Use of wild trout for PBDE assessment in freshwater environments: Review and summary of critical factors

Certain wild animals represent sentinels to address issues related to environmental pollution,since they can provide integrative data on both pollutant exposure and biological *** their technological benefits,PBDEs are considered a threat to environmental health due to their persistence,toxicity,and capacity to be *** pollutants have been found geographically widespread in fish,particularly in predator species such as *** aim of this work is to critically review the applicability and usefulness of wild trout for assessing PBDEs in freshwater *** reports include data from highly industrialized areas as well as areas from remote regions with relatively low human activity,including European and north American great lakes and freshwater environments in Europe,Greenland,subarctic areas and Patagonia,respectively.A summary of relevant factors were grouped into organism-specific factors(food habits,age,size,lipid content,sex and reproduction,tissue type,mechanism of contaminant uptake and metabolism),and PBDE levels in the surrounding environment(sediment).five wild trout species[rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss),brown trout(Salmo trutta),lake trout(Salvelinus namaycush),arctic char(Salvelinus alpinus),and brook trout(Salvelinus fontinalis)],collected worldwide within the 1994 to present time frame,were *** techniques(principal component analysis-PCA)and mapping approach,showed clear differences in geographic distribution patterns of PBDE levels in trout depending on the region studied:wild trout from European and north American great lakes have the highest PBDE *** pattern could be due to high industrial activity at these locations.A correlational approach used to explore intraspecific relationships between PBDE levels and morphometry,showed positive relationships only for brown ***,brown trout showed the highest trout-to-sediment ratios,which is suggestive of a relatively greater capa

A mathematical model for analyzing and simulating selective hydrogenation of butyne-1 and 1,3-bu-tadiene in industrial trickle bed reactors operated to obtain high purity butene-1 is presented in this *** analysis of typical operating conditions,only the relevant phenomena are finally retained in the model *** model is then employed to analyze the effect of operating variables and catalyst selectivity in *** particular,the search for the minimum hydrogen flow rate necessary to fulfil butene-1 purityspecifications is undertaken.

The quantification of carbon storage in vegetation biomass is a crucial factor in the estimation and mitigation of CO2 ***,arid and semi-arid regions are considered an important carbon ***,they have received limited attention and,therefore,it should be a priority to develop tools to quantify biomass at the local and regional *** plant variables,such as stem diameter and crown area,were reported to be good predictors of individual plant ***-level variables,such as plant cover and mean height,are also easy-to-measure estimators of above-ground biomass(AGB)in dry *** this study,we estimated the AGB in semi-arid woody vegetation in northeast Patagonia,*** evaluated whether the AGB at the stand level can be estimated based on plant cover and to what extent the estimation accuracy can be improved by the inclusion of other field-measured structure *** also evaluated whether remote sensing technologies can be used to reliably estimate and map the regional mean *** this purpose,we analyzed the relationships between field-measured woody vegetation structure variables and AGB as well as LAnDSAT TM-derived *** obtained a model-based ratio estimate of regional mean AGB and its standard *** plant cover allowed us to obtain a reliable estimation of local AGB,and no better fit was attained by the inclusion of other structure *** stand-level plant cover ranged between 18.7%and 95.2%and AGB between about 2.0 and 70.8 Mg/hm^(2).AGB based on total plant cover was well estimated from LAnDSAT TM bands 2 and 3,which facilitated a model-based ratio estimate of the regional mean AGB(approximately 12.0 Mg/hm^(2))and its sampling error(about 30.0%).The mean AGB of woody vegetation can greatly contribute to carbon storage in semi-arid ***,plant cover estimation by remote sensing images could be used to obtain regional estimates and map biomass,as well as to assess and monitor the i

Phenol is an important commodity for the chemical industry, used for many processes and deemed to be a major pollutant due its xenobiotic nature and high toxicity. for the purpose of phenol bioremediation a biotechnological set up consisting of a continuous packed column bioreactor with Candida tropicalis adhered onto activated carbon beads has been previously described. In this work, we show how the integration of available experimental data of such a biotechnological set up into a mathematical model, can lead both to a better comprehension of the underlying physiological mechanisms operating in the cell culture, and to the identification of the system parameters optimum performance. The model so constructed describes the dynamics of phenol uptake and growth rates by the adhered and suspended biomass;the lethality rates;the adhered biomass removal into suspension or adherence onto carbon beads rates and the phenol and biomass (adhered and suspended) concentrations. It also serves to identify different physiological states for the adhered and the suspended biomass;its predictions being verified by comparing with experimental observations. Based on the model description, different optimization strategies are proposed, some of which have been experimentally tested, encompassing changes in bioreactor operation conditions, process development and strain development.

Crystal Structure and Electrical Properties of La0.45Ce0.1Li0.27TiO3Synthesized by Sol-Gel Technique

The lithium ionic conductingLa0.45Ce0.1Li0.27TiO3 has been synthesized by sol-gel method. This solid is the result of substitutional doping with Ce(IV) in La0.45Ce0.1Li0.27TiO3 compound. The aim of the replacement of La(III) by Ce(IV) is increase the number of vacancies in the structure and favors the ionic mobility. Structural characterization shows that the obtained material have the expected tetragonal P4/mmm perovskite structure. Chemical analysis shows that composition was homogeneus in all the sample. The bulk conductivity measured at room temperature is about the same as previously reported for its related lanthanum lithium titanate. However, the lower activation energy for ionic conduction encourages further searching for better conductors in this system.

Process for the Obtention of Coumaric Acid from Coumarin: Analysis of the Reaction Conditions

Coumaric acid can be obtained from basic hydrolysis of coumarin, through a reaction process consisting on opening the lactone ring and cis-trans isomerization. Parameters such as reaction time, temperature, naOH concentration, solvent and reaction atmosphere, have been thoroughly studied and analyzed, in order to determine the appropriate conditions for the maximum conversion efficiency of coumarin into coumaric acid. Experimental results show that the best conditions are a 1 hour reaction time, at 160℃, with a 20% sodium hydroxide aqueous solution, and in an inert reaction atmosphere.

In this paper,a simulation model for the temperature field in the solidification process and microstructure distribution is presented. Then, the result of simulation for the final microstructure distribution is compared with experiment using 10-Kg ingot of Mlni3.55Al0.3Mn0.4CO0.75 (Ml: Lanthanum-rich Mischmetal) hydrogen stor- age alloy cast in a mould, which agrees with the experiment well. finally, in order to obtain the expected as-cast microstructure distribution of 15-Kg ingot of Mlni3.55Al0.3Mn0.4Co0.75 alloy, the size of Cu mould is optimized using the model described. The optimized mould is then made and the alloy is cast in it, the expected as-cast microstructure distribution is obtained.
