Genetic and Metabolic Determinants of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) in Tunisian Type 2 diabetes Patients

Background: PAI-1 (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1) is a powerful regulator of fibrinolysis and plasma level is high in type 2 diabetes and cardio-vascular disease, which is determined by genetic polymorphisms in PAI-1 gene and environmental factors. The aim of the study was to examine the determinants of plasma PAI-1 Ag level among type 2 diabetes patients. Methods: 491 Tunisian type 2 diabetes patients had clinical evaluation (weight, high, BMI, Waist Circumference), laboratory investigations including FBG Hb1Ac, cholesterol, triglyceride;HDL-cholesterol was done;plasma PAI-1 antigen level was done with ELISA;−675 4G/5G and −844 G/A polymorphisms of PAI-1 gene was done by PCR-ASA and PCR-RFLP respectively. Results: The mean age for our patients was 58.3 ± 10.5 years;sex-ratio = 0.92;mean PAI-1 level was 34.6 ± 21.3 ng/ml. We didn’t find correlation between PAI-1 level and BMI, but we have found significant correlation between PAI-1 and waist circumference (p = 0.032), most enhanced in men (P = 0.002), T2D patients who have FBG > 11 mmol/l had PAI-1 Ag level higher than those who have FBG P = 0.034), but no difference found between T2D with high Hb1Ac > 8% and those with Hb1Ac diary level and 5G/5G had the lowest level (P −844G/A polymorphism genotypes. Using multiple variable linear regression analysis, the independent factor associated with plasma PAI-1 level was −675 4G/5G polymorphism (regression coefficient β = 4.6, P Conclusion: the present study identifies −675 4G/5G not −844 G/A polymorphism of PAI gene as the principal determinant of plasma PAI-1 level in Tunisian T2D patients, the android fat distribution, dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia play a modest role in this variation.

Influence of Re-Greening on the Infiltrability of Soils in South-Central Niger

In the Sahel, the climate and the agricultural practices are the main factors used to observe regreening process. But the extension of the latter not being uniform in the farming fields, we can suppose that there are other factors that contribute to the re-greening of certain zones and not others. The infiltrability of soils is considered as an important factor for these changes in the last decades. The influence of re-greening on the infiltrability of soils in the southern strip of Niger was studied through a comparison of zones according to the type of sandy soils (Jigawa/Rerey), siltyclay (Guiéza), silty-sandy (Hako) and clay-silty-sandy (Laka). The evaluated parameters are the texture, the infiltrability and the ecological characteristics (specific index of regeneration “SIR” and the Importance Value Index “IVI”). The main conclusions were: the soils of Niger South-Central are characterized by a sandy texture for more than 80%. The soils which are very sandy (“Jigawa”, “Rerey” and “Guieza”) are more permeable and have more trees contrary to the soil Hako and Laka. Their encrusting has the tendency to reduce the vegetation cover on the soil. The infiltration measurements indicated that the rate of initial and stationary infiltration diminishes while going down towards the South. In fact, it has been recorded a rate of 123 mm/min of initial infiltration and 87 mm/min stationary in Dan Saga on the sandy soils against 76 mm/min and 65 mm/min in Daré respectively for the initial and stationary rate. Therefore, the infiltration seems to influence the density, the SIR and the IVI of the trees from the North towards the South. Some additional work is necessary in order to determine the contribution of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) in the improvement of the quality of soils and the movement of water in the superficial zones of the soil.

Peak of Electron Density in F2-Layer Parameters Variability at Quiet Days on Solar Minimum

This study deals with Peak of electron density in F2-layer sensibility scale during quiet time on solar minimum. Peaks of electron density in F2-layer (NmF2) values at the quietest days are compared to those carried out from the two nearest days (previous and following of quietest day). The study uses International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) for ionosphere modeling. The located station is Ouagadougou, in West Africa. Solar minimum of phase 22 is considered in this study. Using three core principles of ionosphere modeling under IRI running conditions, the study enables to carry out Peak of electron density in F2-layer values during the quietest days of the characteristic months for the four different seasons. These parameters are compared to those of the previous and the following of the quietest days (the day before and following each quietest selected day) at the same hour. The knowledge of NmF2 values at the quietest days and at the two nearest days enables to calculate the relative error that can be made on this parameter. This calculation highlights insignificant relative errors. This means that NmF2 values at the two nearest days of each quietest day on solar minimum can be used for simulating the quietest days’ behavior. NmF2 values obtained by running IRI model have good correlation with those carried out by Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics-General Circulation Model (TIEGCM).

