Characteristics of fever and response to antipyretic therapy in military personnel with adenovirus-positive community acquired pneumonia

Background:In 2014,an outbreak of adenoviral pneumonia occurred in the Korean military training ***,there are limited data on the characteristics of the fever and its response to antipyretic therapy in immunocompetent adults with adenovirus-positive community-acquired pneumonia(CAP).Methods:The medical records of the patients who were admitted to the Armed Forces Chuncheon Hospital for the treatment of CAP between January 2014 and December 2016 were retrospectively *** patients were divided into three groups,namely,the adenovirus-positive(Adv)group,the adenovirus-negative(Non-Adv)group and the unknown pathogen group,according to the results of a polymerase chain reaction(PCR)test and sputum culture used to measure adenovirus and other bacteria or viruses in respiratory *** evaluated and compared the demographics,clinicolaboratory findings and radiological findings upon admission between the two ***:Out of the 251 military personnel with CAP during the study periods,67 were classified into the Adv group,while 134 were classified into the Non-Adv group and 50 were classified into the unknown pathogen *** patients in the Adv group had a longer duration of fever after admission((3.2±1.6)d vs.(1.9±1.2)d vs.(2.2±1.5)d,P=0.018)and symptom onset((5.8±2.2)d vs.(3.9±2.5)d vs.(3.7±2.0)d,P=0.006)than patients in the Non-Adv and unknown pathogen groups,*** patients in the Adv group had a higher mean temperature at admission(37.8±0.3 vs.37.3±0.3 vs.37.3±0.3,P=0.005),and more patients were observed over 40 and 39 to 40(14.9%vs.2.2%vs.4.0%,35.8%vs.3.7%vs.6.0%,P<0.001)than those in the Non-Adv and unknown pathogen groups,*** Adv group more commonly had no response or exhibited adverse events after antipyretic treatment compared to the Non-Adv group(17.9%vs.1.5%,35.0%vs.4.3%,P<0.001,P=0.05,respectively).In addition,the time from admission to overall clinical stabilization was significantly longer in the patients

A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor consisting of water-filled dielectric tube electrodes was used for the treatment of wastewater. The inner dielectric tube, which acted as the discharging electrode, was filled with an aqueous electrolyte solution. The outer dielectric tube, which served as the other electrode, was in contact with the wastewater, which was grounded. The present reactor system was energy-efficient for the production of ozone, not only because the perfect contact between the aqueous electrode and the dielectric surface minimized the loss of the electrical energy, but also because the DBD reactor was cooled by the wastewater. In addition, the ultraviolet (UV) light produced in the DBD reactor was able to assist in the wastewater treatment since the quartz tube used as the dielectric material was UV-transparent. The performance of the present DBD system was evaluated using a synthetic wastewater formed from distilled water and an azo dye, amaranth. The experimental parameters were the concentration of the electrolyte in the aqueous electrode, the discharge power, the initial pH of the wastewater and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide added to the wastewater. The wastewater treatment system was found to be effective for achieving decomposition of the dye.

Inflammasomes are important sentinels of innate immune defense;they sense pathogens and induce the cell death of infected cells,playing key roles in inflammation,development,and *** inflammasome sensors detect and respond to specific pathogen-and damage-associated molecular patterns(PAMPs and DAMPs,respectively)by forming a multiprotein complex with the adapters ASC and *** disease,cells are exposed to several PAMPs and DAMPs,leading to the concerted activation of multiple ***,the molecular mechanisms that integrate multiple inflammasome sensors to facilitate optimal host defense remain ***,we discovered that simultaneous inflammasome activation by multiple ligands triggered multiple types of programmed inflammatory cell death,and these effects could not be mimicked by treatment with a pure ligand of any single ***,NLRP3,AIM2,NLRC4,and Pyrin were determined to be members of a large multiprotein complex,along with ASC,caspase-1,caspase-8,and RIPK3,and this complex drove ***,this multiprotein complex was released into the extracellular space and retained as multiple *** extracellular inflammasome particles could induce inflammation after their engulfment by neighboring ***,our findings define a previously unknown regulatory connection and molecular interaction between inflammasome sensors,which drives the assembly of a multiprotein complex that includes multiple inflammasome sensors and cell death *** discovery of critical interactions among NLRP3,AIM2,NLRC4,and Pyrin represents a new paradigm in understanding the functions of these molecules in innate immunity and inflammasome biology as well as identifying new therapeutic targets for NLRP3-,AIM2-,NLRC4-and Pyrin-mediated diseases.

