Identification and preliminary characterization of non-polyene antibiotics secreted by new strain of actinomycete isolated from sebkha of Kenadsa, Algeria

Objective: To study the antimicrobial activity of actinomycetes isolated from sabkha of Kenadsa and identification of the isolate interesting. Methods: Eighteen strains were isolated, using four culture media from sebkha of Kenadsa(Bechar, Southwestern Algeria). Screening of antimicrobial activity consisted of two steps: in primary screening, antibacterial activity was determined by using the agar plug method against test strains; in secondary screening, better isolate which showed a good activity in the first screening was selected to extract antimicrobial substances. The antimicrobial activities of extracts were evaluated by using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Partial characterization of antimicrobial products was performed on the basis of chemical revelations, UV-vis spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. The identification of isolate interesting was performed through morphological, chemical, biochemical and physiological characteristics. Results: All isolates showed antimicrobial activity against at least one microorganism test. One isolate, LAM143 cG 3, was selected for its broad spectrum and high antimicrobial activity. The isolate LAM143 c G3 was identified as Spirillospora sp. The comparison between the species of this genus(Spirillospora rubra and Spirillospora albida) and our isolate indicated the existence of several physiological and biochemical differences which led us to suppose that this was a new member of this genus. Primary characterization of antimicrobial substances produced by the isolate LAM143 c G3 indicated the presence of amines and phenols. The UV–vis spectrum suggested a non-polyenic nature of substances secreted by our isolate, while infrared confirmed the presence of amine ***: The result of the present study revealed that sebkha of Kenadsa was rich in rare actinomycetes, that secreted interesting antimicrobial substance.

Microplastic content was analyzed in road dust, soils alongside roads and stormwater run-offs in Al Ain City, Abu Dhabi. Apart from tire wear material, fibers and degradation products of meso- and macroplastics such as plastic bags and plastic bottle tops were found to be the most dominant plastic microparticles. Speed bumps and artificial turf/lawns were also evaluated as potential sources of microplastics on and alongside roads. It was found that in arid regions Aeolian transport of microplastics may be more important than transport by water.

Intrathoracic latissimus dorsi muscle transposition: a reliable technique for prevention of bronchopleural fistula developing after extrapleural pneumonectomy and external beam radiotherapy in malignant pleural mesothelioma

Objective: Bronchopleural fistula (BPF) is a life threatening complication after pneumonectomy. Extra thoracic skeletal muscle transposition especially latissimus dorsi muscle flap (LDMF) had been used to prevent this complication. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of LDMF in preventing BPF developing after extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) and external radiation therapy in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Methods: Between May 1999 and Dec. 2008, 37 patients with MPM were operated upon by EPP using LDMF prophylactically to reinforce the bronchial stump, and then received external radiation therapy with or without postoperative chemotherapy. Results: The mean age of all patients was 46.7 (range 26-57) years. Twenty five patients were males and 12 patients were females. Twenty three patients had MPM of the right side and 14 patients had MPM of the left side. The peri-operative mortality was 2.7% and only few flap related postoperative morbidity were reported in the form of minor seroma and subcutaneous surgical emphysema. The median follow up was 17 (range 9-43) months. All cases completed their postoperative external radiation therapy with no reported cases of early or late BPF. Conclusion: Intrathoracic pedicled LDMF transposition is proved to be effective in prevention of BPF developing after EPP and external radiation therapy in MPM and it is advised to be a routine step in EPP in these cases and to use more sophisticated technique of postoperative external beam radiotherapy (3D conformal or IMRT) to minimize this complication.

Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Promoter Polymorphism in Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax （PSP） is a common clinical problem occurring in apparently healthy subjects. However emphysema like changes （ELC） in patients with （PSP） has been demonstrated, which is associated with the degradation of extraceilular matrix （ECM）. MMP-9 has been proposed to play a role in the development of emphysema and is involved in the digestion of （ECM）. Among several polymorphic changes reported in MMP-9 regulatory region, the C-1562T polymorphism increases its promoter activity Aim of the work： To test the hypothesis that the MMP-9 C-1562T polymorphism has a role in the occurrence of PSP. Subjects and Methods： MMP-9 （C-1562T） genotypes of 104 PSP patients and 97 healthy subjects （control） were determined by the polymerase chain reaction, followed by a restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Results： This study showed that the genotype frequency for MMP-9 1562 C 〉 T differed significantly between healthy individuals and PSP patients, with higher T allele in MMP-9 promoter in PSP patients, and the C/T ＋ T/T genotypes significantly modified the risk of developing PSP, and were associated with increased risk for PSP. Conclusion： MMP-9-1562C/T genotype may be a potentially indicative factor for susceptibility to PSP, that is, genotypes with the T allele significantly increase the risk of development of PSP.

Prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Algerian patients with hepatitis C virus infection

AIM:To investigate the prevalence of,and risk factors for,diabetes mellitus(DM) in Algerian patients with chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection and in a control ***:A cross-sectional study was undertaken.A total of 416 consecutive patients with viral chronic hepatitis attending the Internal Medicine Department of the University Hospital Center Touhami Benflis in Batna [290 HCV-infected and 126 hepatitis B virus(HBV)-infected patients] were prospectively ***:The prevalence of DM was higher in HCV-infected patients in comparison with HBV-infected patients(39.1% vs 5%,P < 0.0001).Among patients without cirrhosis,diabetes was more prevalent in HCV-infected patients than in HBV-infected patients(33.5% vs 4.3%,P < 0.0001).Among patients with cirrhosis,diabetes was more prevalent in HCV-infected patients,but the difference was not significant(67.4% vs 20%,P = 0.058).The logistic regression analysis showed that HCV infection [odds ratio(OR) 4.73,95% CI:1.7-13.2],metabolic syndrome(OR 12.35,95% CI:6.18-24.67),family history of diabetes(OR 3.2,95% CI:1.67-6.13) and increased hepatic enzymes(OR 2.22,95% CI:1.1-4.5) were independently related to DM in these ***:The high prevalence of diabetes in HCV-infected patients,and its occurrence at early stages of hepatic disease,suggest that screening for glucose abnormalities should be indicated in these patients.

Pancreatitis: Preventing catastrophic haemorrhage

Pancreatitis represents nearly 3% of acute admissions to general surgery in United Kingdom hospitals and has a mortality of around 1%-7% which increases to around 10%-18% in patients with severe pancreatitis. Patients at greatest risk were those identified to have infected pancreatic necrosis and/or organ failure. This review seeks to highlight the potential vascular complications associated with pancreatitis that despite being relatively uncommon are associated with mortality in the region of 34%-52%. We examine the current evidence base to determine the most appropriate method by which to image and treat pseudo-aneurysms that arise as the result of acute and chronic inflammation of pancreas. We identify how early recognition of the presence of a pseudo-aneurysm can facilitate expedited care in an expert centre of a complex pathology that may require angiographic, percutaneous, endoscopic or surgical intervention to prevent catastrophic haemorrhage.

Molecular Layer Deposition of Crosslinked Polymeric Lithicone for Superior Lithium Metal Anodes

In this work,we for the first time developed a novel lithium-containing crosslinked polymeric material,a lithicone that enables excellent protection effects over lithium(Li)metal *** new lithicone was synthesized via an accurately controllable molecular layer deposition(MLD)process,in which lithium tert-butoxide(LTB)and glycerol(GL)were used as *** resultant LiGL lithicone was analyzed using a suite of ***,we found that the LiGL thichicone could serve as an exceptional polymeric protection film over Li metal *** experimental data revealed that the Li electrodes coated by this LiGL lithicone can achieve a superior cycling stability,accounting for an extremely long cyclability of>13,600 Listripping/plating cycles and having no failures so far in Li/Li symmetric cells at a current density of 5 mA/cm^(2)and an areal capacity of 1 mAh/cm^(2).We found that,with a sufficient protection by this LiGL coating,Li electrodes could realize long-term stable cyclability with little formation of Li dendrites and solid electrolyte *** novel LiGL represents a facile and effective solution to the existing issues of Li anodes and potentially paves a technically feasible route for lithium metal batteries.

On the Second Order Optimality Conditions for Optimization Problems with Inequality Constraints

A nonlinear optimization problem (P) with inequality constraints can be converted into a new optimization problem (PE) with equality constraints only. This is a Valentine method for finite dimensional optimization. We review second order optimality conditions for (PE) in connection with those of (P). A strictly complementary slackness condition can be made to get the property that sufficient optimality conditions for (P) imply the same property for (PE). We give some new results (see Theorems 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3) .Without any assumption, a counterexample is given to show that these conditions are not equivalent.

External Bacterial Flora and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns of Staphylococcus spp. and Pseudomonas spp. Isolated from Two Household Cockroaches, Blattella germanica and Blatta orientalis

A study was performed to estimate the prevalence of the external bacterial flora of two domestic cockroaches （Blattella germanica and Blatta orientalis） collected from households in Tebessa （northeast AIgeria）.Three major bacterial groups were cultured （total aerobic, enterobacteria, and staphylococci） from 14 specimens of cockroaches, and antibiotic susceptibility was tested for both Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas isolates. Culturing showed that the total bacterial load of cockroaches from different households were comparable （P〈0.001） and enterobacteria were the predominant colonizers of the insect surface, with a bacterial load of （2.1×10^5 CFU/insect）, whereas the staphylococci group was the minority. Twenty-eight bacterial species were isolated, and susceptibility patterns showed that most of the staphylococci isolates were highly susceptible to chloramphenicol, gentamycin, pristinamycin, ofloxacin, clindamycin, and vancomycin; however, Pseudomonas strains exhibited resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, imipenem, and the second-generation antibiotic cephalosporin cefuroxime.