Ultra-Violet (UV): A Good Bacterial Sterilizer?

Introduction: The aim of this study was to improve the diSTER-UV and to perform microbiological quality control at the biomedical laboratory of the West African Polytechnic University from January 2022 to November 2022. Methodology: During this eleven-month prospective study, we set up a quality control device (QCD). For microbiological quality control, we performed different cultures of bacteria with different bacteriological and morphological characteristics at T0 (no sterilization) and at T30 (after 30 minutes of sterilization under diSTER-UV). Results: After the realization, the DCQ attached to the diSTER-UV1 allows to display of the UV wavelength present in the light box. This device also displays and alerts when the UV intensity emitted by the lamps is below 250 nm. During microbiological quality control, the cultures carried out at T30 and incubated for 24 hours did not reveal any bacterial colonies. This shows the bactericidal character of diSTER-UV-2. Conclusion: The improvement and the microbiological quality control allowed us to switch from diSTER-UV1 (without sensor) to diSTER-UV-2 (with sensor or DCQ). The biological control allowed us to affirm that the diSTER-UV-2 is bactericidal.

Background: The plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is a puissant antifibrinolytic factor;plasma PAI-1 level is high in type 2 diabetes. 4G/5G polymorphism of PAI-1 gene is a major genetic determinant of plasma PAI-1 levels, with 4G carriers having high PAI-1 level than 5G, theses pose the question about relation T2 patients and those polymorphisms. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the polymorphisms −675 4G/5G and −844 G/A of PAI-1 gene and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A case control study of 491 diabetic and 400 healthy controls. Genotyping of the polymorphism −675 4G/5G was done by PCR-ASA (polymerase chain reaction, allele specific amplification), and the polymorphism −844 G/A was done with PCR-RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism), the allelic frequency is calculated with hardy-Weinberg law, the statistic analysis was done by SPSS version 10. Results: Higher frequencies of The genotypes 4G/4G (p = 0.01) and 4G/5G of polymorphism −675 4G/5G were seen in diabetic (p = 0.05) and higher frequencies of 5G/5G was seen in controls (p −844 G/A was seen in diabetics and G/G was seen in controls (p = 0.01). Conclusion: Our study found association between 4G allele of −675 4G/5G and A allele of −844 G/A of PAI-1 gene and having type 2 diabetes mellitus in Tunisian population.

SAPHO Syndrome: About Three Cases and Review of the Literature

Background: SAPHO syndrome (synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, osteitis) is both a dermatological and a rheumatological entity, with the common denominator of an aseptic inflammatory process, the bone manifestations of which are the essential element of the diagnosis. Despite its chronic and recurrent nature, SAPHO syndrome is very rarely the cause of major disability, even after several decades of evolution. Objective: We want to illustrate through three clinical cases, the importance of the anamnesis, the clinic, the diagnostic criteria in the diagnosis of SAPHO syndrome. Presentation of the cases: We studied the clinical file of three patients consulted in the Rheumatology Department of the CHU Aristide LeDantec in Dakar, Senegal, between January 2012 and December 2020, suffering from SAPHO syndrome of diagnosis established in accordance with the diagnostic criteria of SAPHO syndrome proposed by Khan et al. of 1994. Conclusion: SAPHO syndrome is a rare pathological entity, over a period of 8 years we report 3 cases.

