Apnoea,a major sleep disorder,affects many adults and causes several issues,such as fatigue,high blood pressure,liver conditions,increased risk of type II diabetes,and heart ***,advanced monitoring and diagnosing tools of apnoea disorders are needed to facilitate better treatment,with advantages such as accuracy,comfort of use,cost effectiveness,and embedded computation capabilities to recognise,store,process,and transmit time series *** this work we present an adaptation of our apnoea-Pi open-source surface acoustic wave(SAW)platform(Apnoea-Pi)to monitor and recognise apnoea in *** platform is based on a thin-film SAW device using bimorph ZnO and Al structures,including those fabricated as Al foils or plates,to achieve breath tracking based on humidity and temperature *** applied open-source electronics and provided embedded computing characteristics for signal processing,data recognition,storage,and transmission of breath *** show that the thin-film SAW device out-performed standard and off-the-shelf capacitive electronic sensors in terms of their response and accuracy for human breath-tracking *** in combination with embedded electronics makes a suitable platform for human breath monitoring and sleep disorder recognition.

Comparison of ICare and IOPen vs Goldmann applanation tonometry according to international standards 8612 in glaucoma patients

AIM： To compare IOPen and ICare rebound tonometry to Goldmann applanation tonometry（GAT） according to International Standards Organization（ISO） 8612 ***： Totally 191 eyes（n =107 individuals） were included. Criteria of ISO 8612 were fulfilled： 3 clusters of IOP, measured by GAT, were formed. The GAT results were given as mean±standard ***： GAT（19.7±0.5 mm Hg） showed a significant correlation to ICare（19.8±0.5 mm Hg）（r =0.547, P 〈0.001）and IOPen（19.5 ±0.5 mm Hg）（r =0.526, P 〈0.001）.According to ISO 8612 criteria in all 3 IOP groups the number of outliers（of the 95% limits of agreement）exceeded 5% for ICare and IOPen vs GAT： no.1（n =68）29.4% and 22.1%, no.2（n =62） 35.5% and 37.1%, no.3（n =61） 26.2% and 42.6%, ***： The strict requirements of the ISO 8612 are not fulfilled in a glaucoma collective by ICare and IOPen at present. As long as the Goldmann tonometry is applicable it should be used first of all for reproducible IOP readings. ICare and IOPen tonometry should be considered as an alternative tool, if application of Goldmann tonometry is not possible.

ciprofloxacin.cip)is a commonly used antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone group and is widely used in medical and veterinary medicine disciplines to treat bacterial *** cip is discharged into the sewage system,it cannot be removed by a conventional wastewater treatment plant because of its recalcitrant *** this study,boron-doped diamond anode and persulfate were used to degrade cip in an aquatic solution by creating an electrochemically activated persulfate(EAP)*** added to the system as a coactivator and the process was called EAP+*** effects of independent variables,including pH,Fe^(2+),persulfate concentration,and electrolysis time on the systemwere optimized using the response surface *** results showed that the EAP+Fe process removed 94%of cip under the following optimum conditions:A pH of 3,persulfate/Fe^(2+)concentration of 0.4 mmol/L,initial cip concentration 30 mg/L,and electrolysis time of 12.64 *** removal efficiency was increased from 65.10%to 94.35%by adding Fe^(2+)as a transition *** degradation products,7 pathways,and 78 intermediates of cip were studied,and three of those intermediates(m/z 298,498,and 505)were *** toxicological analysis based on toxicity estimation software results indicated that some degradation products of cip were toxic to targeted animals,including fathead minnow,Daphnia magna,Tetrahymena pyriformis,and *** optimumoperation costswere similar in EAP and EAP+Fe processes,approximately 0.54€/m^(3).

