Diverse foraging strategies of breeding Swinhoe's Storm-petrel in the productive marginal sea of the Northwest Pacific

Understanding the foraging behavior is essential for investigating seabird ecology and conservation,as well as monitoring the well-being of the marine environment.Breeding seabirds adopt diverse foraging strategies to maximize energy gains and cope with the intensified challenges of parenting and self-maintenance.Such tradeoff may stem from the heterogeneity of food resources and the constraints of central place foraging.Nevertheless,abundant marine productivity could alleviate the energy limitation for seabirds,resulting in a consistent foraging approach.Here,we investigated the foraging strategy during the breeding season of a cryptic small-sized seabird,Swinhoe’s Storm-petrel(Hydrobates monorhis),in the Yellow Sea,a productive marginal sea of the Northwest Pacific.Using GPS tracking,we evaluated habitat preference,quantified the foraging strategy,and tested if environmental conditions and individual traits influence foraging trips.We found that Swinhoe’s Storm-petrels preferred nearshore areas with shallow water and engaged in primarily short foraging trips.Distinctive southeastward and southwestward strategies emerged when combining trip metrics,including foraging direction,duration,and maximum distance.The bathymetry,proximity to the coastline,and sea surface temperature differed in two foraging strategies.Foraging strategies exhibited flexibility between individuals,potentially explained by wing morphology,in which longer-winged birds are more likely to embark on longer-distance foraging trips.These findings highlight the impact of environmental factors and individual traits on seabirds’foraging decisions in productive marginal sea ecosystems.Our study also provides valuable insights into the foraging ecology of this Asian endemic storm-petrel.

Universal dynamic scaling and Contact dynamics in quenched quantum gases

Recently universal dynamic scaling is observed in several systems,which exhibit a spatiotemporal self-similar scaling behavior,analogous to the spatial scaling near phase transition.The latter one arises from the emergent continuous scaling symmetry.Motivated by this,we investigate the possible relation between the scaling dynamics and the continuous scaling symmetry in this paper.We derive a theorem that the scaling invariance of the quenched Hamiltonian and the initial density matrix can lead to the universal dynamic scaling.It is further demonstrated both in a two-body system analytically and in a many-body system numerically.For the latter one,we calculate the dynamics of quantum gases quenched from the zero interaction to a finite interaction via the non-equilibrium high-temperature virial expansion.A dynamic scaling of the momentum distribution appears in certain momentum-time windows at unitarity as well as in the weak interacting limit.Remarkably,this universal scaling dynamics persists approximately with smaller scaling exponents even if the scaling symmetry is fairly broken.Our findings may offer a new perspective to interpret the related experiments.We also study the Contact dynamics in the BEC−BCS crossover.Surprisingly,the half-way time displays a maximum near unitarity while some damping oscillations occur on the BEC side due to the dimer state,which can be used to detect possible two-body bound states in experiments.

Rechargeable sodium-ion batteries(SIBs)are considered as the next-generation secondary batteries.The performance of SIB is determined by the behavior of its electrode surface and the electrode–electrolyte interface during charging and discharging.Thus,the characteristics of these surfaces and interfaces should be analyzed to realize large-scale energy storage systems with high energy density and long-cycle stability.Although various studies have investigated the properties of electrode materials,few studies have focused on the construction of stable and efficient SIB interfaces,and even fewer have explored the mechanisms of interfacial effects;however,the strategies of regulating interfacial effects are yet to be completely developed.Moreover,the results obtained thus far are insufficient to draw systematic conclusions.The present study reviews the literature on the mechanism of interfacial effects in Na+storage devices.The interfaces in a sodium-ion storage device include a heterogeneous interface between electrode materials,a solid electrolyte interphase,and a cathode electrolyte interphase.The interfacial effects during the intercalation,transformation,and alloy reactions and the resulting overall battery performance were theoretically analyzed.In this review,we aim to provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the structures of electrode surface and electrode–electrolyte interface to optimize the performance of SIBs.In addition,the challenges of investigating interfacial effects and several possible helpful methods and opportunities for studying the mechanisms of interfacial effects in SIBs will be presented.

Spin-orbit interaction induced Casimir-Lifshitz torque between two-dimensional electron gases

We investigate theoretically the Casimir interaction between two parallel two-dimensional electron gases(2DEGs) with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions(SOIs), based on the quantum field theory. We derive an analytical expression for the polarization tensor and obtain the solution to the motion equation of the electromagnetic(EM) field. We calculate the CasimirLifshitz torque(CLT) between two parallel 2DEGs with Rashba and Dresselhaus SOIs, which can be tuned by changing the relative strength between two SOIs. The anisotropic Casimir energy between 2DEGs caused by the interplay between the SOIs of 2DEGs offers a new origin of CLT and a new type of optoelectronic device.

Hygrothermal effect on high-velocity impact resistance of woven composites

The woven glass fiber reinforced composites(GFRP)subjected to high-speed impact is investigated to identify the hygrothermal aging effect on the impact resistance.Both the hygrothermal aged and unaged glass/epoxy laminates are subjected to different impact velocities,which is confirmed as a sensitive factor for the failure modes and mechanisms.The results show the hygrothermal aging effect decreases the ballistic limit by 14.9%,but the influence on ballistic performance is limited within the impact velocity closed to the ballistic limit.The failure modes and energy dissipation mechanisms are confirmed to be slightly influenced by the hygrothermal aging effect.The hygrothermal aging effect induced localization of structural deformation and degradation of mechanical properties are the main reasons for the composite undergoing the same failure modes at smaller impact velocities.Based on the energy absorption mechanisms,analytical expressions predict the ballistic limit and energy absorption to reasonable accuracy,the underestimated total energy absorption results in a relatively poor agreement between the measured and predicted energy absorption efficiency.

