Modeling and simulation of recurrent phenotypic and genomic selections in plant breeding under the presence of epistasis

Recurrent selection is an important breeding method for population improvement and selecting elite inbreds or fixed lines from the improved ***,a computer simulation tool called QuMARS has been developed,which allows the simulation and optimization of various recurrent selection *** major objective in this study was to use the QuMARS tool to compare phenotypic recurrent,marker-assisted recurrent,and genomic selections(abbreviated respectively as PS,MARS and GS)for both short-and long-termbreeding ***,twomarker selection models were considered,i.e.,stepwise(Rstep)and forward regressions(Forward).For GS,three prediction models were considered,i.e.,genomic best linear unbiased predictors(GBLUP),ridge regression(Ridge),and regression by moore-Penrose general inverse(InverseMP).To generate genotypes and phenotypes for a given individual during simulation,one additive and two epistasis genetic models were considered with three levels of *** demonstrated that selection responses from GBLUP-based GS and MARS(Forward)were consistently greater than those from PS under the additive model,particularly in early selection *** contrast,selection response from PS was consistently superior over MARS and GS under epistatic *** the two epistasis models,total genetic variance and the additive variance component were increased in some cases after *** simulation,we concluded that GS and PS were effective recurrent selection methods for improved breeding of targeted traits controlled by additive and epistatic quantitative trait loci(QTL).QuMARS provides an opportunity for breeders to compare,optimize and integrate new technology into their conventional breeding programs.

After decades of research and development, the WSR-88 D(NEXRAD) network in the United States was upgraded with dual-polarization capability, providing polarimetric radar data(PRD) that have the potential to improve weather observations,quantification, forecasting, and warnings. The weather radar networks in China and other countries are also being upgraded with dual-polarization capability. Now, with radar polarimetry technology having matured, and PRD available both nationally and globally, it is important to understand the current status and future challenges and opportunities. The potential impact of PRD has been limited by their oftentimes subjective and empirical use. More importantly, the community has not begun to regularly derive from PRD the state parameters, such as water mixing ratios and number concentrations, used in numerical weather prediction(NWP) *** this review, we summarize the current status of weather radar polarimetry, discuss the issues and limitations of PRD usage, and explore potential approaches to more efficiently use PRD for quantitative precipitation estimation and forecasting based on statistical retrieval with physical constraints where prior information is used and observation error is included. This approach aligns the observation-based retrievals favored by the radar meteorology community with the model-based analysis of the NWP community. We also examine the challenges and opportunities of polarimetric phased array radar research and development for future weather observation.

Sentinel lymph node mapping for malignant melanoma of the external auditory canal

We describe a novel technique for sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy of a primary cutaneous malignant melanoma in the medial portion of the external auditory canal. The approach is illustrated through a case report and technical description of a procedure performed under general anesthesia on a 19-year-old female patient. Due to the hidden and sensitive location of the primary tumor in the medial external auditory canal, the lymphoscintigraphy injection had to be performed by the surgeon immediately prior to the resection of her c T2 a N0M0 lesion. Final pathology revealed clear margins at the primary site resection and 2 intraparotid sentinel lymph nodes with microscopic foci of metastatic malignant melanoma, which led to further surgical management. A completion left parotidectomy and neck dissection yielded no additional metastatic disease in the fifty-five nodes that were evaluated. Using this technique, sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy accurately predicted the highest risk lymph nodes for the primary lesion of the medial portion of the external auditory canal.

Background:Cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)-diversion procedures have traditionally been the standard of treatment for patients with medically refractive idiopathic intracranial hypertension(IIH).However,dural venous sinus stent(VSS)placement has been described as a safe and effective procedure for the management of medically refractive *** performed a meta-analysis comparing outcomes and complications of CSF-diversion procedures,VSS and optic nerve sheath fenestration(ONSF)for the treatment of medically refractive ***:Electronic searches were performed using six databases from 1988 to January *** was extracted and meta-analysed from the identified ***:From 55 pooled studies,there were 538 CSF-diversion cases,224 dural venous stent placements,and 872 ONSF *** improvements were found in terms of postoperative headaches(CSF *** ***:84%vs.78%vs.62%,P=0.223),papilledema(CSF *** ***:71%vs.86%vs.77%,P=0.192),whilst visual acuity changes favored venous stenting(CSF *** ***:55%vs.69%vs.44%,P=0.037).There was a significantly lower rate of subsequent procedures with venous stent placement(CSF *** ***:37%vs.13%vs.18%,P<0.001),but other complication rates were similar(CSF *** ***:13%vs.8%vs.14%,P=0.28).Subgroup analysis of lumbar-peritoneal *** shunts found no differences in symptom improvements,complications and subsequent procedure ***:Our findings suggest that dural venous sinus stenting may be a viable alternative to traditional surgical interventions in patients who are refractory to medical treatment.

Wallemia sebi (Fr.) Arx was first reported as Sporendonema sebi Fr. in 1832. It is a cosmopolitan xerophilic and osmophilic fungus that usually occurs on sweet food (jams, fruits, sugar, cakes), salted food (salted meats, fish, peanuts), dried materials (dried hay, bread, dried fruits causing spoilage) (Samson et al. 2002, Dally 1980), and plant seeds (sunflower, rye, wheat), as well as in indoor environments (Takahashi 1997), and occurs on several continents. Terracina (1974) found that the septa of W. sebi were similar to those formed by many Basidiomycetes and some Ascomycetes. moore (1986) further ascertained that the septum of W. sebi was dolipore. Although, W. sebi was ascribed to Ascomycetes in the ninth edition of Dictionary of the Fungi (Kirk et al. 2001). Zalar et al. (2005) proposed a new basidiomycetous class, Wallemiomycetes, based on its dolipore morphology, and ITS rDNA (the rDNA internal transcribed spacer regions) data, they included three species: Wallemia sebi, Wallemia ichthyophaga Johan-Olsen and Wallemia muriae (Kickx) Zalar & de Hoog in the genus Wallemia. In this paper we provide the first report of W. sebi collected in China.

Ancient fish weir technology for modern stewardship: lessons from community-based salmon monitoring

Introduction:The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples states that indigenous people have a fundamental right to contribute to the management of the resources that support their *** are vital to the economy and culture of First Nations in coastal British Columbia,*** this region,traditional systems of management including weirs-fences built across rivers to selectively harvest salmon-supported sustainable fisheries for *** the late-19th century traditional fishing practices were banned as colonial goverments consolidated control over ***:In collaboration with the Hei ltsuk First Nation we revived the practice of weir building in the Koeye *** the first four years of the project we tagged 1,226 sockeye,and counted 8,036 fish during fall stream *** used a mark-recapture model which accounted for both pre-spawn mortality due to variation in temperature,and tag loss,to produce the first mark-resight estimates of sockeye abundance in the watershed(4,600-15,000 escapement).Discussion:High river temperatures are associated with increased en route morality in migrating adult *** estimated pre-spawn mortality ranged from 8-72%across the four years of study,highlighting the degree to which climate conditions may dictate future viability in sockeye salmon *** results demonstrate the power of fusing traditional knowledge and management systems with contemporary scientific approaches in developing local monitoring.