Purpose: To investigate the effect of different intraocular lenses (IOLs) on lens epithelial cells (LECs) and on human capsular bags in vitro and to evaluate the transferability of this model to clinical situations. Methods: Sham cataract surgery, including IOL-into-the-bag implantation, was performed on38 donor eyes after removal of the cornea. The capsular bag including the IOL was removed, pinned on a culture dish, covered with medium, and incubated. Two different IOLswere compared per pair of donor eyes. In each pair of donor eyes, the two different IOLs to be compared were implanted individually into capsular bags. The time required for complete coverage of the posterior capsule by a confluent monolayer of LECs was documented. The following IOLs were compared: three-piece acrylic IOLs of different sizes and single-piece polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) versus acrylic IOLs. Results: A complete monolayer of LECs on the posterior capsule was observed to form at times varying from 8 days (PMMA IOLs) to more than 60 days (three-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOLs). A significant difference between PMMA IOLs and hydrophobic acrylic IOLs was found. Conclusions: The human capsular bag model employed allows short-term evaluation of secondary cataract formation for different IOLs. This model’ s correlation with clinical results is good.

Partial Characterization of Bacteriocins from Two <i>Pediococcus acidilactici</i>Strains Isolated during Traditional Sorghum Beer Processing in Côte d’Ivoire

Two lactic acid bacteria strains (At1BEAE22 and At344E21) isolated during tchapalo production were identified on the basis of phenotypic analyses. Bacteriocins produced by these strains were tested for their antimicrobial activities using well diffusion agar method. Heat resistance, pH sensitivity and enzyme treatments were also analyzed. Results showed that both lactic acid bacteria strains were identified as Pediococcus acidilactici. Their bacteriocins inhibited growth of Lactobacillus delbrueckii F/31, Listeria innocua ATCC 33090, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Streptococcus sp, Enterococcus faecalis cip 105042 and Enterococcus faecium ATCC 51558. These bacteriocins were heat stable at 60°C for 30 min for all indicator bacteria. However, they remained active only against Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Listeria innocua at 121°C for 60 min. Moreover, they were active in a wide range of pH (3 to 9) with a maximum activity observed at pH 5 and 6 on all indicator bacteria. But, bacteriocin from Pediococcus acidilactici At34E21 was more stable at acidic pH than basic one. The fact that the bacteriocin was inactivated by proteinase K and α-chymotrypsin indicated its proteinaceous nature, a general characteristics of bacteriocins.

Most of the monitoring data on the occurrence of antibiotics in sewage treatment plants(STPs)have been reported from Europe,north America and some countries in northeast Asia,while very limited data can be found in Southeast Asian *** a pioneering research in Sri Lanka,we collected 24 h composite wastewater samples at the influent and effluent of two mun.cipal STPs for consecutive 7 days to investigate occurrence,consumption and removal efficiency of seventeen *** STP was located in Colombo and Hikkaduwa,respectively,representing two kinds of communities(*** and tourists)in Sri *** targeted antibiotics were extracted by solid-phase extraction method and detected on an Agilent HPLCMSMS(1290/6470QQQ).Results illustrated that the majority of the antibiotics can be always detected from both STPs,except for chlorotetracycine(CTC),doxycycline(DOX)and florfenicol(FF).Fluoroquinolones(FQs)were detected at highest concentrations with ciprofloxacin.cip)being the dominant *** of cip in the influent samples were in the range of 433 e6010 ng/*** consumption of antibiotics was estimated on the basis of influent mass load and catchment population *** found difference in consumption patterns between the two served *** to local people in Colombo,tourists in Hikkaduwa appeared to take more antibiotics during the study period with the estimated daily dose of 0.25 g per 1000 ***,macrolides accounted for a larger portion than FQs in Hikkaduwa,with azithromycin(AZM)being the most prevalent antibacterial *** comparison with an official report by Medical Supplies Division of Sri Lanka,we conjected that AZM was not commonly used among local people and it was mainly introduced by foreign *** for the removal efficiency,the activated sludge system of Colombo exhibited better elimination and more stable performance than the constructed wetland process of Hikkaduwa.
