The East Asian Very Long Baseline Interferometry(VLBI) Network(EAVN) is a rapidly evolving international VLBI array that is currently promoted under joint efforts among China,Japan and *** aims at forming a joint VLBI Network by combining a large number of radio telescopes distributed over East Asian *** the combination of the Korean VLBI Network(KVN) and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry(VERA) into Ka VA,further expansion with the joint array in East Asia is actively *** we report the first imaging results(at 22 and 43 GHz) of bright radio sources obtained with Ka VA connected to Tianma 65-m and Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescopes in *** test the EAVN imaging performance for different sources,we observed four active galactic nuclei(AGN) having different brightness and *** a result,we confirmed that the Tianma 65-m Radio Telescope(TMRT) significantly enhances the overall array sensitivity,a factor of 4 improvement in baseline sensitivity and 2 in image dynamic range compared to the case of Ka VA *** addition of the Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescope(NSRT) further doubled the east-west angular *** the resulting high-dynamic-range,high-resolution images with EAVN(Ka VA+TMRT+NSRT),various fine-scale structures in our targets,such as the counter-jet in M87,a kink-like morphology of the 3 C 273 jet and the weak emission in other sources are successfully *** demonstrates the powerful capability of EAVN to study AGN jets and to achieve other science goals in *** expansion of EAVN will further enhance the angular resolution,detection sensitivity and frequency coverage of the network.

Unsupervised calibration for noninvasive glucose-monitoring devices using mid-infrared spectroscopy

Noninvasive,glucose-monitoring technologies using infrared spectroscopy that have been studied typically require a calibration process that involves blood collection,which renders the methods somewhat *** develop a truly noninvasive,glucose-monitoring technique using midinfrared spectroscopy that does not require blood collection for calibration by applying domain adaptation(DA)using deep neural networks to train a model that associates blood glucose concentration with mid-infrared spectral data without requiring a training dataset labeled with invasive blood sample *** realizing DA,the distribution of unlabeled spectral data for calibration is considered through adversarial update during training networks for regression to blood glucose *** calibration improved the correlation coeffcient between the true blood glucose concentrations and predicted blood glucose concentrations from 0.38 to *** result indicates that this calibration technique improves prediction accuracy for mid-infrared glucose measurements without any invasively acquired data.

Induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs)are considered to be ideal and promising cell sources for various applications such as regenerative medicine and drug ***,effective mass production systems for the stable supply of desired numbers of iPSCs are yet to be *** review introduces the various approaches that are currently available for stable iPSC *** start by discussing the limiting factors to be controlled during iPSC culture,such as nutrient supply,waste removal,and oxygen *** then introduce recent investigations on iPSC culture systems based on adhesion,suspension,and *** also discuss the downstream processes that follow the culture process,such as filling and freezing processes,which limit the production scale due to decreased cell viability during suspension in cryopreservation ***,we summarize the possibility of the stable mass production of iPSCs and highlight the limitations that remain to be *** suggest that multidisciplinary investigations are essential to understand the different factors that influence cell growth and quality in order to obtain an optimal and stable iPSC mass production system.

Fatty Acid Treatment with Pure Omega-3 Eicosapentaenoic Acid Ethyl Ester for Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases: Differences between Branded (EPADEL®) and Generic Products

Background: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have some protective benefits for patients with coronary artery and cerebrovascular diseases. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) drugs are prescribed as branded (B: EPADEL?) or generic products but no data exist concerning the differences in treatment outcomes between these products. Methods and Results: We investigated the differences in the serum levels of EPA, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA), and the EPA/AA ratios through blood sampling six months after daily administration of 1800 mg of EPADEL? and a generic EPA drug was initiated for 96 patients with cardiovascular diseases. All patients received these PUFA treatments while continuing with baseline therapy. After 6 months of administration, EPADEL? produced better results than the generic (G) product (EPA;baseline: 59.4 ± 25.5 μg, B: 215.5 ± 58.8 μg, G: 199.7 ± 63.8 μg, B vs G, p < 0.0005;AA;base

Accuracy Improvement of Blood Glucose Measurement System Using Quantum Cascade Lasers

For non-invasive measurement of blood glucose levels, a measurement system based on mid-infrared, attenuated-total-reflection spectroscopy equipped with hollow optical fibers, a trapezoidal multi-reflection prism, and two fixed-wavelength quantum cascade lasers emitting different wavelengths is proposed. From the absorption spectra of lip mucosa measured by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, two wavelengths, 1152 cm-1 for absorption by glucose and 1186 cm-1 for the background, were chosen. To reduce measurement errors, the power distribution on the prism surface was investigated, and it was found that some high-intensity spots appear on the prism surface due to the coherency of the laser beam. This inhomogeneous power distribution causes measurement errors for slight movements of the lip mucosa. To homogenize the intensity distribution on the prism, a lens to excite higher modes in the fiber was introduced, and the incident angle was changed to suppress interference due to back-reflected light. These improvements increased the measurement stability, and in-vivo experiments demonstrated that the measured optical absorption correlates well with blood glucose levels.

Deep learning(DL)models currently employed in materials research exhibit certain limitations in delivering meaningful information for interpreting predictions and comprehending the relationships between structure and material *** address these limitations,we propose an interpretable DL architecture that incorporates the attention mechanism to predict material properties and gain insights into their structure–property *** proposed architecture is evaluated using two well-known datasets(the QM9 and the Materials Project datasets),and three in-house-developed computational materials ***–test–split validations confirm that the models derived using the proposed DL architecture exhibit strong predictive capabilities,which are comparable to those of current state-of-the-art ***,comparative validations,based on first-principles calculations,indicate that the degree of attention of the atoms’local structures to the representation of the material structure is critical when interpreting structure–property relationships with respect to physical *** properties encompass molecular orbital energies and the formation energies of *** proposed architecture shows great potential in accelerating material design by predicting material properties and explicitly identifying crucial features within the corresponding structures.

Clinical importance of colonoscopy in patients with gastric neoplasm undergoing endoscopic submucosal dissection

To evaluate the usefulness of total colonoscopy (TCS) for patients undergoing gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and to assess risk factors for colorectal *** the 263 patients who underwent ESD at our department between May 2010 and December 2013, 172 patients undergoing TCS during a one-year period before and after ESD were targeted. After excluding patients with a history of surgery or endoscopic therapy for colorectal neoplasms, 158 patients were analyzed. Of the 868 asymptomatic patients who underwent TCS during the same period because of positive fecal immunochemical test (FIT) results, 158 patients with no history of either surgery or endoscopic therapy for colorectal neoplasms who were matched for age and sex served as the control group for *** revealed adenoma less than 10 mm in 53 patients (33.6%), advanced adenoma in 17 (10.8%), early colorectal cancer in 5 (3.2%), and advanced colorectal cancer in 4 (2.5%). When the presence or absence of adenoma less than 10 mm, advanced adenoma, and colorectal cancer and the number of adenomas were compared between patients undergoing ESD and FIT-positive patients, there were no statistically significant differences in any of the parameters assessed. The patients undergoing ESD appeared to have the same risk of colorectal neoplasms as the FIT-positive patients. Colorectal neoplasms were clearly more common in men than in women (P = 0.031). Advanced adenoma and cancer were significantly more frequent in patients with at least two of the following conditions: hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus (P = 0.019).CONCLUSIONIn patients undergoing gastric ESD, TCS appears to be important for detecting synchronous double neoplasms. Advanced adenoma and cancer were more common in patients with at least two of the following conditions: hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. Caution is therefore especially warranted in patients with these risk factors.
