Wilson's disease in Lebanon and regional countries: Homozygosity and hepatic phenotype predominance

AIM To determine the phenotypes and predominant diseasecausing mutations in Lebanese patients with Wilson's disease,as compared to regional non-European *** The clinical profile of 36 patients diagnosed in Lebanon was studied and their mutations were determined by molecular *** patients underwent full physical exam,including ophthalmologic slit-lamp examination ultrasound imaging of the liver,as well as measurement of serum ceruloplasmin and 24-h urinaryCu *** addition,genetic screening using PCR followed by sequencing to determine disease-causing mutations and polymorphisms in the ATP7B gene was carried on extracted DNA from patients and immediate family *** phenotypic-genotypic findings were then compared to reported mutations in Wilson's disease patients from regional Arab and non-European countries. RESULTS Patients belonged to extended consanguineous *** majority were homozygous for the disease-causing mutation,with no predominant mutation identified. The most common mutation,detected in 4 out of 13families,involved the ATP hinge region and was present in patients from Lebanon,Egypt,Iran and ***,mutations in Lebanese patients and those of the region were scattered over 17 exons of *** the homozygous exon 12 mutation Trp939Cys was only detected in patients from Lebanon but none from the regional countries,the worldwide common mutation H1069Q was not present in the Lebanese and was rare in the *** hepatic phenotype was predominant in patients from both Lebanon and the region(25%-65%).Furthermore,the majority of patients,including those who were asymptomatic,had evidence of some hepatic *** neurologic phenotype was rare. CONCLUSION Findings do not support presence of a founder *** and genetic screening is recommended for family members with index patients and unexplained hepatic dysfunction.

Rainfall data is probably one of the longest-recorded climatic parameters in Lebanon. On the central coast of Lebanon, the Beirut weather station started collecting rainfall data in 1876. However, the recorded data is not available at one data provider source. Published data is found in historical documents but it reaches the early 1970s and then appears a data gap till 1990. Still the data is available, but it might be found to be saved privately. This study investigated the SPI variability on annual time scale between the years 1876 and 2021. The SPI was computed using R-Stat software to compare every year between 1876 and 2021. The majority (about 70% of the years) of the years are near normal in the precipitation rate. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) demonstrated a normal distribution of years. Dry and wet years constitute about 15% of the total 146 years (1876-2021). Extremely dry years might appear in two consecutive years between 50 to 60 years count. After 1991, there were no wet years it was only near normal and few dry years. The last 30 years showed a trend of increasing drought years without any occurrence of wet years. This study demonstrated the importance of keeping records of at least rainfall data and it must be recorded on a daily basis or intensity on time. It is highly important on a managerial basis and for water security reasons to understand the drought event occurrence and investigate the changes in rainfall rates. Climate change scenarios always forecast a decrease in rainfall rates which will not appear without such studies.

With the rapid spread of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)worldwide,the establishment of an accurate and fast process to diagnose the disease is *** routine real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(rRT-PCR)test that is currently used does not provide such high accuracy or speed in the screening *** the good choices for an accurate and fast test to screen COVID-19 are deep learning *** this study,a new convolutional neural network(CNN)framework for COVID-19 detection using computed tomography(CT)images is *** EfficientNet architecture is applied as the backbone structure of the proposed network,in which feature maps with different scales are extracted from the input CT scan *** addition,atrous convolution at different rates is applied to these multi-scale feature maps to generate denser features,which facilitates in obtaining COVID-19 findings in CT scan *** proposed framework is also evaluated in this study using a public CT dataset containing 2482 CT scan images from patients of both classes(i.e.,COVID-19 and non-COVID-19).To augment the dataset using additional training examples,adversarial examples generation is *** proposed system validates its superiority over the state-of-the-art methods with values exceeding 99.10%in terms of several metrics,such as accuracy,precision,recall,and *** proposed system also exhibits good robustness,when it is trained using a small portion of data(20%),with an accuracy of 96.16%.

Contribution of Topographically Explicit Descriptors of Landscape Measures for Application in the Vector Data Environment

Digital terrain models (DTMs) are not commonly used to integrate for landscape spatial analysis. Two dimensional patchcorridormatrix models are prototypes in landscape spatial ecology analysis. Previous studies have motivated ecologists to integrate terrain models in landscape analysis through 1) adjusting areas and distance calculations prior computing landscape indices;2) designing new indices to capture topography and 3) searching the possible relationship between topographic characteristics and vegetation patterns. This study presents new indices called Relative number of Topographic Faces (RTF) and Simplicity of topographic Faces (STF) that can be easily computed in a GIS environment, capturing topographical features of landscapes. Digital terrain model was first prepared and topographic units were extracted and installed in computing the suggested indices. Mountainous and rugged topography in Lebanon was chosen on a forested landscape for the purpose of this study. The indices were useful in monitoring changes of topographic features on patch and landscape level. Both indices are ecologically useful if integrated in landscape pattern analysis, especially in areas of rugged terrains.

