Climate Variabilities of Sea Level around the Korean Peninsula

In order to study the climate variabilities of the sea level around the Korean Peninsula, tidal data observed at local stations in Korea were compared against those obtained using TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) altimetric sea level data. In the course of our study, the amount of sea level rise was estimated using the tidal data from 9 stations selected by an anomaly coherency analysis. The results indicated that the sea level has risen by 0.28 cm yr-1 around the Korean Peninsula over the past two decades. The extent of such a rise is about two times higher than that of the global increase (0.1-0.2 cm yr-1). However, because most global warming effects occurred mainly over mid- and high-latitudes, this level of change appears to be realistic. According to the spectral analysis (at a spectral window of k=2, k is the number of subdivisions), the decadal band of sea level variability is computed at 30% of the energy. Its spectral peak is found at 12.8 years. In the interannual band, the predominant sea level variability is in the 1.4-1.9-year band, with a sharp peak at 1.6 years. A secondary peak, although marginal, has a period of 2.2 years. Based on our estimates of sea level height from Topex/Poseidon, the quasi-biennial periodicity of 1.6 years is the representative interannual sea level variability in the seas adjacent to Korea. Trends vary greatly according to the geographical location, from a maximum of 1.0 cm yr-1 (the southern sector of the East Sea) to a minimum of 0.17 cm yr-1 (the northern sector of the East Sea). This is fairly consistent with the qualitative description already given with reference to the global map. As an analogue to the pattern seen in Korea, that of the Yellow Sea reveals practically the same trend as that of the adjacent seas (0.56 cm yr-1). However, in the case of TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) data, there is no clear evidence of a linkage between the interannual sea level variability around the Korean Peninsula and ENSO.

A new method for growing silicon nanowires is presented. They were grown in an aqueous solution at a temperature of 85℃ under atmospheric pressure by using sodium methylsiliconate as a water-soluble silicon precursor. The structure, morphology, and composition of the as-grown nanowires were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. It was also confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy that the silicon nanowire has a hexagonal structure. It was possible to grow the crystalline silicon nanowires at low temperature under atmospheric pressure because potassium iodide, which was used as a gold etchant, sufficiently increased the surface energy and reactivity of gold as a metal catalyst for the reaction of the Si precursor even at low temperature.

Stretchable and conformal humidity sensors that can be attached to the human body for continuously monitoring the humidity of the environment around the human body or the moisture level of the human skin can play an important role in electronic skin and personal healthcare applications. However, most stretchable humidity sensors are based on the geometric engineering of non-stretchable components and only a few detailed studies are available on stretchable humidity sensors under applied mechanical deformations. In this paper, we propose a transparent, stretchable humidity sensor with a simple fabrication process, having intrinsically stretchable components that provide high stretchability, sensitivity, and stability along with fast response and relaxation time. Composed of reduced graphene oxide-polyurethane composites and an elastomeric conductive electrode, this device exhibits impressive response and relaxation time as fast as 3.5 and 7 s, respectively. The responsivity and the response and relaxation time of the device in the presence of humidity remain almost unchanged under stretching up to a strain of 60% and after 10,000 stretching cycles at a 40% strain. Further, these stretchable humidity sensors can be easily and conformally attached to a finger for monitoring the humidity levels of the environment around the human body, wet objects, or human skin.

Anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies （AAR） are considered pathognomonic and pathogenetic for myasthenia gravis （MG）. AAR detection confirms clinical diagnosis of MG. However, AAR is rarely detected in patients without MG. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in a normal subject without MG have not been adequately addressed in previous studies. The present study reports on a case study of a healthy, elderly man with high AAR titers for 14 years. Pathophysiological mechanisms could be due to AAR heterogeneity in specificity, affinity, and multiform, and to muscle variability in response to AAR.

AIM： To evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of postoperative chemoradiation using FP chemotherapy and oral capecitabine during radiation for advanced gastric cancer following curative resection. METHODS： Thirty-one patients who had underwent a potentially curative resection for Stage Ⅲ and Ⅳ （M0） gastric cancer were enrolled. Therapy consists of one cycle of FP （continuous infusion of 5-FU 1000 mg/m^2 on d 1 to 5 and cisplatin 60 mg/m^2 on d 1） followed by 4500 cGy （180 cGy/d） with capecitabine （1650 mg/m daily throughout radiotherapy）. Four wk after completion of the radiotherapy, patients received three additional cycles of FP every three wk. The median follow-up duration was 22.2 mo. RESULTS： The 3-year disease free and overall survival in this study were 82.7% and 83.4%, respectively. Four patients （12.9%） showed relapse during follow-up. Eight patients did not complete all planned adjuvant therapy. Grade 3/4 toxicities included neutropenia in 50.2%, anemia in 12.9%, thrombocytopenia in 3.2% and nausea/ vomiting in 3.2%. Neither grade 3/4 hand foot syndrome nor treatment related febrile neutropenia or death were observed. CONCLUSION： These preliminary results suggest that this postoperative adjuvant chemoradiation regimen of FP before and after capecitabine and concurrent radiotherapy appears well tolerated and offers a comparable toxicity profile to the chemoradiation regimen utilized in INTo0116. This treatment modality allowed successful Ioco-regional control rate and 3-year overall survival.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is uncommon in the colon and *** we report a case of GCT in the transverse colon.A 48-year-old male patient underwent a screening colonoscopy.A yellowish sessile lesion,about 4 mm in diameter,was found in the transverse *** endoscopic snare resection was performed without complication. Histological examination revealed the tumor consisted of plump neoplastic cells with abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm containing acidophilic periodic acid Schiff- positive,diastase-resistant *** analysis showed the tumor cells expressed S-100 protein and neuron-specific ***,the resected tumor was diagnosed as a *** GCTs are usually benign,endoscopic resection constitutes an easy and safe treatment. Colonoscopists should consider the possibility of GCT in the differential diagnosis of submucosal tumors of the colon.