Urban Dynamics and Emergence of new Centers in the Dakar Region (Senegal)

Due to the status of the Dakar region as the former capital of AOF (French West Africa) and current capital of the Republic of Senegal, it is home to a very large part of the population and most of the socio-economic, administrative and cultural activities on a very small area of the country (0.28%). This situation makes it a very attractive region and subject to strong land pressure. The objective of this article is to study past and current urban dynamics as well as changes in natural spaces, in order to identify new urban centers. The methodological approach consists in analyzing satellite images to understand the evolution of different forms of spatial occupation in the Dakar region, and to study population movement flows and urban forms in order to reveal new urban centers. The results of the study show that the Dakar urban space is characterized by diverse forms which express a heterogeneous set of spaces. They also revealed the emergence of new clusters between 1986 and 2016, notably Ngor, Grand Yoff, Parcelles Assainies in the North-West, and Keur Massar and the North of the communes of Rufisque in the eastern part of the Dakar region.

Performance Analysis of a Boost Converter with Components Losses

A theoretical study of a conventional boost converter is presented. Based on the real behavior of the components, two models of the boost converter are introduced: one dealing only with losses through inductor and capacitor and another taking into account switching losses in addition to resistive ones. From these two models, the detailed analytical expressions of both voltage gain factor and conversion efficiency are established taking into account the losses through parasitic resistances and switching losses. The behavior of the converter is then analyzed for each model by simulation for the voltage gain factor and the conversion efficiency.

This paper deals with the security of stock market transactions within financial markets, particularly that of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). The confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data in the stock market being crucial, the implementation of robust systems which guarantee trust between the different actors is essential. We therefore proposed, after analyzing the limits of several security approaches in the literature, an architecture based on blockchain technology making it possible to both identify and reduce the vulnerabilities linked to the design, implementation work or the use of web applications used for transactions. Our proposal makes it possible, thanks to two-factor authentication via the Blockchain, to strengthen the security of investors’ accounts and the automated recording of transactions in the Blockchain while guaranteeing the integrity of stock market operations. It also provides an application vulnerability report. To validate our approach, we compared our results to those of three other security tools, at the level of different metrics. Our approach achieved the best performance in each case.

Profile of SARS-CoV-2 Infected Patients Hospitalized at the Epidemic Treatment Center (ETC) in Saint-Louis, Senegal during the First Two Waves

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 infection is a major public health emergency. Several risk factors are involved in the occurrence of respiratory distress that can lead to death despite resuscitation measures. Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic, and evolution profile of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 hospitalized at the CTE of Saint-Louis (Senegal) during the first two waves. Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study that included all patients hospitalized at the ETC of Saint-Louis (Senegal) with SARS-CoV-2 infection from March 2020 to April 2021. Results: A total of 358 cases were collected, 256 (71.5%) during the first wave and 102 (28.5%) during the second wave. The mean age was 49.5 years (19.5). There was a male predominance (58.4%), with a sex ratio of 1.4. Hypertension was the main comorbidity, with 87 cases (24.3%). The most common functional signs were cough in 194 cases (54.2%), dyspnea in 143 cases (40%) and ageusia in 134 cases (37.4%). Thoracic CT scans were performed on 20 patients (5.6%), with severe involvement (50% - 75%) observed in 50% of cases. Hydroxychloroquine-azithromycin was prescribed to 351 patients (98%). Overall, 338 (94.4%) recovered and 17 (4.7%) died. In multivariate analysis, factors associated with death were male sex [OR = 2.645;95% CI: 1.530 - 4.785;p = 0.011], age 60 years [OR = 1.039;95% CI: 0.564 - 1.914;p = 0.002], the presence of comorbidities [OR = 2.171;95% CI: 0.564 - 3.429;p = 0.033], SpO2 (ambient air) 95% [OR = 2.061;95% CI: 0.616 - 3.827;p = 0.03], acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) [OR = 0.635;95% CI: 0.316 - 1.275;p = 0.001], severe form [OR = 1.664;95% CI: 0.298 - 2.478;p = 0.016], occurrence of complications [OR = 0.521;95% CI: 0.287 - 0.944;p = 0.032], high creatinine levels [OR = 2.061;95% CI: 1.616 - 3.827;p = 0.026], and lymphopenia [OR = 0.485;95% CI: 0.370 - 0.636;p = 0.0
