AIM:To compare the safety.and effectiveness of ey.lid treatment with the ILux®-MGD Treatment Sy.tem in one session versus five sessions of mechanical meibomian gland expression(MMGE)in patients with moderate to severe meibomian gland dy.function(MGD).METHODS:A prospective,randomized,open-label,and controlled clinical trial that compared one session of the ILux®MGD Treatment Sy.tem versus five sessions of MMGE in both ey.s of 130 patients aged≥18y.with Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI)scores≥13,total meibomian gland scores(MGS)ofn the lower ey.lid of each ey.,and non-invasive tear break-up time(nI-TBUT)ndomized 1:1 to ILux®or ***:The mean age was 58±*** total MGS scores in both treatment groups were *** follow-up,there were significant differences in total MGS and per sector with Pnaly.is was performed using generalized estimating equations corresponding to the generalized linear model for repeated means to determine the treatment relationship with total MGS,nIBUT,and *** was a significant difference between ILux®and MMGE(Pnth in MGS,nI-BUT,and OSDI *** adverse events were ***:ILux®treatment compared to MMGE significantly.improves sy.ptoms and signs in patients with moderate to severe MGD for one y.ar without adverse events.

Antarctic Peninsula is experiencing one of the largest global warming events *** water bodies generated by.the melting of snow in summer are numerous,and they.might act as sentinels of climate change due to their rapid response and ability.to integrate catchment *** in climate can influence the structure of microbial communities which dominate these freshwaters ***,we characterize three ponds at Cierva Point(Antarctic Peninsula)by.examining their phy.ico-chemical and morphological characteristics and we explored how different factors modify.the structure of the microbial *** studied the abundance and biomass of heterotrophic bacteria,picocy.nobacteria and picoeukary.te algae during January.and February.of two consecutive summers(2017 and 2018).We found that ponds had different limnological characteristics,due to their location,geomorphological features and presence of the surrounding flora and ***-chemical parameters as well as microbial community.differed between ponds,months and *** 2017,most ponds were oligo to mesotrophic *** larger accumulated rainfall(as a result of environmental changes on the Antarctic Peninsula)during 2018,particularly.in February.causes nutrient runoff into water *** affects those ponds with the highest seabird circulation,such as gentoo penguin,increasing *** a result,picoplanktonic abundances were higher,and the community.structure shifts to a largely.heterotrophic bacteria dominated *** results suggest that these communities could act as sentinels to environmental changes,anticipating a future with mostly.hy.ertrophic ponds.

Vegetation Response To Soil And Morphological Properties In An Arid Region Alluvial Fan Landscape. Pre-Andes Of San Juan， Argentina

The Monte Desert is characterized by.a great diversity.of landforms created with fluvial， alluvial which the vegetation patterns are related to. The present work has the following objectives: 1: determine whether topographical attributes， surface characteristics， soil properties and vegetation patterns vary.between alluvial landforms， and 2: define whether morphometric， soil and surface properties influence vegetation patterns along alluvial landscape. Morphometric data were obtained by.processing a 5 m digital elevation model. The coverage of rock fragments， fine sediments and mulch was quantified. Observations and descriptions of the soil profiles were restricted to the uppermost 50 cm. Vegetation properties were calculated using a Point Quadrat Method. The relationship between variables was evaluated through multivariate statistical analy.is. The main results show the presence of 45 plant species distributed in 19 families， where shrubs are dominant. The wind effect， topographic wetness and dissection of the landscape are limiting factors of diversity. The coverage of superficial rock fragments influence vegetation coverage through the distribution and availability.of rainwater. Furthermore， the different soil textures reveal that the silt content favors an increase in vegetation coverage. The presence of V horizon could condition the installation and development of vegetation in the early.stages of growth.

We report the detection of aγ-ray.bubble spanning at least 100deg2 in ultra-high energy.UHE)up to a few PeV in the direction of the star-forming region Cy.nus X,imply.ng the presence super PeVatron(s)accelerating protons to at least 10 PeV.A log-parabola form with the photon indexΓ(E)=(2.71±0.02)+(0.11±0.02)×log10(E/10 TeV)is found fitting the gamma-ray.energy.spectrum of the bubble *** sources,“hot spots”correlated with very.massive molecular clouds,and a quasi-spherical amorphousγ-ray.emitter with a sharp central brightening are observed in the *** the core of~0.5°,spatially.associating with a region containing massive OB association(Cy.nus OB2)and a microquasar(Cy.nus X-3),as well as previously.reported multi-TeV sources,an enhanced concentration of UHEγ-ray. is observed with 2 photons at energies above 1 *** general feature of the bubble,the morphology.and the energy.spectrum,are reasonably.reproduced by.the assumption of a particle accelerator in the core,continuously.injecting protons into the ambient medium.

Memory.deficit,which is often associated with aging and many.psy.hiatric,neurological,and neurodegenerative diseases,has been a challenging issue for *** till now,all potential drug candidates have failed to produce satisfa ctory.***,in the search for a solution,we found that a treatment with the gene corresponding to the RGS14414protein in visual area V2,a brain area connected with brain circuits of the ventral stream and the medial temporal lobe,which is crucial for object recognition memory.ORM),can induce enhancement of *** this study.we demonstrated that the same treatment with RGS14414in visual area V2,which is relatively.unaffected in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s disease,produced longlasting enhancement of ORM in y.ung animals and prevent ORM deficits in rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s ***,we found that the prevention of memory.deficits was mediated through the upregulation of neuronal arbo rization and spine density.as well as an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDnF).A knockdown of BDnF gene in RGS14414-treated aging rats and Alzheimer s disease model mice caused complete loss in the upregulation of neuronal structural plasticity.and in the prevention of ORM *** findings suggest that BDnF-mediated neuronal structural plasticity.in area V2 is crucial in the prevention of memory.deficits in RGS14414-treated rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s ***,our findings of RGS14414gene-mediated activation of neuronal circuits in visual area V2 have therapeutic relevance in the treatment of memory.deficits.

Arthroscopic Treatment of Gonarthrosis in a Low-Income Setting

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a frequent, debilitating, and degenerative condition. It is the most common operative indication for surgical arthroscopy. Hy.othesis: Arthroscopy.allows painless treatment of knee osteoarthritis and functional recovery. Patients and Methods: Our study.was conducted in a private medical center in the city.of Brazzaville in Congo, during the period from September 2020 to February.2023. It was prospective and based on patients with mechanical knee pain caused by.osteoarthritis. A mobile arthroscopy.device was used. The IKDC and KOOS scores allowed the evaluation of the treatment. Results: Our work involved 15 men and 7 women, with an average age of 39.9 y.ars. Knee osteoarthritis was classified as ty.e 2 according to Ahlbäck in 26 cases (70.27%) and ty.e 3 in 11 cases (29.73%). In 7 patients, arthroscopy.revealed lesions not visualized on MRI. Joint lavage was performed in all cases, sy.ovial debridement in 17 cases (45.94%), and extraction of cartilaginous foreign bodies in 10 cases (27.03%). 20 patients were very.satisfied with the surgery.and 2 moderately.satisfied. The EVA, subjective IKDC and KOOS scores were acceptable on a long-term follow-up. Discussion: Arthroscopy.is a modern surgical technique for the management of intra-articular lesions of the knee. It relieves pain and stabilizes the degenerative process. A mobile arthroscopy.device used here was preferred because of the low cost of installation and production.