Mapping Glitches of Juniper Forests in Lebanon under Natural Conditions and Anthropogenic Activities

In 1965, the first forest map of Lebanon was produced. It is the oldest spatial distribution representation of junipers. Landcover maps of 2002 and 2010 are the most detailed spatial distribution that spatially shows forests. Juniper forests are found in Lebanon as mainly as clear to low density coverage. High-density juniper forests are rarely found and only on Mount-Lebanon. Juniper forests are also mixed with oaks on the Eastern flank of Mount-Lebanon. Mapping juniper forests have demonstrated high degree of complexity, especially because of their low density and being mixed. The spatial representation of juniper forests was compared between the 1965 forest map and the landcover maps of 2002 and 2010. GIS environment was used to extract juniper forests from all maps. The degree of matching between juniper forests was investigated regarding the total area and spatial overlapping. Juniper forests were examined to their spatial locations, comparing the three maps. Spatial changes and anthropogenic effect were obtained, using Google Earth facilities. Google earth had satellite images acquired since 2014. Landcover maps of 2002 and 2010 have spatially matched forest map of 1965 by about 90% and 50% respectively. Spatial coverage of juniper forests were about 12,000, 26,000 and 28,000 ha on the 1965 forest map, landcover maps of 2003 and 2010 respectively. Anti-Lebanon juniper forests were not well represented on both landcover maps. Anthropogenic activities were mainly agriculture that affected juniper forests. Cultivations have replaced about 2% of the spatial coverage of 1965 Juniper forests. Quarries and urban existed inside juniper forests but in very limited areas. Juniper forests delineation did not completely match neither between the available maps, nor to the ground. Review of the Effectiveness of Vehicle Activated Signs

This paper reviews the effectiveness of vehicle activated signs. Vehicle activated signs are being reportedly used in recent years to display dynamic information to road users on an individual basis in order to give a warning or inform about a specific event. Vehicle activated signs are triggered individually by vehicles when a certain criteria is met. An example of such criteria is to trigger a speed limit sign when the driver exceeds a pre-set threshold speed. The preset threshold is usually set to a constant value which is often equal, or relative, to the speed limit on a particular road segment. This review examines in detail the basis for the configuration of the existing sign types in previous studies and explores the relation between the configuration of the sign and their impact on driver behavior and sign efficiency. Most of previous studies show that these signs have significant impact on driver behavior, traffic safety and traffic efficincy. In most cases the signs deployed have yielded reductions in mean speeds, in speed variation and in longer head-ways. However most experiments reported within the area were performed with the signs set to a certain static configuration within applicable conditions. Since some of the aforementioned factors are dynamic in nature, it is felt that the configurations of these signs were thus not carefully considered by previous researchers and there is no clear statement in the previous studies describing the relationship between the trigger value and its consequences under different conditions. Bearing in mind that different designs of vehicle activated signs can give a different impact under certain conditions of road, traffic and weather conditions the current work suggests that variable speed thresholds should be considered instead.

Experimental Study of Double Diffusion in Binary Solution

Application of temperature gradient to a binary solution can work as a separation process like freezing desalination. Initial salinity is an important parameter on the final composition of the water obtained. In this paper, the authors study experimentally the effect of the concentration in aqueous solution on the double diffusion with phase change. NaCI-H20 solution at different salinity is frozen in a rectangular cavity to obtain ice becoming fresh water. Temperature, concentration and rate growth of the interface ice/brine are presented. Three concentrations are tested： 0.02%, 1% and 3.5%.

Sharp Expansion of Intensive Groundwater Irrigation,Semi-Arid Environment at the Northern Bekaa Valley Lebanon

This research focuses on the sharp expansion of groundwater irrigation in the Northern Beqaa, using Landsat satellite images and other auxiliary GIS relevant data sources. Topographic maps were used to assess the location and size of the irrigated area in the early 1960s as the initial years of agriculture expansion analysis. The first available Landsat image of the area was of the year 1972 followed with a series of accessible Landsat images until 2009. In the 1960s, agricultural practices were only limited to areas of surface water resources and open channels next to urban settlements. In the Early 1980s, farmers discovered the agricultural potential of the area. Only 3% of the area was cultivated before the 1970s. The cultivated area reached about the 20% in late 1990s. Weather conditions, shallowness of groundwater tables, low fuel costs and market opportunities have led to an agricultural boom in the area considered as prone to desertification and of low productivity by national authorities. The area is however poorly understood from its hydro geological characteristics and exposed to intensive and unsustainable use of its natural resources.

Experimental Study of Mineral Salts Concentration in Seawater

Mineral salts are of great importance on the regulation of different metabolic activities of living organisms. The well-functioning of the body depends on mineral salts. These salts, existing naturally in small quantity in our diverse diets （grains, legumes, fruit, tea, egg, etc.）, are concentrated in seawater. In this paper, the indirect fi＇eezing is used as a concentration process to recover the most of salt minerals naturally present in seawater. Freezing is known as a purification process, but this paper recovers the brine instead of the formed ice. A 3.5% salinity solution with an appropriate setup is used to recover the maximum of salt in the brine. The work aims to develop a process for freezing salt concentration on cold walls. The influence of operating parameters has highlighted the important role of the cooling ramp and stay time on the salt concentration produced.

Data Based Calibration System for Radar Used by Vehicle Activated Signs

The accurate measurement of a vehicle’s velocity is an essential feature in adaptive vehicle activated sign systems. Since the velocities of the vehicles are acquired from a continuous wave Doppler radar, the data collection becomes challenging. Data accuracy is sensitive to the calibration of the radar on the road. However, clear methodologies for in-field calibration have not been carefully established. The signs are often installed by subjective judgment which results in measurement errors. This paper develops a calibration method based on mining the data collected and matching individual vehicles travelling between two radars. The data was cleaned and prepared in two ways: cleaning and reconstructing. The results showed that the proposed correction factor derived from the cleaned data corresponded well with the experimental factor done on site. In addition, this proposed factor showed superior performance to the one derived from the reconstructed data.
