Diversity of click beetles in managed nonnative coniferous and native beech stands: Consequences of changes in the structural and species composition of tree stands in Central Europe

The natural composition of forests has undergone significant changes over recent centuries.A closer-to-natural tree species composition has long been perceived as key to a high *** investigated the impact on communities of click beetles(Elateridae)caused by changes in the tree species composition of spruce monocultures compared to reference sites of recently unmanaged natural beech *** collect data,passive interception traps were distributed within managed spruce stands of different age classes and natural beech forests of various developmental *** beetle species richness was slightly but not significantly higher in the beech *** saproxylic species group was significantly more common in the spruce stands,whereas the group of nonsaproxylic species was significantly more abundant in the beech *** the commercial stands,the significantly highest species richness was in the clearings(0–10-year-old stands),and at this forest age class,the vast majority of the beetle species occurred in the spruce *** the developmental stages of the natural forest,a slightly higher beetle richness was found at the disintegration *** study results suggested that different tree species compositions and stand structures affect the communities of click beetles and substantially change their species composition and thus their response to external ***,management of stands using diverse silvicultural systems is recommended for creating diverse ecological niches in forests.

Sol-gel borate bioactive glasses(BGs)are promising ion-releasing biomaterials for wound healing ***,we report the synthesis of a series of binary B_(2)O_(3)-CaO borate BGs(CaO ranging from 50 to 90mol%)using a sol-gel-based *** influence of CaO content in B_(2)O_(3)-CaO borate BG on morphology,structure and ion release behavior was investigated in *** dissolution(ion release)and crystallization could be observed in borate BGs when CaO content increased,while the morphology was not significantly altered by increasing CaO *** results evidenced that the ion release behavior of borate BGs could be tailored by tuning the B_(2)O_(3)/CaO molar *** also evaluated the in vitro cytotoxicity,hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic activities of borate *** was validated for all borate ***,borate BGs exhibited composition-dependent hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic ***,higher contents of Ca in borate BGs facilitated hemostatic activity,while higher contents of B_(2)O_(3) were beneficial for pro-angiogenic *** synthesized sol-gel-derived borate BGs are promising materials for developing advanced wound healing dressings,given their fast ion release behavior and favorable hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic activities.

Purpose To compare 4 methods for intraoperative pupil dilatation in eyes with pseudoexfoliation syndrome and insufficient pupil size during phacoemulsificatio n. Design Prospective, randomized, comparative, interventional case series. Part icipants Forty eyes of 40 patients with pseudoexfoliation and maximally dilated pupil size smaller than 3.5 mm. Intervention Mechanical pupil dilatation with ir is-retractor hooks (group I), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) pupil dilator-rin g (Morcher, Stuttgart, Germany) (group II),Beehler pupil dilator (group III), an d bimanual stretching (group IV). Main outcome measures Performance (pupil size achieved), complications, and added surgical time. Results The mean pupil sizes achieved with the PMMA pupil-dilator ring, Beehler pupil dilator, and bimanual stretching were 5.9±0.6 mm, 5.5±0.8 mm, and 4.9±0.7 mm, respectively. A squar e-shaped pupil was achieved with iris-retractor hooks, and the mean size of th e largest circle that can fit in this square was 5.6±0.6mm. There were no stati stically significant differences in the postdilatation pupil sizes between the 4 study groups (P >0.05). Apart from self-limited intraoperative hemorrhage from pupil margin, iris sphincter rupture was the only observed complication related to mechanical pupil dilatation. This occurred in 4 eyes in groups I and III, 3 eyes in group IV, and 1 eye in group II (P >0.05). The mean added surgical time for placement of iris-retractor hooks and for implantation of a PMMA pupil-dil ator ring was 297±51 and 176±54 seconds, respectively. The additional time req uired for pupil dilatation with the Beehler pupil dilator and bimanual stretchin g was 65±8 and 55±10 seconds, respectively. Dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging findings of bone metastasis in patients with prostate cancer

AIM:To evaluate the dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) findings of bone metastasis in prostate cancer ***:Sixteen men with a diagnosis of metastatic prostate cancer to bones were examined with DCE-MRI at 1.5 *** mean contrast agent concentration vs time curves for bone metastasis and normal bone were calculated and K trans and ve values were estimated and ***:An early significant enhancement (wash-out:n=6,plateau:n=8 and persistent:n=2) was detected in all bone metastases (n=16).Bone metastasis from prostate cancer showed significant enhancementand high K trans and ve values compared to normal bone which does not enhance in the elderly *** mean K trans was 0.101/mmiinn and 0.0051/mmiinn (P n ve was 0.141 and 0.0038 (P ne metastases and normal bone,respectively.

