Enhanced termination of zinc and cadmium ions from wastewater employing plain and chitosan-modified mxenes: synthesis, characterization,and adsorption performance

Zinc and cadmium pollutants cause a significant environmental effect that cannot be ignored. Due to their considerable amount in an aqueous environment, industries are seeking suitable adsorbents that are environmentally friendly and inexpensive for removing metals from wastewater before disposing of them in surface waters. This research employed original MXene(MX) and chitosan-modified MXene(CSMX) to extract zinc(Zn(Ⅱ)) and cadmium(Cd(Ⅱ)) metal ions from water-based solutions. The composite material produced was analyzed using techniques such as X-ray Diffraction(XrD), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIr), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET). The effects of contact duration, p H of the solution, and initial concentration of metal ions on the adsorption process of Zn(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) onto both MX and CSMX composites were investigated. MX and prepared CSMX composite presented a high adsorption capacity for both studied heavy metals, which were 91.55 and 73.82 mg/g for Zn(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) onto MX, 106.84 and 93.07 mg/g for Cd(Ⅱ) and Zn(Ⅱ) onto CSMX composite, respectively. Furthermore, the maximum competitive adsorption capacities for Zn(Ⅱ) onto MX and CSMX composites are 77.29 and 93.47 mg/g, and for are Cd(Ⅱ)60.30 and 79.66 mg/g, respectively. Hence, the removal capacities for both single and competitive metal ions were superior to CSMX composite. However, the adsorption capacities after five successive regeneration sequences were only dropped by 13.2% for Zn(Ⅱ) and 17.4% for Cd(Ⅱ) onto the CSMX composite compared to the first cycle. These results confirm that both metals could be efficiently terminated from wastewater, which makes the prepared CSMX composite a favorable candidate adsorbent in practical applications.

Effects of nitrogen Application and Weed Interference on Performance of Some Tropical Maize Genotypes in nigeria

Low soil nitrogen （n） and weed infestations are some of the major constraints to maize production in nigeria. A split-split plot experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replicates was established at two sites with different agroecological zones, Ikenne （Typic Paleudalf） and Shika （Typic Tropaquept）, in nigeria in 2002 and 2003 rainy seasons to investigate the responses of four maize genotypes （Oba super II, Low n pool C2, TZB-Sr, and ACr 8328 Bn C7） to n fertilizer applied at four rates, 0, 30, 60, and 90 kg n ha^-1, and three weed pressure treatments, no weed pressure （weekly weeding）, low weed pressure （inter-row weekly weeding）, and high weed pressure （no weeding throughout the growing season）. Growth and yield parameters of maize and weeds were taken at flowering and harvest. The results indicated that there was a significant reduction in maize leaf area, leaf area index, and photosynthetically active radiation due to weed interference at both sites. The application of nitrogen at 90 kg n ha^-1 significantly increased maize leaf area. reductions in maize growth and yield at flowering and harvest were significant due to weed interference at both Ikenne and Shika, thus showing that the reductions in maize growth and yield due to weed interference were not ecological zone specific even though weed species and their seed banks may differ. Ameliorative management options could thus be the same in the two agroecological zones. Application of 90 kg n ha^-1 led to a significant increase in maize grain yield at Shika while there was no fertilizer effect at Ikenne on grain yield. There was no significant difference between 60 and 90 kg n ha^-1, suggesting that 60 kg n ha^-1 could be a possible replacement for the higher fertilizer rate at least for the identified maize genotypes. Low weed pressure treatment led to 26% and 35% reductions in maize grain yield at Ikenne and Shika, respectively, while 22% and 51% reductions, respectively, were observed due

AnCAEE: A novel Clustering Algorithm for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor networks

One of the major constraints of wireless sensor networks is limited energy available to sensor nodes because of the small size of the batteries they use as source of power. Clustering is one of the routing techniques that have been using to minimize sensor nodes’ energy consumption during operation. In this paper, A novel Clustering Algorithm for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor networks (AnCAEE) has been proposed. The algorithm achieves good performance in terms of minimizing energy consumption during data transmission and energy consumptions are distributed uniformly among all nodes. AnCAEE uses a new method of clusters formation and election of cluster heads. The algorithm ensures that a node transmits its data to the cluster head with a single hop transmission and cluster heads forward their data to the base station with multi-hop transmissions. Simulation results show that our approach consumes less energy and effectively extends network utilization.

Modification of Grey Water Treatment Using Combination of Cascade Aeration and Biofiltration

A combination of cascade aeration and biofiltration systems is one of the available ecological treatments to reduce the concentration of pollutants in grey water and resolve the problem of acute water crisis supply in Iraq. An experimental constructed grey water treatment system has been installed at AI-Mustansiriya University, College of Engineering during the period from January to December 2012. The performance of the treatment schemes has been evaluated by monitoring the quality of the raw grey water and effluent on these samples which are： pH, COD （chemical oxygen demand）, TSS （total suspended solids）, TDS （total dissolved solids）, PO43 （phosphates）, nO32 （nitrates）, nO （nitrites）, oils ＆ grease, nH3-n （ammonia-nitrogen） and some anions and cations. The average removal rate of COD was more than 60% that of nH3-n, nO3-n, nO2-n, TDS and TSS that were 55%-89%, 59%-74%, 79%-98%, 17%-52% and 51%-87%, respectively. Also the results indicate that the removal efficiency of ions concentrations such as Ca2＋, Mg2＋, na＋, K＋ were 78%-96%, 73%-97%, 14%-47% and 44%-64%, respectively, while for cations such as SO42, Cl and PO43-, the removal efficiencies were 33%-79%, 27%-61% and 81%-99%, respectively. Finally oils ＆ grease was 79%-88%.

