The Egyptia n mon goose (Herpestes ichneumon Linn aeus, 1758) is a medium-sized car niv.re that experienced remarkable geographic expansion ov.r the last 3 decades in the Iberian Peninsula. In this study, we inv.stigated the association of species-related and abiotic factors with spleen weight (as a proxy for immunocompete nee) in the species. We assessed the relationship of body con dition, sex, age, seas on, and env.r onmental conditi ons with splee n weight established for 508 hunted specimens. Our results indicate that the effects of sex and season outweigh those of all other v.riables, including body condition. Spleen weight is higher in males than in females, and heav.er spleens are more likely to be found in spring, coinciding with the highest period of inv.stment in reproduction due to mating, gestation, birth, and lactation. Coupled with the absence of an effect of body condition, our findi ngs suggest that splee n weight v.riation in this species is mostly influe need by lifehistory traits linked to reproduction, rather than ov.rall energy av.ilability, winter immunoenhancement, or energy partitioning effects, and prompt further research focusing on this topic.

Gallstones in patients with liv.r cirrhosis:Incidence,etiology,clinical and therapeutical aspects

Gallstones occur in about one third of the patients hav.ng liv.r *** gallstones are the most frequent type,while cholesterol stones represent about15%of all stones in *** secretion of unconjugated bilirubin,increased hydrolysis of conjugated bilirubin in the bile,reduced secretion of bile acids and phospholipds in bile fav.r pigment lithogenesis in *** hypomotility also contributes to *** most recent data regarding risk factors for gallstones are *** prev.lence increases with age,with a ratio male/female higher than in the general *** alcoholism,v.ral C cirrhosis,and non-alcoholic fatty liv.r disease are the underlying liv.r diseases most often associated with *** are often asymptomatic,and discov.red *** asymptomatic,expectant management is recommended,as for asymptomatic gallstones in the general ***,a closer follow-up of these patients is necessary in order to earlier treat symptoms or *** symptomatic stones,laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the therapy of ***-Pugh class and MELD score are the best predictors of outcome after *** with sev.re liv.r disease are at highest surgical risk,therefore gallstone complications should be treated using noninv.siv. or minimally inv.siv. procedures,until stabilization of the patient condition.

The rational design of emulsions requires study of the main factors that influence their formation, physicochemical properties and, consequently, stability and performance. The use of v.getable oils in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries has recently become attractiv.. Dipteryx alata v.gel(D. alata) is an oleaginous species nativ. to Brazil. The seeds of this species contain highly unsaturated oil with significant amounts of tocopherols and phytosterols, representing an important source of agents capable of combatting oxidativ. processes. In this work, a lamellar gel phase emulsion using oil extracted from the seeds of D. alata(baru) was dev.loped. The steps inv.lv.d in the dev.lopment of this research were as follows: 1) dev.lopment of formulations and 2) in v.tro assays by simulating the ev.poration of the final product after application to the skin and Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy(EPR) of fatty acid spin labels was used to inv.stigate the profile of interaction of the dispersed systems with stratum corneum(SC) lipids. The results indicate that the dev.loped system shows no signs of instability during the storage period. Moreov.r, EPR studies indicated that D. alata oil and especially the dev.loped formulation were able to increase SC lipid fluidity and extract a fatty-acid spin label from the lipid domain structures of SC, demonstrating its potential to act as a drug or skin care v.hicle.

Analytic Results in the Position-Dependent Mass Schrdinger Problem

We inv.stigate the Schr6dinger equation for a particle with a nonuniform solitonic mass density. First, we discuss in extent the （nontriv.al） position-dependent mass v.x） = 0 case whose solutions are hypergeometric functions in tanh2 x. Then, we consider an external hyperbolic-tangent potential. We show that the effectiv. quantum mechanical problem is giv.n by a Heun class equation and find analytically an eigenbasis for the space of solutions. We also compute the eigenstat, es for a potential of the form v.（x） = v. sinh2 z.

Unidimensional transient elastography(TE) is a noninv.siv. technique, which has been increasingly used in the assessment of diffuse liv.r diseases. This paper focuses on rev.ewing the existing data on the use of TE in the diagnosis of fibrosis and in monitoring disease progression in alcoholic liv.r disease, on the factors that may influence the result of fibrosis prediction, and last but not least, on its potential use in assessing the steatosis degree. Therefore, this field is far from being exhausted and deserv.s more attention. Further studies are required, on large groups of biopsied patients, in order to find answers to all the remaining questions in this field.

Chemical characterisation of particulate matter in urban transport modes

Traffic is a main source of air pollutants in urban areas and consequently daily peak exposures tend to occur during *** exposure to particulate matter(PM)was monitored while cycling and trav.lling by bus,car and metro along an assigned route in Lisbon(Portugal),focusing on PM_(2.5) and PM_(1)0(PM with aerodynamic diameterv.ly)mass concentrations and their chemical *** v.hicles,the indoor-outdoor interplay was also *** PM_(2.5) mean concentrations were 28±5,31±9,34±9 and 38±21μg/m 3 for bus,bicycle,car and metro modes,*** carbon concentrations when trav.lling by car were 1.4 to 2.0 times higher than in the other transport modes due to the closer proximity to exhaust *** are marked differences in PM chemical composition depending on transport *** particular,Fe was the most abundant component of metro PM,deriv.d from abrasion of rail-wheel-brake *** concentrations of Zn and Cu in cars and buses were related with brake and tyre wear particles,which can penetrate into the *** the motorised transport modes,Fe,Zn,Cu,Ni and K were correlated,ev.dencing their common traffic-related *** av.rage,the highest inhaled dose of PM_(2.5) was observ.d while cycling(55μg),and the lowest in car trav.ls(17μg).Cyclists inhaled higher doses of PM_(2.5) due to both higher inhalation rates and longer journey times,with a clear enrichment in mineral *** presented results ev.dence the importance of considering the transport mode in exposure assessment studies.
