Hydroxyapatite is a type of calcium phosphate-based material with great interest for biomedical applications, due to the chemical similarity between this material and the mineral part of human bone. However, synthetic hydroxyapatite is essentially brittle;the practice indicates that the use of hydroxyapatite without additives for implant production is not efficient, due to its low strength parameters. In the present work, biocomposites of hydroxyapatite-wollastonite were synthesized by an alternative sol-gel route, using calcium nitrate and ammonium phosphate as precursors of hydroxyapatite, and high purity natural wollastonite was added in ratios of 20, 50 and 80 percent by weight immersed in aqueous medium. Formation of hydroxyapatite occurs at a relatively low temperature of about 350?C, while the wollastonite remains unreacted. After that, these biocomposites were sintered at 1200?C for 5 h to produce dense materials. The characterization techniques demonstrated the presence of hydroxyapatite and wollastonite as unique phases in all products.

Enzalutamide is a hormonal therapy that blocks the action of androgens, such as testosterone in the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN) overlap and are part of an adverse drug reaction continuum of disease, in which there is a 10% - 30% involvement of the skin surface with mucositis, blisters, skin slough, and a macular rash. A 66-year-old male was treated with enzalutamide for metastatic prostate cancer and developed SJS/TEN overlap with 25% total body surface area skin involvement. The patient received a seven-day course of cyclosporine to which he responded by re-epithelialization but succumbed to multi-organ failure. While SJS/TEN has been reported with apalutamide, to our knowledge, this is the first case of SJS/TEN overlap with enzalutamide.

The pervasive effects of lighting environments on sensory drive in bluefin killifish： an investigation into male/male competition, female choice, and predation

Sensory drive predicts that the conditions under which signaling takes place have large effects on signals, sensory systems, and behavior. The coupling of an ecological genetics approach with sen sory drive has been fruitful. An ecological genetics approach compares populations that experi ence different environments and asks whether population differences are adaptive and are the result of genetic and/or environmental variation. The multifaceted effects of signaling environ ments are wellexemplified by the bluefin killifish. In this system, males with blue anal fins are abundant in tanninstained swamps that lack UV/blue light but are absent in clear springs where UV/blue light is abundant. Past work indicates that lighting environments shape genetic and envir onmental variation in color patterns, visual systems, and behavior. Less is known about the select ive forces creating the across population correlations between UV/blue light and the abundance of blue males. Here, we present three new experiments that investigate the roles of lighting environ ments on male competition, female mate choice, and predation. We found strong effects of lighting environments on male competition where blue males were more likely to emerge as dominant in teastained water than in clear water. Our preliminary study on predation indicated that blue males may be less susceptible to predation in teastained water than in clear water. However, there was little evidence for female preferences favoring blue males. The resulting pattern is one where the effects of lighting environments on genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity match the direction of selection and favor the expression of blue males in swamps.

The member of Rho family of small GTPases Cdc42 plays important and conserved roles in cell polarity and motility. The Cdc42ep family proteins have been identified to bind to Cdc42, yet how they interact with Cdc42 to regulate cell migration remains to be elucidated. In this study, we focus on Cdc42epl, which is expressed predominantly in the highly migratory neural crest ceils in frog embryos. Through morpholino-mediated knockdown, we show that Cdc42epl is required for the migration of cranial neural crest cells. Loss of Cdc42epl leads to rounder cell shapes and the formation of membrane blebs, consistent with the observed disruption in actin organization and focal adhesion alignment. As a result, Cdc42ep1 is critical for neural crest cells to apply traction forces at the correct place to migrate efficiently. We further show that Cdc42ep1 is localized to two areas in neural crest celts： in membrane protrusions together with Cdc42 and in perinuciear patches where Cdc42 is absent. Cdc42 directly interacts with Cdc42epl （through the CRIB domain） and changes in Cdc42 level shift the distribution of Cdc42epl between these two subcellular locations, controlling the formation of membrane protrusions and directionality of migration as a consequence. These results suggest that Cdc42ep1 elaborates Cdc42 activity in neural crest cells to promote their efficient migration.

Post-weaning and whole-of-life performance of pigs is determined by live weight at weaning and the complexity of the diet fed after weaning

The production performance and financial outcomes associated with weaner diet complexity for pigs of different weight classes at weaning were examined in this experiment. A total of 720 weaner pigs(360 entire males and 360 females) were selected at weaning(27 ± 3 d) and allocated to pens of 10 based on individual weaning weight(light weaning weight: pigs below 6.5 kg; medium weaning weight: 6.5 to8 kg; heavy weaning weight: above 8.5 kg). Pens were then allocated in a 3 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with the respective factors being weaning weight(heavy, medium and light; H, M and L,respectively), weaner diet complexity(high complexity/cost, HC; low complexity/cost, LC), and gender(male and female). Common diets were fed to both treatment groups during the final 4 weeks of the weaner period(a period of 39 days). In the first 6 d after weaning, pigs offered the HC diets gained weight faster and used feed more efficiently than those offered the LC diets(P = 0.031). Pigs fed a HC diet after weaning tended to be heavier at the sale live weight of 123 d of age compared with pigs fed the LC diet(P = 0.056). There were no other main effects of the feeding program on growth performance through to slaughter. Weaning weight had a profound influence on lifetime growth performance and weight at 123 d of age, with H pigs at weaning increasing their weight advantage over the M and L pigs(101.3,97.1, 89.6 kg respectively, P nefit analyses suggested there was a minimal benefit in terms of cost per unit live weight gain over lifetime when pigs were offered a HC feeding program to L,with a lower feed cost/kg gain. The results from this investigation confirm the impact of weaning weight on lifetime growth performance, and suggest that a HC feeding program should be focused on L weaner pigs(i.e., weaning weight less than 6.5 kg at 27 d of age) in order to maximise financial returns.

