Determination of the heavy metal content of Entoban herbal medicinal product

The levels of As, Cd, Pb and Hg were investigated in the medicinal herbal syrup Entoban, which is widely used in the management of non-specific diarrhea and acute intestinal infections of various etiologies. The ingredients in Entoban syrup include 6 potent herbal drugs: Aegle marmelose, Berberis aristata, Butea frondosa, Holarrhena antidysenterica, Myrtus communis, and Quercus infectoria. Entoban medicinal plant syrup was analyzed for As, Cd, Pb and Hg by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy(FAAS). Contents of heavy metals in the examined samples were in the range: As(0.074–10.0 ppm); Cd(0.020–0.3 ppm); Pb(0.00–10.0 ppm) and Hg(0.00–1.0 ppm). Results were compared with permissible limit acceptability intake(AHPA). According to determined amounts of heavy metals, the investigated Entoban syrup samples were validated and considered safe for human consumption.

Interleukin-18 polymorphism as an inflammatory index in metabolic syndrome: A preliminary study

AIM To assess circulatory levels of interleukin-18(IL-18) and determine whether the presence of IL-18 promoter polymorphism influences metabolic syndrome phenotypes. METHODS This study recruited one hundred and eighty individuals divided into three groups with sixty subjects each as: Normal weight(18.0-22.9 kg/m^2), overweight(23.0-25.9 kg/m^2) and obese(> 26.0 kg/m^2) according to South Asian criteria of BMI. Fasting blood glucose(FBG), Lipid profile, insulin, IL-18 and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)α were measured using ELISA kits, whereas low density lipoprotein(LDL)-cholesterol, insulin resistance(HOMA-IR) and insulin sensitivity(QUICKI) were calculated. The body fat percentage(BF) was measured through bioelectrical impedance analysis; waist and hip circumference were measured. Genotyping of IL-18-607 C/A polymorphism was performed by using tetraprimer amplification refractory mutation system. Student t test, One-way analysis of variance, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, Pearson's χ~2 test and Pearson's correlation were used, where a P value < 0.05 was considered *** In an aged matched study, obese subjects showed higher levels of FBG, cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL levels as compared to normal weight(P < 0.001).Highest levels of IL-18 and TNF levels were also seen in obese subjects(IL-18: 58.87 ± 8.59 ng/L)(TNF: 4581.93 ± 2132.05 pg/m L). The percentage of IL-18-607 A/A polymorphism was higher in overweight and obese subjects vs normal weight subjects(P < 0.001). Moreover, subjects with AA genotype had a higher BF, insulin resistance, TNFα and IL-18 levels when compared with subjects with AC(heterozygous) or CC(wild type) genotypes. However, we did not find any difference in the lipid profile between three subgroups. CONCLUSION This preliminary data suggests that IL-18 polymorphism affects IL-18 levels that might cause low grade inflammation, further exacerbated by increased TNFα. Like India, Bangladesh and China, Pakistan also has some regions where concentration of Arsenic in water has crossed the WHO safe drinking water limits, 10 ppb. Presence of Arsenic in drinking water is causing serious human health issues for the local residents of Sindh and southern Punjab, which needs serious attention. The present study is focused on the spatial distribution of Arsenic in groundwater and its relationship with the major reported human diseases at settlement level of District Layyah. Data collection is done by taking water samples from hand pumps and health issues reported at the local health care centers adjoining to that sampling pump. The spatial distribution of Arsenic concentration in groundwater is done by using Inversion Distance Weight (IDW) technique. Arsenic Risk Index (ARI) is developed based of WHO health standards, and then used to divide study area into two Arsenic Risk Zones as no risk and high risk with As values less or equal to 10 ng·ml-1 and greater than 10 ng·ml-1, respectively . In the final step these zones were correlated with the diseases at village level. The results show that, Arsenic is high near the Indus River and it decreases in central and eastern parts towards Chenab River. Same trend of Indo-Chenab Arsenic gradient is followed by skin diseases among the people especially, in tehsil Layyah and tehsil Koror. It is concluded that high Arsenic amount in water and skin diseases are highly dependent on the recharge from Indus River.

Post-Operative Complications of Transvesical Prostatic Adenomectomy at Bouake Teaching Hospital: Epidemiological, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Aspects

Introduction: The treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) responds to a medical aspect at first, the effectiveness of which is indisputable. However, the curative treatment is surgery. Trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP) represents the reference surgical technique when the technical platform is correct. In Bouaké, the FREYER HRYNTCHACK trans vesical approach is the technique used in our department. It sometimes leads to complications that can be life-threatening. The general objective of this work was to describe the morbidity and mortality of trans-bladder adenomectomy and their management at the Bouaké University Hospital. Material and Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study carried out at the Bouaké Teaching Hospital over a period of 5 years from January 2016 to December 2022. It involved 150 patients operated on for BPH by the trans vesical route and who experienced postoperative complications. The parameters studied were age, postoperative complications, treatment, and mortality. Results: The mean age of the patients was 67.2 ± 7.37 years. Hemorrhage was the main immediate complication. Parietal suppuration, in 48% of cases, was the most common secondary complication, followed by vesicocutaneous fistula (18%), orchiepididymitis (15.33%) and urinary leakage (3.33). Late complications were: retrograde ejaculation in 73.33%, urethral stricture (10.66%) and sclerosis of the compartment (6.66%). Mortality was 1.33%. Conclusion: Post-operative complications of adenomectomies according to Freyer Hrynstchak remain dominated by infections. However, postoperative hemorrhage remains the surgeon’s fear because it can cause the death of the patient.