Engineering molecular regulation for SiO_(x) with long-term stable cycle and high Coulombic efficiency as lithium-ion battery anodes

In the current situation where the practical application of silicon anode materials encounters great challenges,silicon oxide(SiO_(x),0≤x≤2)has attracted the attention of researchers due to its relatively small volume expansion,stable cycling performance,and low cost,which is possible to realize commercial applications earlier than silicon anode.However,it remains a challenge to prepare SiO_(x)materials with long-term stable cycling performance and high Coulombic efficiency using low-cost methods.In this work,SiO_(x)anode material with high Coulombic efficiency and good long-term cycling stability was prepared at a low cost by hydrolysis of siloxane and in situ polymerization of phenolic resin.The hydrolysis of siloxane was further regulated by different silane coupling agents to regulate the size and microstructure of prepared SiO_(x)materials,which displayed the substantially improved electrochemical performance.The excellent electrochemical performance of SiO_(x)prepared by regulated hydrolysis of siloxane with silane coupling agents is attributed to the effect of silane coupling agent on size and microstructure of SiO_(x),revealing that the strategy of modulating the hydrolysis of siloxane by silane coupling agent is a potential method to prepare high-performance SiO_(x)materials.

Investigating the Absorption and Desorption Behavior of Methylene Chloride in the Poly(aryl ether ketone) Film with Different Crystallinities

Poly(aryl ether keton e)(PAEK) films with different crystallinities were obtained by controlling the cooling rate,which were subjected to the absorption and desorption of methylene chloride(CH_(2)Cl_(2)).We employed attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared(ATR-FTIR)spectroscopy analyses to investigate the diffusion behavior of CH_(2)Cl_(2) in PAEK films with different crystallinities.According to the Fickian diffusion model,the calculated diffu sion coefficients of CH_(2)Cl_(2) in PAEK films were observed to decrease with increasing crystallinity.The effect of CH_(2)Cl_(2)absorption and desorption on the mechanical properties of PAEK films with different crystallinity was further analyzed using tensile tests.The tensile tests exhibited that CH_(2)Cl_(2) has two concurrent effects:plasticization and solvent-induced crystallization.Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction(WXRD) techniques further confirmed solvent-induced crystallization behavior.The results would be beneficial to understand the solvent resistance of PAEK materials and consequently provide the practical application conditions of PAEK with a theoretical basis.

Understanding the cooperative effects in the catalysis of homodimeric fluoroacetate dehalogenase

Fluoroacetate dehalogenases(FAcD),a homodimeric enzyme,catalyzes the conversion of fluoroacetic acid to glycolic acid(GoA).It has been proved that the enzyme has a half-of-the-site reactivity.Namely,its catalytic(C)subunit converts the first substrate to a covalent intermediate;then,the non-catalytic(NC)subunit binds a second substrate and promotes the conversion of the intermediate in the C subunit into the final product.After the release of the product,the C subunit becomes the NC subunit,and the previous NC subunit becomes the C subunit.To elucidate the detailed mechanism behind this cooperative catalysis,we have conducted microsecond-scale MD simulations along the reaction pathway.The simulations indicate that the substrate in the NC subunit induces W185 and Y141 adopting an open conformation in the C subunit.The opening of W185(C)facilitates the entry of catalytic water,enhancing the catalytic activity for product formation,while the opening of Y141(C)creates an unfavorable environment for product binding,promoting its release.An interaction network analysis reveals that the substrate in the NC subunit can induce conformational changes through a conserved water chain at the interface.

Visualizing the landscape of appendiceal tumor research after 2010: A bibliometric study

BACKGROUND Despite the rarity of appendiceal tumors,research in this field has intensified,resulting in a growing number of studies and published papers.Surprisingly,no comprehensive bibliometric analysis has specifically addressed appendiceal tumors.AIM To offer a thorough analysis of the current landscape and future trends in appendiceal tumor research.METHODS In our bibliometric analysis studies,we explored the Web of Science Core Collection database.The bibliographic details of the chosen publications were automatically converted and analyzed using the bibliometric package in the R environment.Additionally,we employed VoSviewer to create cooperation network maps for countries,institutions,and authors,as well as clustering maps for keywords.Furthermore,CiteSpace,another software tool,was utilized to build dual-map overlays of journals and analyze references with citation bursts.RESULTS Our study included 780 English-language articles published after 2010.The number of related publications and citations has increased in the past decade.The United States leads in this area,but there is a need to improve cooperation and communication among countries and institutions.Co-occurrence analysis also revealed close collaboration among different authors.Annals of Surgical Oncology was the most influential journal in this field.Analysis of references with high cocitations and references with citation bursts,consistent with analysis of keywords and hotspots,indicated that current research primarily centers on the classification and management of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms and consequent pseudomyxoma peritonei.Despite the abundance of clinical studies,a greater number of in-depth basic research studies should be conducted.CONCLUSION Current research on appendiceal tumors focuses on classification and management of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms and pseudomyxoma peritonei.Enhanced collaboration and basic research are vital for further advancement.