The notion of broken k-diamond partitions was introduced by Andrews and ***△k(n)denote the number of broken k-diamond partitions of *** and Paule also posed three conjectures on the congruences of△2(n)modulo 2,5 and *** and Sellers proved the conjectures for modulo 2,and Chan proved the two cases of modulo *** the case of modulo 3,Radu and Sellers obtained an infinite family of congruences for△2(n).In this paper,we obtain two infinite families of congruences for△2(n)modulo 3 based on a formula of Radu and Sellers,a 3-dissection formula of the generating function of triangular number due to Berndt,and the properties of the U-operator,the V-operator,the Hecke operator and the Hecke *** example,we find that△2(243n+142)≡△2(243n+223)≡0(mod 3).The infinite family of Radu and Sellers and the two infinite families derived in this paper have two congruences in common,namely,△2(27n+16)≡△2(27n+25)≡0(mod 3).

This work investigates frequency distributions of strings within a text. The mathematical derivation accounts for variable alphabet size, character probabilities, and string/text lengths, under both the Bernoullian and the Markovian model for string generation. The analysis is limited to the set of nonclumpable strings, that cannot overlap with them selves. Two formulae （exact and approximated） are derived, calculating the frequency distribution of a string of length m found inside a text of length n （with m 〈： n）. The approximated formula has a constant complexity （in contrast to an exponential com plexity of the exact） and makes it applicable to very long texts. The proposed formulae were applied to analyze string frequencies in a portion of the human genome, and to recalculate frequencies of known repeated motif within genes, associated to genetic dis eases. A comparison with stateoftheart methods was provided. The formulae presentedhere can be of use in the statistical evaluation of specific motif frequencies within very long texts （e.g. genes or genomes） and help in characterizing motifs in pathologic conditions.

The oomycete,Phytophthora capsici,infects cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.)*** age-related resistance(ARR)to this pathogen was previously observed in fruit of cultivar‘Vlaspik’and shown to be associated with the *** fruits are highly susceptible,but develop resistance at~10–12 days post pollination(dpp).Peels from resistant(16 dpp)versus susceptible(8 dpp)age fruit are enriched with genes associated with defense,and methanolic extracts from resistant age peels inhibit pathogen *** we compared developing fruits from‘Vlaspik’with those of‘Gy14’,a line that does not exhibit *** analysis of peels of the two lines at 8 and 16 dpp identified 80 genes that were developmentally upregulated in resistant‘Vlaspik’16 dpp versus 8 dpp,but not in susceptible‘Gy14’at 16 dpp.A large number of these genes are annotated to be associated with defense and/or specialized metabolism,including four putative resistance(R)genes,and numerous genes involved in flavonoid and terpenoid synthesis and *** metabolomic analysis was performed on extracts from 8 and 16 dpp‘Vlaspik’and‘Gy14’fruit peels using Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography and Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass *** analysis of the metabolomes identified 113 ions uniquely abundant in resistant‘Vlaspik’16 dpp peel *** most abundant compounds in this group had relative mass defects consistent with terpenoid *** of the three most abundant ions were annotated as glycosylated nor-terpenoid ***,these analyses reveal potential mechanisms by which ARR to *** may be conferred.

Transcriptome analysis based on high-throughput sequencing of a cDnA library has been widely applied to functional genomic ***,the cDnA dependence of most RnA sequencing techniques constrains their ability to detect base modifications on RnA,which is an important element for the post-transcriptional regulation of gene *** comprehensively profile the n^(6)-methyladenosine(m^(6)A)and n^(5)-methylcytosine(m5 C)modifications on RnA,direct RnA sequencing(DRS)using the latest Oxford nanopore Technology was applied to analyze the transcriptome of six tissues in *** 94 million reads were generated,with an average length ranging from 619 nt to 1013 nt,and a total of 45,707 transcripts across 34,763 genes were *** profiles of transcripts at the isoform level were quantified among ***-wide mapping of m^(6)A and m5 C demonstrated that both modifications exhibited tissue-specific *** transcripts with m^(6)A modifications tended to be modified by m5 C,and the transcripts with modifications presented higher expression levels along with shorter poly(A)tails than transcripts without modifications,suggesting the complexity of gene expression *** Ontology analysis demonstrated that m^(6)A-and m5 C-modified transcripts were involved in central metabolic pathways related to the life cycle,with modifications on the target genes selected in a tissue-specific ***,most modified sites were located within quantitative trait loci that control important agronomic traits,highlighting the value of cloning functional *** results provide new insights into the expression regulation complexity and data resource of the transcriptome and epitranscriptome,improving our understanding of the rice genome.