Background:Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)linked with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)cause severe illness and life-threatening pneumonia in *** current COVID-19 pandemic demands an effective vaccine to acquire protection against the ***,the present study was aimed to design a multiepitope-based subunit vaccine(MESV)against ***:Structural proteins(Surface glycoprotein,Envelope protein,and Membrane glycoprotein)of SARS-CoV-2 are responsible for its prime *** of proteins were downloaded from GenBank and several immunoinformatics coupled with computational approaches were employed to forecast B-and T-cell epitopes from the SARS-CoV-2 highly antigenic structural proteins to design an effective ***:Predicted epitopes suggested high antigenicity,conserveness,substantial interactions with the human leukocyte antigen(HLA)binding alleles,and collective global population coverage of 88.40%.Taken together,276 amino acids long MESV was designed by connecting 3 cytotoxic T lymphocytes(CTL),6 helper T lymphocyte(HTL)and 4 B-cell epitopes with suitable adjuvant and *** MESV construct was non-allergenic,stable,and highly *** docking showed a stable and high binding affinity of MESV with human pathogenic toll-like receptors-3(TLR3).Furthermore,in silico immune simulation revealed significant immunogenic response of ***,MEV codons were optimized for its in silico cloning into the Escherichia coli K-12 system,to ensure its increased ***:The MESV developed in this study is capable of generating immune response against ***,if designed MESV further investigated experimentally,it would be an effective vaccine candidate against SARS-CoV-2 to control and prevent COVID-19.

A two-dimensional(2D)laminar flow of nanofluids confined within a square cavity having localized heat source at the bottom wall has been *** governing Navier–Stokes and energy equations have been non dimensionalized using the appropriate non dimensional variables and then numerically solved using finite volume *** flow was controlled by a range of parameters such as Rayleigh number,length of heat source and nanoparticle volume *** numerical results are represented in terms of isotherms,streamlines,velocity and temperature distribution as well as the local and average rate of heat transfer.A comparative study has been conducted for two different base fluids,ethylene glycol and water as well as for two different solids Cu and Al_(2)O_(3).It is found that the ethylene glycol-based nanofluid is superior to the water-based nanofluid for heat transfer enhancement.

Fosfomycin—A Promising Oral Antibiotic for the Treatment of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Background: Among the common morbid causes that are prevalent among all age groups, urinary tract infections top the list. In our country, most of the UTI patients visiting hospitals (OPD or IPD) are already on empirical antibiotics even before getting the sensitivity report in their hand. The purpose of this research was to examine the susceptibility patterns of commonly used antibiotics, particularly fosfomycin, against common uropathogens. Methodology: This was a prospective observational study conducted between January and March 2021 in four private tertiary hospitals in Dhaka, Bangladesh. All the urine samples referred to these four laboratories, obtained from patients of all ages and both genders, clinically diagnosed to have UTI, were included. Urine culture was performed by a semiquantitative method on blood agar media and MacConkey agar media. Following identification, antimicrobial sensitivity testing was performed using the modified Kirby Bauer disk diffusion method in accordance with CLSI standards. The data was put into Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) statistical software version 25 for the analysis. Results: A total of 5389 urine samples were received from four private hospitals in Dhaka over three months, and of these, 934 (17.33%) isolates were obtained from culture. About 95% of the isolates were gram-negative bacilli (GNBs). The most common isolate was Escherichia coli 615 (65.85%), followed by Klebsiella spp. 154 (16.49%), Pseudomonas spp. 64 (6.85%) and 51 (5.46%) isolates of Enterobacter. Among the gram-positive cocci, the most common were Enterococci fecalis 18 (1.93%) and Staphylococcus aureus 17 (1.82%). Of all the antibiotics tested, fosfomycin sensitivity was 98.4%, 88.88%, and 100% for Escherichia coli, Enterococci fecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. All the isolates tested were susceptible to Meropenem (77% - 100%), Amoxiclav (78% - 100%) and Nitrofurantoin (45% - 94%). Sensitivity amongst all the uropathogens

Objective: To analyze the wild marigold [(Tagetes minuta L.)(T. minuta)] leaf extract with respect to phytochemicals and allelopathic activity. Methods: The aqueous extracts of T. minuta leaves at concentrations of 50%, 75% and 100% were prepared. Preliminary phytochemical analysis was carried out and then allelopathic ef ect of T. minuta on root length, shoot length, germination, fresh and dry weight of Johnson grass and Sun spurge was tested on i lter paper and in ***: Qualitative phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, l avonoides and terpenoids. The higher concentrations proved to be signii cantly ef ective in reducing almost all the parameters of Sun spurge and Johnson grass in i lter paper bioassay. Supplemented with the soil, all concentrations of leaf extract showed reduction in germination, root and shoot growth, fresh and dry weight of Sun spurge; however, 100% concentration signii cantly reduced the germination of Johnson grass. Conclusions: This study suggests that marigold allelochemicals can be used as an integrated weed management for the production of better crop yield.

Curcumin, a polyphenol, has a wide range of biological properties such as anticancer, antibacterial, antitubercular, cardioprotective and neuroprotective. Moreover, the anti-proliferative activities of Curcumin have been widely studied against several types of cancers due to its ability to target multiple pathways in cancer. Although Curcumin exhibited potent anticancer activity, its clinical use is limited due to its poor water solubility and faster metabolism. Hence, there is an immense interest among researchers to develop potent, water-soluble, and metabolically stable Curcumin analogs for cancer treatment. While drug resistance remains a major problem in cancer therapy that renders current chemotherapy ineffective, curcumin has shown promise to overcome the resistance and re-sensitize cancer to chemotherapeutic drugs in many studies. In the present review, we are summarizing the role of curcumin in controlling the proliferation of drug-resistant cancers and development of curcumin-based therapeutic applications from cell culture studies up to clinical trials.