The objectives of this study were to analyze the biodiversity of the Traditional Gudeuljang Irrigated Rice Terraces in Cheongsando, South Korea's representative GIAHS(Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System) site, with reference to position and land-use features, and to develop a plan to promote agricultural biodiversity in the region. We confirmed approximately 54,000 m2 of Gudeuljang paddy fields by an on-site survey. Of the Traditional Gudeuljang Irrigated Rice Terraces confirmed by onsite inspection, our survey showed that approximately 24,000 m2 are currently being used as paddy fields, approximately 15,000 m2 are being used as dry fields, and approximately 14,000 m2 are fallow. In terms of other non-agricultural land use, there was grassland, including graveyards; artificial arboreal land, such as orchards, rivers and wetlands, and man-made facilities, such as roads and residences. We also confirmed that the Traditional Gudeuljang Irrigated Rice Terraces had higher plant species diversity than conventional terraced rice paddies, and there was a difference in life form characteristics between the two types. Although the superficial topsoil structure is thesame for the Traditional Gudeuljang Irrigated Rice Terraces(TGIRTs) and conventional terraced rice paddies, it is thought that the differences in the subsurface structure of the TGIRTs contribute greatly to species and habitat diversity. However, the TGIRTs in Cheongsando are facing degeneration, due to damage and reduction in agricultural activity. The main cause is the reduction in the number of farming households due to an aging population in Cheongsando. In order to address this problem, we proposed a management plan, related to fallow paddy fields in South Korea, to initiate voluntary activities in the TGIRTs.

Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage(SCRAP) is an important technique used for coherent quantum controls. In this paper we investigate how the practically-existing dissipation of the system influences on the efficiency of the passage, and thus the fidelities of the SCRAP-based quantum gates. With flux-biased Josephson qubits as a specifical example, our results show clearly that the efficiency of the logic gates implemented by SCRAP are robust against the weak dissipation. The influence due to the non-adiabtic transitions between the adiabatic passages is comparatively significantly small. Therefore, the SCRAP-based logic gates should be feasible for the realistic physical systems with noises.

Pathophysiology and treatment of Barrett's esophagus

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects an estimated 20% of the population in the United States. About 10%-15% of patients with GERD develop Barrett’s esophagus, which can progress to adenocarcinoma, currently the most prevalent type of esophageal cancer. The esophagus is normally lined by squamous mucosa, therefore, it is clear that for adenocarcinoma to develop, there must be a sequence of events that result in transformation of the normal squamous mucosa into columnar epithelium. This sequence begins with gastroesophageal reflux, and with continued injury metaplastic columnar epithelium develops. This article reviews the pathophysiology of Barrett’s esophagus and implications for its treatment. The effect of medical and surgical therapy of Barrett’s esophagus is compared.

Low dynamic range(LDR)images captured by consumer cameras have a limited luminance *** the conventional method for generating high dynamic range(HDR)images involves merging multiple-exposure LDR images of the same scene(assuming a stationary scene),we introduce a learning-based model for single-image HDR *** input LDR image is sequentially segmented into the local region maps based on the cumulative histogram of the input brightness *** the local region maps,SParam-Net estimates the parameters of an inverse tone mapping function to generate a pseudo-HDR *** process the segmented region maps as the input sequences on long short-term ***,a fast super-resolution convolutional neural network is used for HDR image *** proposed method was trained and tested on datasets including HDR-Real,LDR-HDR-pair,and *** experimental results revealed that HDR images can be generated more reliably than using contemporary end-to-end approaches.

A continuous flow streamwise thermal gradientcloud condensation nuclei(CCN)counter with anaerosol focusing and a laser-charge-coupled device(CCD)camera detector system was developed *** countingperformance of the laser-CCD camera detector system wasevaluated by comparing its measured number concentrationswith those measured with a condensation particlecounter(CPC)using polystyrene latex(PSL)and NaClparticles of varying *** CCD camera parameters(***,gain,gamma,and exposure time)wereoptimized to detect moving particles in the sensing volumeand to provide the best image to count *** CCNcounter worked well in the particle number concentrationrange of 0.6-8000#·cm^(-3)and the minimum detectablesize was found to be 0.5μ*** supersaturation in theCCN counter with varying temperature difference wasdetermined by using size-selected sodium chloride particlesbased on Köhler *** developed CCNcounter was applied to investigate CCN activity ofatmospheric ultrafine particles at 0.5%*** showed that CCN activity increased with increasingparticle size and that the higher CCN activation forultrafine particles occurred in the afternoon,suggesting thesignificant existence of hygroscopic or soluble species inphotochemically-produced ultrafine particles.

Potential effects of future adoption of the REDD mechanism as a preventive measure against deforestation and forest degradation in North Korea

This study assesses potential effects of adaption to climate change in the future as a carbon related value using a baseline and credit approach, considering the implementation of the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation （REDD） mechanism. Basic data were obtained for implementing the REDD mechanism in the Democratic People＇s Republic of Korea （DPRK） for scientific decision-making to prevent deforestation and forest degradation. The potential effects according to the implementation of the REDD mechanism in the DPRK based on forest status data （the latest） are as follows. If the deforestation rate is reduced to a level below 6% through a 20-year REDD mechanism beginning in 2011, 0.01-11.64 C-tons of carbon credit per ha could be issued for DPRK. Converted into C02-tons per ha, this amounts to 0.03-42.68 C02-tons, which translates to a minimum of 226,000 CO2-tons and a maximum of 289,082,000 C02-tons overall for forests in DPRK. In terms of carbon price, this measures up to 1.1o million USD- 1.4 billion USD, considering that the REDD carbon price in voluntary carbon markets in 2010 was around 5 USD.