ng>Context:ng> Breast cancer affects more than 2 million women a year worldwide. Improved treatments have made it possible to increase survival rates with more and more patients having time to develop secondary locations. Nasosinus metastases from this cancer are rare. Two recently treated breast cancer patients developed metastases to the sphenoidal and maxillary sinuses. These cases gave rise to an examination of the incidence of this disease, its diagnosis, the therapeutic means envisaged and the fate of these patients. Method: We report the diagnostic and therapeutic data of two patients suffering from breast cancer and presenting metastases at the nasosinus level, with a focus on the interest of radiotherapy in palliative care. Results: The two patients aged 56 and 60 presented in the course of their breast cancer secondary localizations in the sphenoidal and maxillary sinus confirmed by endoscopy and histology. All the cases presented massive lesions associated with other secondary bone locations in particular. After local radiotherapy and systemic chemotherapy treatment, one patient died 5 months after her diagnosis and the other was alive 16 months later. Conclusion: Nasal and sinus metastases from breast cancer are rare and have a poor prognosis as disseminated disease, they do not respond well to conventional systemic therapies even if palliative radiotherapy allows local control.n>

Recently,we have shown that manual stimulation of paralyzed vibrissal muscles after facial-facial anastomosis reduced the poly-innervation of neuromuscular junctions and restored vibrissal *** gene knock outs,we found a differential dependence of manual stimulation effects on growth ***,insulin-like growth factor-1 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor are required to underpin manual stimulation-mediated improvements,whereas FGF-2 is *** lack of dependence on FGF-2 in mediating these peripheral effects prompted us to look centrally,*** the facial nucleus where increased astrogliosis after facial-facial anastomosis follows ＂synaptic stripping＂.We measured the intensity of Cy3-fluorescence after immunostaining for glial fibrillary acidic protein（GFAP） as an indirect indicator of synaptic coverage of axotomized neurons in the facial nucleus of mice lacking FGF-2（FGF-2^（-/-） mice）.There was no difference in GFAP-Cy3-fluorescence（pixel number,gray value range17-103） between intact wildtype mice（2.12± 0.37×10~7） and their intact FGF-2^（-/-） counterparts（2.12±0.27×10~7） nor after facial-facial anastomosis ＋handling（wildtype：4.06±0.32×10~7;FGF-2^（-/-）：4.39±0.17×10~7）.However,after facial-facial anastomosis,GFAP-Cy3-fluorescence remained elevated in FGF-2^（-/-）-animals（4.54±0.12×10~7）,whereas manual otimulation reduced the intensity of GFAP-immunofluorescence in wild type mice to values that were not significantly different from intact mice（2.63±0.39×10）.We conclude that FGF-2 is not required to underpin the beneficial effects of manual stimulation at the neuro-muscular junction,but it is required to minimize astrogliosis in the brainstem and,by implication,restore synaptic coverage of recovering facial motoneurons.

A dosimetric comparative study between conformal and intensity modulated radiation therapy in the treatment of primary nasopharyngeal carcinomas: the Egyptian experience

Objective: The study is a comparative study, the aim of which is to compare 3D conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) in treating nasopharyngeal carcinomas; dosimetrically evaluating and comparing both techniques as regard target coverage and doses to organs at risk (OAR). Methods: Twenty patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were treated by 3D-CRT technique and another 20 patients were treated by IMRT. A dosimetric comparison was done by performing two plans for the same patient using Eclipse planning system (version 8.6). Results: IMRT had a better tumor coverage and conformity index compared to 3D-CRT plans (P value of 0.001 and 0.004), respectively. As for the dose homogeneity it was also better in the IMRT plans and the reason for this was attributed to the dose inhomogeneity at the photon/electron junction in the 3D-CRT plans (P value 0.032). Also, doses received by the risk structures, particularly parotids, was significantly less in the IMRT plans than those of 3D-CRT (P value 0.001). Conclusion: IMRT technique was clearly able to increase the dose delivery to the target volume, improve conformity and homogeneity index and spare the parotid glands in comparison to 3D-CRT technique.
