damage response（DDR） is a complex biological system activated by different types of DNA *** in certain components of the DDR machinery can lead to genomic instability disorders that culminate in tissue degeneration,premature aging,and various types of ***,malfunctioning DDR plays a role in the etiology of late onset brain degenerative disorders such as Parkinson＇s,Alzheimer＇s,and Huntington＇s *** many years,brain degenerative disorders were thought to result from aberrant neural *** we discuss the evidence that supports our novel hypothesis that brain degenerative diseases involve dysfunction of glial cells（astrocytes,microglia,and oligodendrocytes）.Impairment in the functionality of glial cells results in pathological neuro-glial interactions that,in turn,generate a ‘‘hostile＂ environment that impairs the functionality of neuronal *** events can lead to systematic neural demise on a scale that appears to be proportional to the severity of the neurological deficit.

Therapeutic response in children with ADHD: role of observers and settings

Background This study aims at characterizing the extent of correlation of treatment response (TR) obtained in various observation settings (home,school,clinic) by different observers (parents,teachers,clinicians).Methods Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) underwent a 2-week double-blind,randomized,cross-over clinical trial with methylphenidate and placebo,and various measures were obtained during the 2 *** of TR were examined using Pearson's correlation *** The study included 526 children (420 male,106 female) with *** between different observers shows a variable correlation between parents and *** correlation is seen between parents/teacher evaluation of TR and laboratory-based measures (Continuous Performance Task;Restricted Academic situation scale).Conclusion The results firmly support the need to synthesize information from many sources in evaluating TR in ADHD.
