Introduction: Studying the use of psychoactive substances in completed suicide is essential in order to understand its role in the suicide generating stimuli. The most commonly reported substances are alcohol and opioids. Method: This is a retrospective study of completed suicide database of the Forensics Medical office in the city of Mexicali from 1999 to 2005. This is the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California in the US-Mexico border region. Results: Out of 288 suicides, 260 were men, and the most frequent drug found on autopsy was methamphetamine (p < 0.001). The modal victim was a young male (20 - 39 years old), employed in blue-collar jobs, lived in an urban area, found in their homes, and died by hanging. Discussion: Although no causal effect can be drawn, our study results suggest that methamphetamine use may be a risk factor for suicide in this sample.

Background:Type Ⅱ diabetes mellitus(DM2)is a significant risk factor for cancers,including breast ***,a proper diabetic breast cancer mouse model is notwell-established for treatment strategy ***,the precise diabetic signaling pathways that regulate cancer growth remain *** the present study,we established a suitable mouse model and demonstrated the pathogenic role of diabetes on breast cancer ***:We successfully generated a transgenic mouse model of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive(Her2^(+) or ERBB2)breast cancer with DM2 by crossing leptin receptor mutant(Lepr^(db/+))mice with (MMTV-ErbB2/neu)*** administrated with antidiabetic drugs to assess the impacts of controlling DM2 in affecting tumor *** resonance spectroscopic imaging was employed to analyze the tumor ***:Treatment with metformin/rosiglitazone in MMTV-ErbB2/Lepr^(db/db) mousemodel reduced serum insulin levels,prolonged overall survival,decreased cumulative tumor incidence,and inhibited tumor ***-insulin resistance medications also inhibited glycolytic metabolism in tumors in vivo as indicated by the reduced metabolic flux of hyperpolarized ^(13)C pyruvate-to-lactate *** tumor cells from MMTV-ErbB2/Lepr^(db/db) transgenic mice treated with metformin had reprogrammed metabolism by reducing levels of both oxygen consumption and lactate *** decreased the expression of Myc and pyruvate kinase isozyme 2(PKM2),leading to metabolism ***,metformin attenuated the mTOR/AKT signaling pathway and altered adipokine ***:MMTV-ErbB2/Lepr^(db/db) mouse model was able to recapitulate diabetic HER2^(+) human breast ***,our results defined the signaling pathways deregulated in HER2^(+) breast cancer under diabetic condition,which can be intervened by anti-insulin resistance therapy.

The objective of this work was to study the effect of the heat treatment and further operation aging on the stereological parameters(size,quantity and volume fraction)of precipitates within ferrite grains of a creep-resistant 1.25Cr0.5Mo steel after long-term *** heat treatment was similar to the treatment that is carried out in industrial steam pipelines after welding(post weld heat treatment-PWHT)during installation and/or *** operation aging corresponds to a subsequent long in-service operation after *** determine the stereological parameters,SEM digital images were taken from samples of this material after conditions of in-service-aged(after long-term operation),in-service-aged and heat-treated(simulating repairing)and in-service-aged,heat-treated and in-laboratory aged(simulating subsequent long-term operation after repairing).The results indicate that the changes in the stereological parameters of the precipitates within ferrite grains after PWHT is associated with the coarsening process of the within-ferrite-grain precipitates as well as stabilizing the microstructure,since the material aging after PWHT of an in-serviced aged material would not change the stereological parameters.

In the search of lead-free piezoelectric materials,ceramic processing techniques offer potential tools to increase the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties in addition to new chemical *** of pure BNKT16(Bi0.5(Na0.84K0.16)0.5TiO3)phase were synthesized by sol–gel method with a low crystallization temperature(750℃).Ceramic samples were sintered by pressureless sintering(PLS),sinter-forging(SF),and spark plasma sintering(SPS)***,morphological,and chemical characterizations were performed by XRD,Raman,EDS,and *** samples by PLS and SF exhibit rod-like grains associated to bismuth *** highest remanent polarization(11.05μC/cm2),coercive field(26.2 kV/mm),and piezoelectric coefficient(165 pC/N)were obtained for SF *** piezoresponse force microscopy(PFM)analysis shows that the crystallites at the nanoscale exhibit piezoelectric phenomenon and the highest piezoelectric response is reported for PLS *** presence of the rhombohedral phase,the increase in grain and crystallite size,and the oriented rod-like inclusions favoring the crystallographic texture are facts that enhance the piezoelectric coefficient for BNKT16 piezoceramics.

In this paper we used several data mining techniques to analyze the coevolution of hydrogeological and socioeconomical data for the Toluca Valley in Mexico. We found non trivial relations between two historic data bases that make clear that groundwater and economy may be much more linked than it was thought before. In particular, we found that hydrogeological data trends change during economical crisis and election years in Mexico. This shows that different macroeconomical policies implemented by several administrations have a direct impact in the way groundwater is used. We also found that hydrogoelogical data evolve in the direction of population transformation from rural to urban, which could represent a whole paradigm shift in groundwater management with profound repercussions in policy making.

AIM: Celiac disease (CD) is an enteropathic disorder very prevalent in Saharawi people. Our aim was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of six human tissue transglutaminase (tTG) based ELISA tests in Saharawi CD patients. METHODS: Fifty-two CD patients and 23 controls were selected from the Saharawi refugee camps in Tinduf. CD patients were divided into two groups according to their anti-endomysium (EmA) status: 41 EmA positive and 11 EmA negative. Sera from patients and controls were tested for human tTG using six commercial ELISA kits. We used receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves and areas under the curve to compare the diagnostic accuracies of the six assays. RESULTS: In general, there are differences in the sensitivity and specificity of the human tTG ELISA assays used. Diagnostic accuracy of tests was significantly improved by adjusting the cut-off thresholds according to ROC plot analysis; the correction of the cut-off with the employment of the ROC curve analysis modifies the decision limit in more than 50% in five of the six kits evaluated. CONCLUSION: Some of the human tTG ELISAs used in this study have a diagnostic accuracy similar to EmA determination for diagnosis of CD in Saharawi people. However, it is necessary to select the assay with a higher sensitivity and specificity, and recalculate the cut-off threshold using samples from the referral population.

Patel ar instability is a common clinical problem encountered by orthopedic surgeons specializing in the knee. For patients with chronic lateral patellar instability, the standard surgical approach is to stabilize the patella through a medial patellofemoral ligament(MPFL) reconstruction. Foreseeably, an increasing number of revision surgeries of the reconstructed MPFL will be seen in upcoming years. In this paper, the causes of failed MPFL reconstruction are analyzed:(1) incorrect surgical indication or inappropriate surgical technique/patient selection;(2) a technical error; and(3) an incorrect assessment of the concomitant risk factors for instability. An understanding of the anatomy and biomechanics of the MPFL and cautiousness with the imaging techniques while favoring clinical over radiological findings and the use of common sense to determine the adequate surgical technique for each particular case, are critical to minimizing MPFL surgery failure. Additionally, our approach to dealing with failure after primary MPFL reconstruction is also presented.
