The development of alternative wood composites based on the use of waste or recycled materials can be beneficial due to over exploitation of natural *** this frame,an option for the successful utilization of waste polystyrene which avoids environmental problems that formaldehyde adhesives cause and also reduces waste dis-posal,is its potential application as a binder for the production of value-added environmentally friendly and low cost wood *** types of panel were successfully made,consisting of wood dust and two recycled poly-styrene contents,namely,15%and 30%.Both physical properties,water absorption and thickness swelling,and mechanical properties,modulus of rupture,shear strength parallel in the plane of the board and glue line shear strength,were significantly improved as the recycled polystyrene content increased from 15%to 30%.Water absorption and thickness swelling after 24 h immersion in water were improved by 165%and 750%as the recycled polystyrene content increased from 15%to 30%.The magnitude of the improvement in mechanical properties however,was less pronounced than of the physical properties since modulus of rupture,shear strength parallel in the plane of the board and glue line shear strength were increased by 43.6%,50%and 61.5%,*** low viscosity of the recycled polystyrene caused more mobility inside the panel matrix and therefore,an improved penetration took place into adequate depth of the compressed dust *** is concluded that boards can be successfully produced using these waste raw materials,wood dust and recycled polystyrene in organic solvent as a binder,and therefore it can reduce waste disposal and provide cleaner production for the development of wood-based boards.

The Major Facilitator Superfamily(MFS)is ubiquitous in living organisms and represents the largest group of secondary active membrane *** plants,significant research efforts have focused on the role of specific families within the MFS,particularly those transporting macronutrients(C,n,and P)that constitute the vast majority of the members of this *** MFS families remain less explored,although a plethora of additional substrates and physiological functions have been ***,the lack of a systematic approach to analyzing the MFS as a whole has obscured the high diversity and versatility of these ***,we present a phylogenetic analysis of all annotated MFS domaincontaining proteins encoded in the Arab/dops/s fA?a//ana genome and propose that this superfamily of transporters consists of 218 members,clustered in 22 *** reviewing the available information regarding the diversity in biological functions and substrates of Arab/dops/s MFS members,we provide arguments for intensified research on these membrane transporters to unveil the breadth of their physiological relevance,disclose the molecular mechanisms underlying their mode of action,and explore their biotechnological potential.

Cultivation of bay leaves （Cinnamomum tamalanees ＆ Eberm） to fulfil household income needs is a long established practice in Udayapur district of nepal. The practices adopted by farmers for bay leaf harvesting have not, however, been validated by scientific investigation for their sustainability. To investigate the impacts of harvesting on the yield of branch, leaves and biomass of leaves, a two-year research project was conducted in farm fields at Kopche village of Routa VDC in Udayapur district, nepal. Four different harvesting treatments, the orien-tation and the order of branches were taken as independent variables to test their effects on number of branches, leaves and biomass of leaves. Orientation, harvesting treatments and order of branches had a significant effect on the number of branches, but not on the number of leaves or biomass （fresh and dry weight） of leaves in the year of harvest. Between two consecutive harvests there was no significant difference in the num-ber of branches, leaves or biomass. Lower two-thirds portion of the trees produced the largest number of leaves and branches of the fourth order in both years. Therefore, lower two-thirds portion of the trees were suitable for harvesting. Our findings support farmer experience that no change in productivity of leaves is observed when harvesting each year. For long term sustainability, harvesting should be conducted without debarking of trees or damage to branches. Our findings could be extrapolated to and tested in other areas with different access and user rights where the rota-tion for harvest is fixed or regulated without research evidence.

