Comparative analysis of various modularization algorithms and species specific study of VEGF signaling pathways

In biology, signal transduction refers to a process by which a cell converts one kind of signal or stimulus into another. It involves ordered sequences of biochemical reactions inside the cell. These cascades of reactions are carried out by enzymes and activated by second messengers. Signal transduction pathways are complex in nature. Each pathway is responsible for tuning one or more biological functions in the intracellular environment as well as more than one pathway interact among themselves to carry forward a single biological function. Such kind of behavior of these pathways makes understanding difficult. Hence, for the sake of simplicity, they need to be partitioned into smaller modules and then analyzed. We took VEGF signaling pathway, which is responsible for angiogenesis for this kind of modularized study. Modules were obtained by applying the algorithm of Nayak and De (Nayak and De, 2007) for different complexity values. These sets of modules were compared among themselves to get the best set of modules for an optimal complexity value. The best set of modules compared with four different partitioning algorithms namely, Farhat’s (Farhat, 1998), Greedy (Chartrand and Oellermann, 1993), Kernighan-Lin’s (Kernighan and Lin, 1970) and Newman’s community finding algorithm (Newman, 2006). These comparisons enabled us to decide which of the aforementioned algorithms was the best one to create partitions from human VEGF signaling pathway. The optimal complexity value, on which the best set of modules was obtained, was used to get modules from different species for comparative study. Comparison among these modules would shed light on the trend of development of VEGF signaling pathway over these species.

The comparison between physical properties and chemical structures of several polysiloxanes was studied at initial state and upon ageings. Techniques such as densimetry, gel permeation chromatography, FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravim- etric analysis coupled with IR spectroscopy and the new tool photo-DSC were used to give assessments of average mo- lecular weight, chemical evolution, cristallinity and thermal stability. Different types of ageing such as thermal ageing (60?C and 100?C), photo-ageing and acid vapour ageing were performed. After ageing we observed an evolution of chemical structures and physical properties for all samples. The main pathway of degradation is given for each sample. It results in oxidation, chain scission or cross-linking. Cross-linking levels are dependant on the type of ageing, the chemical structure and the initial rate of cristallinity. Cross-linking reactions are favoured after photo-ageing. Oxidation is higher for polysiloxane with aliphatic carbon chain.

The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) has marked the beginning of a new pandemic named coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19). The World Health Organization has announced it as a health emergency that is of international concern. The disease has been reported to cause respiratory illness, pneumonia and even hinder the immunity of an individual. Individuals with disturbed immune responses have been found to be quite susceptible to this viral infection. Oral cancer patients are also at high risk in this pandemic situation and might encounter severe detrimental outcomes. Angiotensin receptors, documented in studies as the path of entry of this virus, are highly expressed in the epithelial cells of oral mucosa, making the group of individuals with oral cancers even more vulnerable. Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer is another potential target for SARS-CoV-2. An exhaustion of angiotensin converting enzyme 2 cell receptors leads to protumoral effects, whereas a downregulation of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer leads to antitumoral effects. Thus, it causes a variation of the biological behavior of the tumor. This article focusses on the molecular mechanisms, effects and pathophysiology of COVID-19 in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients. The different molecular changes in oral squamous cell carcinoma in the background of COVID-19 will modify various environmental factors for this pathology and have an effect on the carcinogenesis process. Understanding the behavior of the tumor will help plan advanced treatment strategies for oral squamous cell carcinoma patients in the background of COVID-19.

目的:研究印度中部患者的特征和角膜屈光手术(KRS)实践。方法:回顾性研究2017-06/2022-04在印度中部某三级眼科护理中心行KRS的患者410例。记录患者的人口统计学资料,如年龄、性别、居住地(城市或农村)、屈光不正、手术原因、最佳矫正视力、手术类型、术后随访和并发症。结果:410例患者中,324例接受KRS(79.0%)。其中,200例(61.7%)行激光辅助原位角膜磨镶术(LASIK),124例(38.3%)行屈光性角膜切除术(PRK)。研究组最终由179名女性和145名男性组成。患者平均年龄为(25±3.5)岁。大多数患者来自城市地区(n=250,77.2%)。右眼和左眼的平均术前显性屈光度分别为-4.5±2.1和-4.9±2.0。LASIK患者双眼平均手术时间为(15±2)min,PRK患者双眼平均手术时间为(17±3)min。未出现上皮内向生长、皮瓣愈合并发症或感染,且无患者需行增强手术。角膜厚度不理想(n=28,32.6%)是排斥手术最常见的原因。随访1a,3名接受LASIK手术的患者出现回退(-0.5D±1D),屈光度校正分别为-6.75D,-8.5D,-7.0D。结论:LASIK是印度中部人群矫正屈光不正的主要手术。虽然PRK手术的数量很少,但LASIK和PRK都具有良好的视力预后。高度近视选择LASIK时应考虑近视消退。
