Is a Mini-screen for Fetal Alcohol spectrum Disorder Feasible?

Background: Fetal Alcohol spectrum Disorders (FAsDs) are a global public health concern with lifelong consequences for affected individuals. Recent prevalence studies s.g.est FAsD prevalence rates range from 1-5% among school age children. Most people with FAsD are not correctly diagnosed and inadequate screening to identify patients with increased risk may contribute to under-diagnosis. This study developed a 10-item screening tool for FAsD and examined its feasibility. Methods: The sample consisted of 355 children who had been evaluated at an FAsD clinic. Data from the 33-item Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder Behavioral Checklist was used to develop a brief FAsD screen by comparing the changes in Cronbach’s alpha for different combinations of items. The validity of the brief scale was then further examined using receiving operating characteristic analyses. Results: The 10-item screen demonstrated acceptable sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy to identify children at high risk for FAsD. The percentage correctly classified was 91.3 and the area under the receiving operating characteristic curve was 0.971. Conclusions: This feasibility study demonstrated that a screen for FAsD consisting of 10 items with yes or no responses can be completed in 3 - 4 minutes. The tool is brief, with a low administration burden and has acceptable epidemiologic performance characteristics including accuracy. Future research should examine the performance of this tool when used in larger, community-based populations where screening for FAsD would be appropriate.

Purpose: Cortical malformations (CMs) are increasingly recognized as the epileptogenic substrate in patients with medically refractory neocortical epilepsy (NE). The aim of this study was to test the hypotheses that: 1. CMs are metabolically heterogeneous. 2. The structurally normal appearing perilesional zone is characterized by similar metabolic abnormalities as the CM. Methods: Magnetic reson ance spectroscopic imaging (MRsI)in combination with tissue s.g.entation was per formed on eight patients with NE and CMs and 19 age matched controls. In control s, NAA, Cr, Cho,NAA/Cr and NAA/Cho of all voxels of a given lobe were expressed as a function of white matter content and thresholds for pathological values det ermined by calculating the 95%prediction intervals. These thresholds were used to identify metabolically abnormal voxels within the CM and in the perilesional zone. Results: 30%of all voxels in the CMs were abnormal, most frequently becau se of decreases of NAA or increases of Cho. Abnormal voxels tended to form metab olically heterogeneous clusters interspersed in metabolically normal regions. Furthermo re, 15%of all voxels in the perilesional zone were abnormal, the most frequent being decreases of NAA and Cr. Conclusion: In CMs metabolically normal regions a re interspersed with metabolically heterogeneous abnormal regions. Metabolic abn ormalities in the perilesional zone share several characteristics of CMs and mig ht therefore represent areas with microscopic malformations and/or intrinsic epi leptogenicity.

In this paper,we present a time-domain dynamic state estimation for unbalanced three-phase power *** dynamic nature of the estimator stems from an explicit consideration of the electromagnetic dynamics of the network,i.e.,the dynamics of the electrical *** enables our approach to release the assumption of the network being in quasi-steady ***,based on the line dynamics,we derive a graphbased dynamic system *** handle the large number of interacting variables,we propose a port-Hamiltonian modeling *** on the port-Hamiltonian model,we then follow an observer-based approach to develop a dynamic *** estimator uses synchronized sampled value measurements to calculate asymptotic convergent estimates for the unknown bus voltages and *** des.g. and implementation of the estimator are illustrated through the IEEE 33-bus *** simulations verify the estimator to produce asymptotic exact estimates,which are able to detect harmonic distortion and sub-second transients as arising from converterbased resources.

Magnesium as biodegradable biomaterial could serve as bone augmentation material in implant *** knowledge about the predictability of the biodegradation process is essential as this process needs to go hand in hand with the formation of new bone to gradually replace the augmentation ***,this work aimed to assess if the electrochemistry(EC)measurements of the corrosion process correlate with the surface features at various time points during the surface degradation,in order to describe the degradation process of Mg and Mg alloys more reliably,under the assumption that differences in EC behavior can be detected and related to specific patterns on the *** this test setup,a special optical chamber was used for electrochemical measurements on Mg and Mg-alloys(Mg2Ag,Mg4Ag,and Mg6Ag).specimens were investigated using different circulating cell culture solutions as electrolytes,these were minimum essential medium(MEM),Hank’s Balanced salt solution(HBss),and MEM+(MEM with added sodium hydrogen carbonate)at 37℃.Open circuit potential measurements(OCP)over 30 min followed by cyclic polarization were *** electrochemistry data,including OCP,exchange current density and corrosion potential,were compared with visible changes at the surface during these treatments over *** results show that the addition of silver(Ag)leads to a“standardization”of the degradation regardless of the selected test *** is currently difficult to correlate the visible microscopic changes with the data taken from the ***,further investigations are necessary.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAs Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAs *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 geV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.

Nanomaterials capable of confining light are desirable for enhancing spectroscopies such as Raman scattering,infrared absorption,and nonlinear optical *** superlattices have shown the ability to host collective resonances in the mid-infrared,but require stringent fabrication processes to create well-ordered ***,we demonstrate how short-range-ordered Au nanoparticle multilayers on a mirror,self-assembled by a sub-nm molecular spacer,support collective plasmon-polariton resonances in the visible and infrared,continuously tunable beyond 11 pm by simply varying the nanoparticle size and number of *** resulting molecule-plasmon system approaches vibrational strong coupling,and displays.g.ant Fano dip strengths,sEIRA enhancement factors~106,light-matter coupling strengths.g.100 cm-1,Purcell factors~106,and mode volume compression factors~*** collectiive plasmon-polariton mode is highly robust to nanoparticle vacancy disorder and is sustained by the consistent gap size defined by the molecular *** disorder efficiently couples light into the gaps between the multilayers and mirror,enabling Raman and infrared sensing of sub-picolitre sample volumes.

Facing the 2020 pandemic: What does cyberbiosecurity want us to know to safeguard the future?

As the entire world is under the grip of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),and as many are eagerly trying to explain the origins of the virus and cause of the pandemic,it is imperative to place more attention on related potential biosafety *** and biotechnology have changed dramatically during the last ten years or *** reliance on digitization,automation,and their cyber-overlaps have created new vulnerabilities for unintended consequences and potentials for intended exploitation that are mostly *** study summarizes and elaborates on these new cyberbiosecurity challenges,(1)in terms of comprehending the evolving threat landscape and determining new risk potentials,(2)in developing adequate safeguarding measures,their validation and implementation,and(3)specific critical risks and consequences,many of them unique to the *** other's expertise and my previous work,this article reviews and critically interprets our current bio-economy *** goal is not to attribute causative aspects of past biosafety or biosecurity events,but to highlight the fact that the bioeconomy harbors unique features that have to be more critically assessed for their potential to unintentionally cause harm to human health or environment,or to be re-tasked with an intention to cause *** is concluded with recommendations that will need to be considered to help ensure converging and emerging biorisk challenges,in order to minimize vulnerabilities to the life-science enterprise,public health,and national security.
