Yield Evaluation of.a Wheat Line with Com.ined Resistance to Russian Wheat Aphid and Stem.Rust Race “Ug99” in Kenya

InKenya, Russian wheat aphid (RWA) and stem.rust race TTKS (“Ug99”) are the m.st devastating pests of.wheat. Severe inf.stations by RWA result in yield losses of.up to 90% while epidem.cs of.“Ug99”can cause up to 100% loss. The two pests com.ined have seriously af.ected f.rm.r incom.s f.rcing them.to rely heavily on pesticides and increasing the cost of.production. This study sought to evaluate a wheat line that has been developed to be resistant to both RWA and “Ug99”by pyram.ding two m.jor resistance genes. Three varieties were used in this study: “Kwale”, a Kenyan high yielding com.ercial variety but susceptible to both RWA and “Ug99”;“Cook”, an Australian variety carrying stem.rust resistance gene sr36 conf.rring im.unity to “Ug99”;and “KRWA9”, a Kenyan line resistant to RWA but with poor agronom.c attributes. The f. of.the double cross (DC f.) was obtained by crossing the f. of.“Kwale × Cook” and the f. of.“Kwale × KRWA9”. The DC f. population was subjected to sequential screening f.r both RWA and “Ug99”resistance. The surviving DC f. progenies were lef. to self.pollinate in the f.eld to obtain the DC f.. The DC f. progenies were sequentially screened against RWA and “Ug99”to obtain a resistant population to both RWA and “Ug99”. The yield and yield com.onents of.the new resistant line were com.ared with the three parents. Results showed that the DC f.:3 had higher yields than the three parents based on 1000 kernel weight, weight of.kernel per spike, and the actual yield in tons/ha, indicating that the genes were successf.lly introgressed. It is concluded that though races with virulence f.r sr36 have been reported, the gene provides im.unity to race “Ug99”and can be used as a com.onent f.r “Ug99”resistance breeding together with other sr genes.

Tem.oral Periods and Duration of.f.rm.tion of. Cu-m. Porphyry Deposits(Siberia and m.ngolia)

Copper-m.lybdenum.porphyry deposits of.Russia (Sib eria) and m.ngolia were f.rm.d within the interaction zone of.the Siberian conti nent with Paleo-As ian (Pt 2-Pz 2), Paleo-Tethys (Pz 3) and m.ngolo-Okhotsk (Pz 2-m.) ocean s. Ore-beari ng m.gm.tic (porphyry) com.lexes, which are closely associated in tim. and space with Cu-m. m.neralization, are represented by sm.ll stocks (up to 1 km.2) and num.rous dikes of.basic to acid com.osition. Rb-sr and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar dating f.x three tem.oral periods of.activity o f.ore-f.rm.ing process within Siberia and m.ngolia which resulted in a wide appearance of.C u-m. porphyry m.neralization. A series of.large-scale deposits was f.rm.d at t ha t tim.: 1) Early Devonian (m.-porphyry Sora deposit, Kuznetsk-Alatau; Cu-m.- porp hyry Aksug deposit, Tuva), 2) Triassic (Cu-m.-porphyry Erdenetuin-Obo, northe rn m.ngolia), 3) Late Jurassic (Cu-m.-porphyry Zhireken and Shakhtam. deposits, Eastern Transbaikalia). The deposits of.sm.ll size were f.rm.d between these periods (Cu-m.-porphyry Tsagan-Suburga, Cu-porphyry Kharm.gtai deposits in Southern m.ngolia, etc.). C u- m.-porphyry deposits within Siberia and m.ngolia as a whole were f.rm.d with a regular periodicity at 20～30 m. intervals. Large copper-m.lybdenum.porphyry deposits are characterized by the m.nif.stat ion of.m.ltiple ore-f.rm.ng processes which are related to separate pulses of.o r e-bearing m.gm.tism. Three pulses of.ore-bearing m.gm.tism.are established at th e large scale Erdenetuin-Obo deposit: I-250～240 m., II-225～220 m., III-225 ～195 m.a. Every m.gm.tic pulse is accom.anied by ore m.neralization. The Erdenet ore di strict includes three deposits of.dif.erent sizes. Large-scale deposits are in principle m.lti-stage f.rm.tions. They are charac terized by the repeated m.nif.station of.ore-bearing m.gm.tism.and the ore-f.r m. ng processes during the long period of.geological tim. within a relatively lim.t ed space.