Influence of Livestock Soil Eutrophication on Floral Composition in the Pyrenees Mountains

Livestock behaviour in the Pyrenees includes free grazing and a long resting period that provokes the accumulation of dung and urine in some places,so-called camping areas. The aims of this study were (i) to analyze any change in floral composition,and in nutritional and chemical contents of plants in a livestock camping area; and (ii) to relate the floral composition with soil chemical properties. In a linear transect,five sampling zones were established,from the centre of the camping area to the surrounding nardus stricta-dominant pasture. The above ground plant biomass and the topsoil were sampled in each zone with 6 replicates per zone. Plant species were classified and weighed to calculate above ground biomass,nutritional and chemical contents,and Shannon diversity and evenness indices. Additionally,soils were sampled in two periods,at the beginning and at the end of grazing period. Soil available nutrients (nitrate,ammonium,phosphorus,potassium,calcium and magnesium),total nitrogen,organic carbon and pH were measured. Plant chemical contents (protein,lignin and others) were significantly related to the proportions of grasses,legumes and other plants; so,the protein content is positively correlated with legumes plant biomass while lignin content is negatively correlated with grasses. Both plant and soil nutrients increased linearly towards the centre of the camping area. However,the relationship among plant species richness,diversity and evenness relative to its position along the studied transect was bell-shaped. From the outskirts to the centre of the camping area,plants with low nutrient demand were progressively replaced by those with medium and high nutrients demand and by pioneers. nardus stricta-dominant pasture has low plant diversity and plant nutrient content as well as a poor soil nutrient availability. AIM:To determine the prevalence and significance of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC)-specific autoantibodies in firstdegree relatives (FDRs) of Greek PBC patients. METHODS:The presence of antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA) and PBCspecific antinuclear antibodies (AnA) were determined using indirect immunofluores-cence assays, dot-blot assays, and molecularly based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in 101 asymp-tomatic for liver-related symptoms FDRs of 44 PBCpatients. In order to specify our results, the same investigation was performed in 40 healthy controls and in a disease control group consisting of 40 asymptomatic for liver-related symptoms FDRs of patients with other autoimmune liver diseases namely, autoimmune hepati-tis-1 or primary sclerosing cholangitis (AIH-1/PSC). RESULTS: AMA positivity was observed in 19 (only 4 with abnormal liver function tests) FDRs of PBC patients and none of the healthy controls. The preva-lence of AMA was significantly higher in FDRs of PBC patients than in AIH-1/PSC FDRs and healthy controls [18.8%, 95% confidence interval (CI):12%-28.1% vs 2.5%, 95% CI:0.1%-14.7%, P = 0.01; 18.8%, 95% CI:12%-28.1% vs 0%, 95% CI: 0%-10.9%, P = 0.003, respectively]. PBC-specific AnA positivity was observed in only one FDR from a PSC patient. Multivariate analysis showed that having a proband with PBC independently associated with AMA positivity (odds ratio: 11.24, 95% CI:1.27-25.34, P = 0.03) whereas among the investigated comorbidities and risk factors, a positive past history for urinary tract infections (UTI) was also independently associated with AMA detection in FDRs of PBC patients (odds ratio:3.92, 95% CI:1.25-12.35,P = 0.02). COnCLUSIOn:In FDRs of Greek PBC patients, AMA prevalence is significantly increased and independently associated with past UTI. PBC-specific AnA were not detected in anyone of PBC FDRs.

Some animals have the capacity to produce different alarm calls for terrestrial and aerial predators. However, it is not clear what cognitive processes are involved in generating these calls. One possibility is the position of the predator： Anything on the ground receives a terrestrial predator call, and anything in the air receives an aerial predator call. Another possibility is that animals are able to recognize the physical features of predators and incorporate those into their calls. As a way of elucidating which of these mechanisms plays a primary role in generating the structure of different calls, we performed two field experiments with Gunnison＇s prairie dogs. First, we presented the prairie dogs with a circle, a triangle, and a square, each moving across the colony at the same height and speed. Second, we presented the prairie dogs with two squares of differing sizes. DFA statistics showed that 82.6 percent of calls for the circle and 79.2 percent of the calls for the triangle were correctly classified, and 73.3 percent of the calls for the square were classified as either square or circle. Also, 100 percent of the calls for the larger square and 90 percent of the calls for the smaller square were correctly classified. Because both squares and circles are features of terrestrial predators and triangles are features of aerial predators, our results suggest that prairie dogs might have a cognitive mechanism that labels the abstract shape and size of different predators, rather than the position of the predator [Current Zoology 58 （5）： 741-748, 2012].