Production, Characterisation and Fatty Acid Composition of <i>Jatropha curcas</i>Biodiesel as a Viable Alternative to Conventional Diesel Fuel in nigeria

Ethyl ester biodiesel has been produced from a non-edible Jatropha curcas oil. Oil was extracted from the plant seed using n-hexane at 60°C and pretreated by alkaline refining process to reduce the free fatty acid level to less than 1%. Base-catalysed transesterification reaction with absolute ethanol using potassium hydroxide catalyst was adopted for the conversion. Various physicochemical properties of the refined Jatropha curcas oil were investigated. The ethyl ester biodiesel produced was characterised for its fuel properties such as specific gravity at 15°C, flash point, pour point, kinematic viscosity, cetane number, iodine value and higher heating value using American Society for Testing and Materials Standard Methods. The crude and refined Jatropha curcas oil yields were 58.16% and 52.5%. The physicochemical analysis revealed FFA, saponification value and peroxide value of refined Jatropha curcas oil to be 0.58 mg KOH/g, 159.9 and 1.92 m E/kg respectively. The fatty acid composition obtained from gas chromatography (GC) revealed that the oil contained 44.85% oleic acid as the dominant fatty acid, while Margaric 0.01% and Behenic 0.02% the least. The biodiesel yield was 57.6%, and its measured fuel properties conformed with ASTM 6751 and En 14214 standards.

Using Wearable Sensors for remote Healthcare Monitoring System

recent technological advances in wireless communications and wireless sensor networks have enabled the design of low-cost, intelligent, tiny, and lightweight medical sensor nodes that can be strategically placed on human body, create a wireless body area network (WBAn) to monitor various physiological vital signs for a long period of time and providing real-time feedback to the user and medical staff. WBAns promise to revolutionize health monitoring. In this paper, medical sensors were used to collect physiological data from patients and transmit it to Intelligent Personal digital Assistant (IPDA) using ZigBee/IEEE802.15.4 standard and to medical server using 3G communications. We introduced priority scheduling and data compression into the system to increase transmission rate of physiological critical signals which improve the bandwidth utilization. It also extends the life time of hand-held personal server by reducing power consumption during transmission.

Soil Properties of a Tropical Savannah in the Eastern Ghats of India

As an outcome of globalization and liberalization of economic policies, exploration for and mining of minerals have become one of the recent lucrative trades in India. Due to stringent environment legislations, reclamation and reforestation of the mined out sites have become obligatory. Information on distribution of nutrients before and after mining provides valuable insights while developing and executing the strategy for reclamation and revegetation of the mined out sites. Successful mine reclamation plan chiefly requires information on the soil characteristics in the area during its natural state. With this aim, investigations into spatial and temporal variations in soil nutrients and other physico-chemical parameters among three proposed bauxite mine locations near Araku valley, India were conducted. Soil samples were collected every three months for two years. At each location, samples from three sites in triplicates from four successive layers (0 - 5 cm, 5 - 10 cm, 10 - 15 cm and 15 - 20 cm depth) were collected. Concentrations of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Total nitrogen (Tn), Total Available Phosphorous (TAP), Total Available Sulphur (TAS), C:n, C:P, and C:S decreased along the soil layers, while n:P increased. All the parameters studied varied significantly among months (GLM-AnOVA, P 0.05). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) done on the soil physico-chemical dataset showed first 5 components (Eigen Value > 1) explaining 87.3% of the total variance. Of these, the first component accounted for 21.0% and the second for 20.1% of the total variance. The principal components represented C:n/Soil n, C:P/Soil P/n:P, EC, Soil S/C:S and Soil C axes, respectively.

The Frequency of Survivorship in Heterozygous Diploids of Cdc13-1exo1Δ Mutants of S. cerevisiae Is One Survivor Cell in 72 Cells/Generation at 36°C

Telomeres cap ends of eukaryotic chromosomes prevent them from degradation and ensure genomic stability. Cdc13 is an essential telomere recruitment and maintenance protein. A temperature-sensitive point mutation in cdc13 gene leads to telomere impairment, giving rise to cdc13-1 mutants that suffer lethality at enhanced temperatures. Deleting Exo1 gene from these mutants, however, leads to the emergence of temperature-tolerant mutants called survivors. Yeasts are known to exist as either diploids or haploids. These yeast genotypes generate survivors. The frequency of survivorship in the haploid genotype is one cell in 104 cells/generation at 36°C, however, the frequency at which they emerge in their diploid counterparts at the same temperature is not known. In this study, we investigated the frequency of Survivorship in heterozygous diploids of cdc13-1exo1Δ mutants of S. cerevisiae at 36°C. Diploids were constructed by mating haploid strains of opposite mating type cdc13-1 exo1:LEU strains with strains of cdc13-1 exo1:HIS. The crosses were 1296 × 3181, 2561 × 3182, 1296 × 3182 and 2561 × 3181. Genetic markers and phenotypic appearance were considered while mating the mutant cells. Using a stick, a smear of one haploid strain was made on each YEPD plate labelled C2, C8, C9, D1, D14, and D15. A smear of another opposite mating type was made on the previous strain. They were mixed and allowed to mate overnight, before culturing on media lacking Luecine and Histidine (-L and -H). Survivors were generated by culturing these diploids at 36°C. Using SPSS 20.0 software for windows SPSS, 2011, the frequency was determined as one Survivor cell in 72 cells/generation, as their frequency of survivorship averaged 5.9 × 10-5 ± 0.04.
