In this study, our objective was to evaluate the antioxidant, cytotoxicity and collagen synthesis activity in vitro and also to test the anti-wrinkle effect of formulated cream containing Veronica officinalis extract in vivo. Antioxidant evaluation was based on the scavenging activity of free radicles (DPPH) and procollagen type 1 protein (P1P) synthesis test was performed in fibroblast cell. Clinical anti-wrinkle activity was performed on female subjects in placebo-controlled trail. Verbascoside (an isolated compound) showed higher (IC50 value of 36.24 ± 1.81 μg/ml) free radicle inhibition activity but weaker collagen synthesis activity. The ethanolic extract showed good inhibition to DPPH free radicals and also showed a significant effect in collagen synthesis activity without cytotoxicity. In the in vivo study, treatment with the formulated cream (Scoti-Speedwell) for 56 days significantly reduced the percentage of wrinkle area and length with 18.0% and 16.05%, respectively. Overall, Veronica officinalis extract containing product (Scoti-SpeedwellTM) can be regarded as a potent anti-wrinkle agent in human skin.

Effects of short-term high CO_2 pretreatment on quality of fresh-cut potatoes were studied. Potatoes were treated under 90% CO_2 for 18 h, peeled, cut, dipped in 1% ascorbic acid or distilled water for 3 min, packed in polyethylene bags and stored for 12 d at 4 ℃. Non-treated potatoes were used as the control. High CO2 pretreatments ensured maintenance of a high level of CO_2 in headspace of packages containing fresh-cut potatoes. Both the growth of total aerobic bacteria in initial stages of post-cut storage and browning index of the cut surface were lower in high CO_2 treated cut potato. Anti-browning effect of high CO_2 pretreatment was decreased when applied in combination with ascorbic acid. Soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity and flesh firmness of fresh-cut potatoes were not affected by high CO_2 treatment. Therefore, high CO_2 treatment before slicing could be effective method to maintain quality of flesh-cut potatoes.

Synergistic immunotherapy of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) and immunogenic cell death (ICD) has shown remarkable therapeutic efficacy in various cancers. However, patients show low response rates and undesirable outcomes to these combination therapies owing to the recycling mechanism of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and the systemic toxicity of ICD-inducing chemotherapeutic drugs. Herein, we propose all-in-one glycol chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) that can deliver anti-PD-L1 peptide (PP) and doxorubicin (DOX) to targeted tumor tissues for a safe and more effective synergistic immunotherapy. The PP-CNPs, which are prepared by conjugating ᴅ-form PP (NYSKPTDRQYHF) to CNPs, form stable nanoparticles that promote multivalent binding with PD-L1 proteins on the targeted tumor cell surface, resulting in effective lysosomal PD-L1 degradation in contrast with anti-PD-L1 antibody, which induces recycling of endocytosed PD-L1. Consequently, PP-CNPs prevent subcellular PD-L1 recycling and eventually destruct immune escape mechanism in CT26 colon tumor-bearing mice. Moreover, the ICD inducer, DOX is loaded into PP-CNPs (DOX-PP-CNPs) for synergistic ICD and ICB therapy, inducing a large number of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in targeted tumor tissues with minimal toxicity in normal tissues. When the DOX-PP-CNPs are intravenously injected into CT26 colon tumor-bearing mice, PP and DOX are efficiently delivered to the tumor tissues via nanoparticle-derived passive and active targeting, which eventually induce both lysosomal PD-L1 degradation and substantial ICD, resulting in a high rate of complete tumor regression (CR: 60%) by a strong antitumor immune response. Collectively, this study demonstrates the superior efficacy of synergistic immunotherapy using all-in-one nanoparticles to deliver PP and DOX to targeted tumor tissues.

AIM:To compare the outcome of the surgical management of left-sided and right-sided diverticular ***:The medical records of 77 patients who were surgically treated for diverticular disease between 1999 and 2010 in a tertiary referral hospital were retrospectively *** study population was limited to cases wherein the surgical specimen was confirmed as diverticulosis by *** diverticula were classified as those arising from the cecum,ascending colon,and transverse colon,and those from the descending colon,sigmoid colon,and rectum were classified as left-sided *** assess the changing trend of occurrence of diverticulosis,data were compared with two previous studies of 51 ***:The proportion of left-sided disease cases was significantly increased compared to the results of our previous studies in 1994 and 2001,(27.5%vs48.1%,P<0.05).Moreover,no differences in gender,body mass index,multiplicity of the diverticula,fever,or leukocytosis were noted between patients with rightsided and left-sided ***,patients with right-sided disease were significantly younger(50.9year vs 64.0 year,P<0.01).Furthermore,left-sided disease was significantly associated with a higher incidence of complicated diverticulitis(89.2%vs 57.5%,P<0.01),combined resection due to extensive inflammation(21.6%vs 5.0%,P<0.05),operative complications(51.4%vs 27.5%,P<0.05),and in-hospital mortality(10.8%vs 0%,P<0.05),along with longer post-operative hospitalization duration(21.3±10.2 d vs 10.6±8.1 d,P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Compared with right-sided diverticular disease,the incidence of left-sided disease in Korea has increased since 2001 and is associated with worse surgical outcomes.

