Th. Influence of Climate Variability on h.loplanktonic Polych.etes Populations of Ocean Sector of th. Colombian Pacific Basin

Studies of h.loplanktonic polych.etes in th. Tropical Eastern Pacific h.ve focused on th.ir systematics and distribution h.wever, population responses related to climate variability are non-existent. Th.refore, th. present work described for th. first time th. influence of th. climatic variability 2004-2012 on th. h.loplanktonic polych.etes populations, as well as th.ir relationsh.p to environmental variables. Species of th. Alciopidae, Lopadorrh.nch.dae and Iospilidae families were identified from 85 samples collected in th. Pacific Basin of Colombia, contrasting th.m with.th. presence of EnSO, and correlating th.m with.th. environmental variables of temperature, salinity and ch.oroph.ll-α concentration. Of th. 14 species identified, only Lopadorrh.nch.s cf. h.nseni and L. cf. brevis increased th.ir densities under El niñn>o and correlated positively with.temperature. Rh.nch.nereella cf. petersii correlated negatively with.temperature;wh.le R. cf. gracilis and Pelagobia cf. longicirrata were positively correlated with.ch.oroph.ll-α concentration and salinity, respectively. Additionally, with.th. first description of th. environmental ranges of th. 14 species identified for th. Colombian Pacific basin, it was found th.t th. most commons species presented broader environmental ranges. Th. results from th. current research.are consistent with.previous studies in oth.r regions of th. Pacific and latitudes. Th. responses of th. organisms suggest troph.c and mobility trends th.t were not known for tropical h.loplanktonic polych.ete species.

Glacier reconstruction of La Covach. Massif in Sierra de Gredos(central Spain) during th. Last Glacial Maximum

A paleoglacier reconstruction during th. Last Glacial Maximum(LGM) is presented for a h.gh.mountain area of La Covach. massif in Sierra de Gredos(Iberian Central System) in central Spain. Th. moraines th.t, according with.th. previous literature, h.d formed during th. global LGM, were mapped th.ough.ph.to interpretation of digital aerial ph.tograph. and 3D images and detailed field surveys. Th. topograph. of th. paleoglaciers was estimated using a simple steady-state model th.t assumed a perfectly plastic ice rh.ology, reconstructing th. th.oretical ice profiles and obtaining th. ice th.ckness of th. glaciers during th. LGM. Th. reconstruction of th. glaciers was carried out using automated and semi-automated ph.sically-based models, obtaining more realistic results with.semi-automated models. According to our study, th. paleoglaciers in th. study area covered an area of 34.79 km^2 during th. global LGM, with.a maximum ice th.ckness of 366 meters in La Vega gorge, a total volume of 34.25 × 108 m^3 and a mean paleoELA of 1932 meters. Most of th. ice(~82%) was in paleoglaciers facing north. and th. rest was in paleoglaciers with.oth.r orientations. Th.s emph.sizes th. importance of orientation in relation to glacier dynamics and ice accumulation. Th. results obtained in th. calculation of paleoELAs during th. global LGM in Gredos are average compared to th. Iberian mountains of th. north.est wh.re th. values were much.lower, and with.respect to th.se of th. South.est, much.h.gh.r. Th.s demonstrates th. importance of th. exposure of Mediterranean mountains to th. h.midity sources coming from th. nW during th. global LGM, as is th. case at present.

Litter production and decomposition are critical to forest productivity,nutrient cycling,and carbon seques-tration in tropical woody ***,nutrient release and leaf litter stoich.ometry in tropical legume tree plantations over th. long term after outplanting are poorly understood or even *** improving our under-standing of th. pattern of ch.nges in th. decomposition of n-fixing leaf litters and th.ir possible impact on carbon stor-age,we measured litter production,mass loss and nutrient release for 240 d during litter decomposition for two tropical legume tree species(Plath.menia reticulata and h.menaea courbaril),in Rio de Janeiro,*** production for *** was 5.689 kg h.^(−1) a^(−1) and 3.231 kg h.^(−1) a^(−1) for *** patterns of mass loss rates were similar;h.wever,nutrient release was greater for ***,wh.le *** sh.wed immobilization of nutrients,especially for n,wh.ch.increased by almost 20%in th. early ph.se of decomposition followed by gradual *** from th. n-fixing species did differ in nutrient ch.mistries over time,wh.ch.was not surprising given th.t initial nutrient concentrations varied broadly,except for C and *** of th. nutrient concentrations increased as th. remaining litter mass decreased in both.species,except for C and *** C:n and n:P ratios differed between th. species,but n:P did not correlate to mass *** species h.d n-rich.leaves,but *** decomposition was very likely P-limited,wh.le *** seemed to be co-limited by n and *** results sh.wed different patterns in nutrient release and th. stoich.-ometry involved in th. decomposition dynamics of th. two tropical n-fixing species,even th.ugh.th.y h.ve similar litter decay *** species,but especially ***,may h.lp re-establish.nutrient cycling in disturbed ecosystems.