Zinc metal anodes(ZMA)have high theoretical capacities(820 mAh g−1 and 5855 mAh cm−3)and redox potential(−0.76 V *** hydrogen electrode),similar to the electrochemical voltage window of the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)in a mild acidic electrolyte system,facilitating aqueous zinc batteries competitive in next-generation energy storage ***,the HER and byproduct formation effectuated by water-splitting deteriorate the electrochemical performance of ZMA,limiting their *** this study,a key factor in promoting the HER in carbon-based electrode materials(CEMs),which can provide a larger active surface area and guide uniform zinc metal deposition,was investigated using a series of threedimensional structured templating carbon electrodes(3D-TCEs)with different local graphitic orderings,pore structures,and surface *** ultramicropores of CEMs are the determining critical factors in initiating HER and clogging active surfaces by Zn(OH)2 byproduct formation,through a systematic comparative study based on the 3D-TCE series *** the 3D-TCEs had a proper graphitic structure with few ultramicropores,they showed highly stable cycling performances over 2000 cycles with average Coulombic efficiencies of≥99%.These results suggest that a well-designed CEM can lead to high-performance ZMA in aqueous zinc batteries.

A thiocyanate ion selective poly(aniline) solid contact electrode based on manganese complex of N,N’-bis-(4-phenylazosalicylidene)-o-phenylene diamine ionophore was successfully developed. The electrode exhibits a good linear response of 58.1 mV/decade (at 20?C ± 0.2?C, r2 = 0.998) with in the concentration range of 1 × 10–1.0 ~ 1 × 10–5.8 M thiocyanate solution. The composition of this electrode was: ionophore 0.040, polyvinylchloride 0.300, dibutylphthalate 0.660 (mass). This dibutylphthalate plasticizer provides the best response characteristics. The electrode shows good selectivity for thiocyanate ion in comparison with any other anions and is suitable for use with aqueous solutions of pH 4.0 ~ 6.0. The standard deviations of the measured emf difference were ±1.70 and ±2.01 mV for thiocyanate sample solutions of 1.0 × 10–2 M and 1.0 × 10–3 M, respectively. The stabilization time was less than 170 sec. and response time was less than 17 sec.

Evaluation of vitamin D level in patients from neurosurgical intensive care unit

Vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining normal bone metabolism. Recent studies have suggested that vitamin D influences many other physiological processes, including muscle function, cardiovascular homeostasis, nerve function, and immune response. Furthermore, accumulated evidence suggests that vitamin D also mediates the immune system response to infection. Critical neurosurgical patients have higher infection and mortality rates. To correlate vitamin D deficiency to the immunological status of neurosurgical intensive care unit patients, we detected serum vitamin D level in 15 patients with clinically suspected infection and 10 patients with confirmed infection. Serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the primary circulating form of vitamin D, was significantly decreased in patients with suspected or confirmed infection after a 2-week neurosurgical intensive care unit hospitalization, while serum level of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the active form of vitamin D, was significantly decreased in patients after a 4-week neurosurgical intensive care unit hospitalization. These findings suggest that vitamin D deficiency is linked to the immunological status of neurosurgical intensive care unit patients and vitamin D supplementation can improve patient＇s immunological status.

AIM To identify the factors influencing cecal insertion time(CIT) and to evaluate the effect of obesity indices on CIT. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the data for participants who received both colonoscopy and abdominal computed tomography(CT) from February 2008 to May 2008 as part of a comprehensive health screening program. Age, gender, obesity indices [body mass index(BMI), waist-to-hip circumference ratio(WHR), waist circumference(WC), visceral adipose tissue(VAT)volume and subcutaneous adipose tissue(SAT) volume on abdominal CT], history of prior abdominal surgery, constipation, experience of the colonoscopist, quality of bowel preparation, diverticulosis and time required to reach the cecum were analyzed. CIT was categorized as longer than 10 min(prolonged CIT) and shorter than or equal to 10 min, and then the factors that required a CIT longer than 10 min were *** A total of 1678 participants were enrolled. The mean age was 50.42 ± 9.931 years and 60.3% were men. The mean BMI, WHR, WC, VAT volume and SAT volume were 23.92 ± 2.964 kg/m2, 0.90 ± 0.076, 86.95 ± 8.030 cm, 905.29 ± 475.220 cm3 and 1707.72 ± 576.550 cm3, respectively. The number of patients who underwent abdominal surgery was 268(16.0%). Colonoscopy was performed by an attending physician alone in 61.9% of cases and with the involvement of a fellow in 38.1% of cases. The median CIT was 7 min(range 2-56 min, IQR 5-10 min), and mean CIT was 8.58 ± 5.291 min. Being female, BMI, VAT volume and involvement of fellow were significantly associated with a prolonged CIT in univariable analysis. In multivariable analysis, being female(OR = 1.29, P = 0.047), lower BMI(< 23 kg/m2)(OR = 1.62, P = 0.004) or higher BMI(≥ 25 kg/m2)(OR = 1.80, P < 0.001), low VAT volume(< 500 cm3)(OR = 1.50, P = 0.013) and fellow involvement(OR = 1.73, P < 0.001) were significant predictors of prolonged CIT.
